"The Woman They Shouldn’t Have Slapped" Chapter 9
The Price of Staying
Richard attended Monday’s meeting as a shareholder, without his old assistant or his old seat.
Grace put him at the end of the table with the other invited participants.
He sat where she directed him.
For ninety minutes they examined options. Amina’s investment committee had authorized only so much additional exposure. The other shareholders had limits, too. A company could have valuable assets and still run out of time.
Then Richard cleared his throat.
“The family investment office can contribute.”
Grace looked up.
“How much, and when?”
He named a figure.
Priya stopped typing.
“What’s the source?” she asked.
“Sale of the family townhouse and two investment properties. We have preliminary offers on the investments. The townhouse will take longer.”
Grant’s remaining representative began to object. Richard lifted a hand.
“These are assets I control. Not my brother’s.”
Amina watched him.
“Is this an offer, or a way to reopen discussions about your position?”
“An offer.”
“And the review?”
“Continues.”
“Your brother?”
“My brother has a lawyer.”
Grace asked for documentation. Richard handed over a folder and agreed to an independent review of the terms. Nobody applauded. They had numbers to test.
Later, in the corridor, Amina found him looking at a photograph of the company’s first hotel.
“My wife loved that house,” he said.
Amina stood beside him.
“I’m sorry.”
“She used to say it was too big. I always assumed she was joking.”
He put his hands in his pockets.
“Vivian is furious about the sale.”
“Does she live there?”
“No. She has her apartment.”
“Then she has somewhere to be furious.”
Richard gave a tired laugh.
“Yes.”
He looked at Amina.
“This won’t make us even.”
“No.”
“I know.”
For once, she believed he did.
The transaction did not save the company in an afternoon. Documentation took weeks. The investment properties sold first, and the family office arranged a temporary contribution against its own resources while the townhouse sale proceeded.
Combined with the bridge, operating changes, and other agreed asset sales, the contribution bought enough time to avoid accepting the rushed hotel offer.
Two locations still required restructuring. Grace told the affected teams herself. There were transfers, negotiations, and difficult departures. Amina refused to pretend saving most of the business meant nobody had been hurt.
Marisol’s claim was addressed separately through her own counsel. She received compensation and a corrected employment record. When offered the chance to apply for a new role, she declined.
“I have a job,” she told Amina over the phone. “At a hospital network. They ask questions before they buy things.”
“I’m glad.”
“I wanted you to know I’m all right.”
After the call, Amina sat very still.
That mattered, too.
The independent review continued. Where it found evidence of criminal conduct, the material went to the appropriate authorities. Amina signed statements, answered questions, and let lawyers do work that belonged to lawyers.

Months passed before the cases against Ethan and Grant moved beyond allegations. There were more months after that. They had different lawyers and, increasingly, different accounts of the same transactions.
Ethan eventually admitted his part in routing payments through the linked vendor. Grant fought longer. His own correspondence and the records Richard supplied made that defense steadily harder.
Amina did not attend every proceeding. She had a business to run and a life that had narrowed too much around people she disliked.
One evening, almost a year after the slap, Daniel called to tell her the final outcome of the assault matter. Vivian had admitted what she had done and accepted the resulting penalties and conditions. There would be no further need for Amina to meet her about it.
Amina thanked him, ended the call, and discovered she had been holding her breath.
She stood in her kitchen with a knife in one hand and half an onion on the board.
Her mother, visiting for dinner, looked up from the stove.
“Finished?”
“That part.”
Mariama nodded and turned down the heat.
“Come here.”
Amina set down the knife.
Her mother held her without asking for a report. Amina leaned into the familiar smell of soap and cooking oil and let herself be somebody’s daughter.
After a while, Mariama stepped back and touched her face, gently, on the uninjured side.
“Now finish the onion.”
Amina laughed through wet eyes.
“Yes, Mom.”
The next morning, an invitation arrived from Helen.
The annual shareholder meeting would take place in the same room.
Grace would present the recovery results. Margaret would introduce two new directors. Amina would speak about the next stage of the investment.
At the bottom, Helen had added a personal note.
Your seat is confirmed. No need to arrive early unless you want to.
Amina read it, smiled, and accepted.
