"The Woman They Shouldn’t Have Slapped" Chapter 8
What an Apology Could Not Buy
Vivian returned on Monday with no proposal from Ethan and no request from her father.
She had asked whether Amina would hear an apology. Amina had agreed to fifteen minutes.
This time they sat in Amina’s office. The door remained open at her request.
“I hit you,” Vivian said. “Then I tried to make people think you caused it. Both things were deliberate.”
Amina let her continue.
“I kept telling myself I was protecting a place I belonged. But I didn’t ask the men at the table why they were there.”
“No.”
“I asked you because I thought I could.”
The silence that followed was unpleasant, but Vivian did not fill it.
Amina remembered the first meeting, the fingers around the bag strap, the expectation that remorse would produce an answer she could use.
“What are you asking for today?”
“Nothing.”
“Not forgiveness?”
Vivian looked at her own hands.
“I want it. I don’t think wanting it gives me the right to ask.”
Amina studied her.
“The security report is complete. I’ve given a statement and preserved the recording. Daniel will handle further communication about the assault. I won’t use the company review to negotiate it away.”
Vivian nodded, pale.
“I understand.”
Amina was not certain she did. But for once, Vivian did not ask her to explain the consequences gently.
“I ended things with Ethan,” Vivian said.
“That’s your decision.”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“I thought you might be pleased.”
“It doesn’t change what happened between you and me.”
Vivian absorbed that with visible effort.
“No. It doesn’t.”
When she rose to leave, she looked toward the green jacket hanging behind the door. Amina had worn it again that morning. She had refused to let it become an object she avoided.
“I’m sorry,” Vivian said once more.
“I heard you.”
It was all Amina could honestly offer.
Afterward she sat alone until her next meeting. Then she opened the cash forecast and went back to work.
The new interim chief executive, Grace Lin, arrived with practical shoes, an unadorned notebook, and no interest in describing the company as a family.
“What can we pay on Friday?” she asked.
Priya answered. Grace asked about the following Friday.
By noon they had a proposal: restricted bridge funding, tighter approvals, cancellation of several discretionary commitments, and the sale of assets the business did not need to operate.
Executive bonuses were suspended. A costly anniversary gala was canceled. Grace refused a suggestion that they begin with broad layoffs before examining the actual operating requirements.
Amina appreciated her without immediately liking her. Grace questioned every optimistic assumption, including Amina’s.
“You want to keep the hotels,” Grace said.
“They generate cash.”
“They also need maintenance. We can’t value them as though roofs don’t leak.”
Amina looked at the expenditure schedule again.
“Then put the roofs in.”
They did.
The revised picture was worse, but usable.
That week Amina met employees from three divisions. They asked direct, unromantic questions. Would payroll arrive? Were their pensions affected? Who would approve purchase orders now that Grant was gone?
One hotel manager stood after the others had spoken.
“People are saying this started because of what happened in the boardroom.”
Amina could feel Daniel shift beside her.
“It started earlier,” she said. “We had requested records before that evening. What happened there made some failures visible. It didn’t create the missing money.”
The manager nodded.
“Can you keep us open?”
“I’m working with Grace on that. I won’t promise every location stays exactly as it is. I can promise you’ll hear decisions from management before someone leaks them as a rumor.”
It was a smaller promise than he wanted. He thanked her anyway.
On Friday, payroll went through.
Amina stood in Priya’s office while they checked the confirmation. Neither woman spoke for a moment.
Then Priya leaned back.
“I’m going to buy an offensively large lunch.”
“Put it on my card.”
“I was going to.”
Amina laughed properly for the first time in days.
At four, Grace called another meeting.
A lender had declined to renew a facility on the terms they had requested. The bridge bought time, but the family’s historic arrangements had left more pressure in the business than the review team initially understood.
One available buyer wanted the hotel division.
The offer was real. So were the jobs attached to it, the properties that might be closed, and the chance that a rushed sale would solve today’s problem by creating a larger one tomorrow.
Grace spread the terms across the table.
“We need an alternative by Wednesday.”
Amina looked at the date.
Five days.
This time, picking up her phone would not be enough.
