"All Five of My Roommates Want Me" Chapter 5 — The Video Before Midnight
They watched the video together the following night.
Jamie refused to let anyone position themselves behind him. He sat in the center of the couch with all five men visible: Ethan at the fireplace, Noah on the rug, Mason at the opposite end, Caleb in an armchair, Lucas beside the television controls.
“If I ask you to stop the video, stop it,” Jamie said.
Five voices answered yes.
Lucas pressed play.
The private lounge appeared in grainy color. Music pulsed beneath the recording. Jamie saw himself at 11:42 p.m., laughing, steady on his feet, his eyes clear.
Video-Jamie climbed onto a chair and raised a champagne glass.
“New rule,” he announced. “It’s my birthday, and I’m tired of all five of you acting like I don’t notice.”
Present-day Jamie covered his face.
Noah looked delighted. “You were magnificent.”
“Quiet.”
On-screen, Ethan removed the glass from Jamie’s hand.
“Notice what?” video-Ethan asked.
“The staring. The hovering. The territorial grocery shopping.” Jamie pointed at Mason. “Nobody needs to threaten a man over oat milk.”
Mason sank lower on the couch.
Video-Jamie looked directly toward the private camera Lucas had warned everyone about earlier.
“For the record, I am sober. Caleb made me walk a straight line, count backward, and explain compound interest.”
Caleb folded his arms. “A reasonable screen.”
“You made me explain compound interest on my birthday?” Jamie asked.
“You got it wrong.”
On-screen, Jamie placed his phone on the table with its camera recording too.
“One kiss from each of you,” he said. “I choose where. Anyone can say no. No grabbing unless I ask. No fighting. Nothing after I say the game is over.”
The present room became silent.
Jamie watched himself approach Ethan first.
“Why me?” video-Ethan asked.
“Because you’ll spend all night pretending you don’t want to.”
Jamie looped two fingers through Ethan’s tie and pulled him down.
Ethan stopped an inch away. “Tell me clearly.”
“Kiss me, Ethan.”
The kiss was brief, but it was not timid. Jamie watched his own hand slide to Ethan’s neck. Ethan’s palm settled at Jamie’s back without pulling him closer.
Present-day Ethan stared at the floor.
Next came Noah.
Jamie guided Noah’s hands to his waist, danced against him for half a song, then opened his jacket and pointed above his hip.
“Here.”
Noah dropped to one knee, looked up for confirmation, and pressed one kiss to the exposed skin.
Jamie’s face burned as present-day Noah grinned at him.
“Still think I talk too much?” Noah asked.
“Deeply.”
Mason’s turn was gentler. Jamie stood between Mason’s knees and unfastened the top two buttons of his shirt.
“You feed everyone when you’re afraid to tell them you care,” Jamie said on-screen. “Try honesty.”
Mason whispered something the camera barely caught.
I love you.
Then he kissed Jamie’s collarbone.
Present-day Mason wiped his eyes.
Caleb refused twice.
“You’ve been drinking,” he said in the video.

“One glass in ninety minutes. You tested me.”
“This could complicate our living situation.”
“Caleb, you monitored my pulse for six months before admitting you liked my hands.”
Noah laughed loudly from the rug.
On-screen, Jamie offered his wrist. Caleb kissed the inside where the pulse beat.
The tenderness of it made present-day Jamie’s chest hurt.
Lucas came last.
Video-Jamie approached the shadow beside the window.
“Your rule?” Lucas asked.
Jamie turned his back and swept his hair aside.
“The place nobody else would dare.”
Lucas caught Jamie’s wrist but did not move closer.
“Tell me yes, Jamie. I need to hear it.”
“Yes, Lucas.”
Lucas kissed the back of his neck.
Jamie closed his eyes on-screen.
The video paused automatically when the recovered section ended.
Nobody spoke.
Jamie lowered his hands. He expected shame. Instead, he felt the startling calm of recognizing himself.
“I wanted all of you.”
Ethan looked up. “For one game.”
