"My Daughter Called the Mafia Boss “Daddy.”" Chapter 5
The Woman Who Sent Her Away
Sofia waited in the clinic garden with a blanket across her knees.
Elena remembered an immaculate gray coat, an expensive handbag, a woman who had known exactly how much fear to put into a sympathetic smile.
The woman in front of her was thinner. Her fair hair had been cut short, and a paper cup of tea shook slightly between her hands.
Elena did not feel the relief she had expected at seeing her diminished.
She felt angry.
Sofia looked first at Lorenzo, then at her.
“Thank you for coming.”
“You asked me to come here once before,” Elena said. “I remember how that ended.”
Sofia lowered the cup.
“I deserve that.”
“I didn’t come to discuss what you deserve. Why were you speaking to my daughter?”
Lorenzo pulled out a chair for Elena. She remained standing.
Sofia glanced at the two guards near the garden entrance.
“They can hear whatever you have to say,” Lorenzo told her.
“I showed Mia your photograph because I wanted her to recognize you.”
Elena gripped the chair back.
“You could have telephoned me.”
“I knew you would hang up.”
“So you went around me and used my child.”
Sofia’s eyes filled.
“I used her, and I had no right to do it.”
The admission gave Elena nowhere easy to put her anger.
“Your neighbor recognized me from years ago,” Sofia continued. “She thought I was a family friend. I had perhaps five minutes while you were inside.”
“And that was enough for you to tell her Lorenzo was her father.”
“I told her he had been looking for her mother.”
“You told a three-year-old.”
Sofia looked down.
Lorenzo spoke quietly.
“Start with my father.”
Sofia folded her hands beneath the blanket.
“Carlo asked me to make Elena leave. He believed you would give up the family if you married her.”
“He knew I was pregnant?” Elena asked.
“I told him after I saw you leave the clinic.”
Lorenzo stepped closer.
Sofia did not retreat, though her shoulders drew inward.
“I thought if she left, you would come back to me,” she said. “Your father thought if she left, you would come back to him. Neither of us asked what you wanted.”
“I told you what I wanted.”
“I know.”
“You knew then.”
“I knew then.”
Elena sat because her legs had begun to ache from holding herself rigid.
“Did Carlo tell you to threaten my baby?”
“He told me to make you understand the danger. I chose the photographs. I chose the words.”
No excuse. No elegant way out.
Elena had spent years wishing Sofia would admit exactly that. Hearing it did not return a single night she had spent afraid.
“Where is Matteo?” Lorenzo asked.
“I don’t know his current address.”
“Then explain why he was with you at my gate.”
“He came because he knew Elena was applying for the job. He wanted to see whether the child looked like you.”

“How did he know where I was?” Elena asked.
“He had been watching the people who were watching you.”
Lorenzo’s expression hardened.
Sofia took a small notebook from her bag.
“This is why.”
He did not take it immediately.
“Before you give me another object instead of an answer, tell me whether my brother is safe.”
“He was safe when I last spoke to him. That was three weeks ago.”
“Why did he let me bury him?”
Sofia closed her eyes.
“He found records in Carlo’s office. Money passing through Argento after everyone believed it had been sold. Some of the payments went to me.”
“Those payments were for making Elena disappear,” Lorenzo said.
Sofia nodded.
“Matteo confronted your father. He wanted to tell you everything. Then someone searched his apartment.”
“Who searched his apartment?”
“He suspected Adrian Vale.”
Lorenzo recognized the name. Elena saw it.
“He was the old accountant,” he said.
“He had been helping Carlo conceal losses. When the books were questioned, Carlo blamed him. Vale kept copies.”
Elena pressed a hand to her forehead.
“So he wanted money.”
“He wanted control,” Sofia said. “Money was the easiest way to get it.”
“Why did Matteo need to die?”
“He thought he could disappear for a few weeks while he found out how much Vale knew. I arranged documents. Someone else handled the boat.”
“Who helped him?” Lorenzo asked.
“He never told me.”
Elena watched Sofia carefully. This answer sounded different from the others: not evasive, but frustrated by a gap she could not fill.
“Did he stop Lorenzo from finding me?”
Sofia nodded.
“He thought that if the search led to you, Vale’s men would follow it. He gave Marco false leads through intermediaries.”
Lorenzo turned toward the garden wall.
Elena knew that posture now. He was trying not to let either of them see what the answer had done to him.
Sofia held out the notebook again.
“It contains the companies Matteo traced. There is also a number in the back. He said he would check it when he could.”
This time, Lorenzo took it.
“What about the letter?” Elena asked.
Sofia looked confused.
“The envelope in your message.”
“Matteo sent me the photograph. He said it was proof Carlo had changed his mind. He never gave me the original.”
“Why tell us now?”
Sofia touched the blanket.
“Because I have spent too much time assuming I could repair things later.”
Elena looked at the clinic building.
For a moment she imagined saying something kind because kindness was expected in a place like this.
Instead, she said, “Your illness does not make what you did smaller.”
“I know.”
“If you want to help, answer when Lorenzo calls. Give him everything. Do not approach my daughter again.”
Sofia nodded, crying silently now.
Elena stood.
Lorenzo waited until she reached the path before he spoke to Sofia one last time.
“You watched me look for her.”
Sofia covered her mouth.
Elena kept walking.
In the car, she sat with her hands locked together. Lorenzo joined her a moment later and shut the door.
Neither spoke until the clinic was behind them.
“I used to imagine meeting her again,” Elena said. “I thought I would feel better after she admitted it.”
“Do you?”
“I feel worse than I expected.”
He reached across the seat.
She let him take her hand.
His thumb rested over the tiny puncture from her sewing needle.
“Neither do I,” he said.
She leaned her head against the seat and closed her eyes.
At a service station, he bought her the terrible coffee she used to drink on long drives. She took one sip and made a face.
“You remembered.”
“I remembered you claiming it was good.”
“I was trying to impress you.”
“You thought service-station coffee would impress me?”
“I was twenty-six. My methods were inconsistent.”
His laugh surprised them both.
Then her phone rang.
Rosa’s name filled the screen.
Elena answered immediately.
“Mia has a temperature,” Rosa said. “The doctor has seen her, and she is comfortable, but she keeps asking when you will be home.”
Lorenzo was already leaning toward the driver.
“Take us home,” he said.
