"The Woman They Shouldn’t Have Slapped" Chapter 10
The Seat by the Window
Amina arrived at six twenty-five.
She wore the forest-green suit.
The jacket had been altered slightly at the waist since the previous year. The cream blouse was new. The gold cuff was the same one her parents had given her when she opened Diop Capital.
At reception, a young man checked her identification, found her name, and handed her a badge.
“Thirty-second floor, Ms. Diop.”
“Thank you.”
He returned to the next guest without fuss.
Upstairs, Nora met her outside the elevators. She had been promoted to a coordinator position after a competitive internal process, and now carried three different schedules in a binder.
“Grace is already inside,” she said. “Coffee?”
“Please.”
“Real coffee, or whatever Daniel drinks that smells like punishment?”
Amina laughed.
“Real.”
The boardroom door stood open.
For a moment she saw both versions of the room: the table beneath the blue evening sky, the raised hand, the people who had found somewhere else to look.
Her body remembered before she could tell it there was nothing to prepare for.
She stopped.
Nora stopped, too.
“Would you like a minute?”
“Yes.”
The answer came easily. That was new.
Amina looked out through the corridor window and took a slow breath. Her cheek had healed long ago. The memory had become less frequent, less sharp. It had not disappeared because the company’s numbers improved.
She did not need it to disappear in order to enter.
“All right,” she said.
Inside, Grace was arguing with Priya about a projection. Margaret was reading the agenda. Richard sat with the other shareholders halfway down the table, his glasses perched on his nose.
Daniel moved a cup away from Amina’s papers.
“You made it.”
“I considered sending a representative.”
“I’m glad you didn’t.”
“So am I.”
She took her seat by the window.
The meeting was almost disappointingly ordinary.
Grace described the improved operating position without calling it a miracle. The new directors asked useful questions. One shareholder complained about reduced distributions. Priya explained the cash requirements and did not apologize for arithmetic.
Amina presented Diop Capital’s position. It would remain invested. The next phase would prioritize stable operations and fewer promises the company could not support.
She spoke for seven minutes.
Nobody interrupted to ask who had invited her.
At the end, Richard requested the floor.
He did not tell a story about his father. He did not thank Amina for teaching his family a lesson.
He acknowledged the failures of his leadership, summarized the commitments he had made, and confirmed that the family no longer expected special authority outside its actual rights as shareholders.
It was brief enough to sound prepared and uncomfortable enough to sound true.
Afterward, he approached her while the others gathered their things.
“Thank you for keeping the business together.”
“Grace did much of that.”
“I thanked her, too.”
Amina nodded.

Richard looked at the place where his daughter had stood a year earlier. Then he looked away.
“Vivian is downstairs. The foundation has a separate reception. She won’t come up.”
“All right.”
“She has an ordinary job now. At an events company. Not ours.”
Amina closed her folder.
“I hope she does it well.”
“So do I.”
That was the end of the conversation. Amina was grateful he let it be.
In the lobby, the foundation reception had begun. Scholarship recipients stood with their families beside a display of student projects. The redesigned program had been Grace’s demand as much as anyone’s: less money on flowers, more on the people named in the mission statement.
Amina recognized Vivian near the registration table.
She was not wearing a volunteer badge. She was simply attending, holding a paper cup of coffee and listening to an older woman in a raincoat.
A staff member approached the woman to check her name. Vivian stepped aside so they could speak directly. No intervention, no assumption that she could settle attendance herself.
Then she noticed Amina.
Her smile faltered. She did not hurry over.
Amina could have walked straight to the doors.
Instead, she crossed the lobby.
“Good evening.”
“Good evening,” Vivian said.
Up close, she looked much the same. Amina found that reassuring in an odd way. People did not acquire new faces because they had been forced to examine old behavior.
“How are you?” Vivian asked, then winced. “You don’t have to answer that.”
“I’m well.”
“I’m glad.”
They stood quietly while a young man guided his father toward the display. The father’s suit jacket was a little tight across the shoulders. The son kept touching his arm, smiling with the helpless pride of someone who wanted a parent to see everything at once.
Vivian watched them.
“I still think about it,” she said.
Amina knew what she meant.
“So do I.”
Vivian nodded. There was no request in her face now, only the effort of accepting an answer she could not improve.
“Thank you for speaking to me.”
Amina considered her.
“Take care, Vivian.”
She left before either of them tried to make the moment bigger than it was.
Outside, rain silvered the pavement. Daniel waited under the awning, looking at his phone.
“Car’s two minutes away.”
“I’m walking.”
“In those shoes?”
“They’ve survived worse rooms.”
He grinned, then put away his phone.
“Dinner?”
“Only if we discuss something completely unimportant.”
“I have strong opinions about the hotel lobby carpet.”
“Perfect.”
At the curb, Amina looked back once.
High above them, the boardroom lights were still on. Somewhere inside, Helen was filing the minutes, Grace was answering a question, and someone was carrying away empty coffee cups.
Amina thought of the woman who had stood there with a burning cheek, trying to keep her hands from shaking.
She wished she could go back for one minute. Not to warn her. Not to tell her what would happen to the people in that room.
Just to stand beside her so she would not have to feel alone.
The traffic signal changed.
Daniel opened his umbrella and held it between them.
Amina stepped off the curb.
Behind her, the company continued without the Whitmores at its center.
Ahead, someone had a table waiting, the evening was still hers, and her phone was finally quiet.