“You don’t believe it lasted longer?”
“I won’t use a decision you don’t remember to claim something you haven’t chosen today.”
Jamie stood. He crossed to Ethan and stopped close enough to feel the man’s controlled breath.
“You make restraint incredibly irritating.”
Ethan’s gaze dropped to his lips. “It is not easy from this side either.”
Jamie almost closed the distance.
Lucas interrupted. “There’s more.”
The screen resumed at 12:36 a.m.
The game had ended. Everyone appeared relaxed. Jamie was drinking water while Mason divided a piece of cake.
A tall man in a navy tuxedo entered the lounge.
Jamie recognized him immediately.
Adrian Vale was an investor in Aperture magazine. He had offered Jamie a staff photography position that morning.
On-screen, Adrian greeted the group and congratulated Jamie. Ethan visibly disliked him. Lucas watched his hands.
The angle changed as people moved.
Adrian stood beside Jamie’s abandoned water glass.
His hand passed over the rim.
A tiny packet disappeared into his sleeve.
Caleb rose so abruptly that the armchair struck the wall.
“That’s when,” he said.
The footage jumped ahead. Jamie returned, picked up the glass, and drank.
Twenty minutes later, he stumbled.
Noah caught his waist.
Mason took the glass.
Caleb checked Jamie’s eyes.
Ethan lifted Jamie into his arms.
Lucas turned toward Adrian.
But Adrian had disappeared.
The recovered image fractured into static.
One final frame surfaced.
It showed the hotel elevator at 3:09 a.m.
Adrian Vale stood inside, holding a master key.
The elevator doors opened onto the seventeenth floor.
In the next frame, Adrian looked directly at the camera and smiled.
“He knew there was surveillance,” Ethan said.
“He wanted us to find this,” Lucas replied.
Jamie replayed the earlier portion—the one filmed before his speech blurred. He saw himself pull Ethan down for a kiss after asking, “Do you want this?” He saw Ethan answer yes. He saw himself turn to Noah, laughing, and demand honesty before allowing Noah close. Mason’s kiss followed only after Jamie took his hand. Caleb repeatedly asked if Jamie was certain. Lucas tried to leave until Jamie caught his sleeve and said, lucidly, “I’m not choosing tonight. I’m learning what’s true.”

Embarrassment burned through Jamie, but not shame. That man on the screen had been bold, sober enough to articulate boundaries, and unmistakably willing.
Then Adrian returned with a fresh drink.
Within eleven minutes, Jamie’s posture changed.
Lucas paused the footage. “Everything after this point was care. Nothing else.”
“You all stopped.”
“Immediately,” Mason said.
Jamie looked at the five men who had wanted him and had chosen his safety over what they wanted.
“I need the original file preserved,” he said. “Not because I’m ashamed of the kisses. Because it proves the exact moment consent became impossible.”
Ethan’s eyes warmed with fierce approval. “I’ll obtain a forensic copy through the detective.”
Jamie shook his head. “We do it together. No one takes over.”
That was when Lucas found the hidden audio channel beneath the video.
Adrian’s voice whispered through the speakers: “Let’s see which one he blames.”
The trap had never been only about Jamie.
It had been designed to turn all six of them against one another.
Lucas isolated the audio and stored it beside the unedited footage. Ethan drafted a factual timeline without adjectives. Caleb listed Jamie’s symptoms for the detective. Mason photographed the torn packaging from the electrolyte drink they had given him. Noah, for once, made no joke at all.
Jamie watched them turn panic into evidence.
“Why would Adrian risk this?” he asked.
“Because he expected shame to do the destruction for him,” Ethan said.
Jamie looked again at the five consensual kisses preserved on the screen. They complicated his identity, his friendships, and every assumption he had carried into that hotel. But they did not belong to Adrian.
“Then we give him nothing he expects.”
He asked Lucas to make a private copy for him. Not for the police. Not for court. For the day he might want proof that before someone stole his memory, he had spoken clearly and been heard.
Lucas encrypted it under a password only Jamie knew.
