"The Woman They Shouldn’t Have Slapped" Chapter 6
The Woman Who Had Already Spoken
Marisol chose a diner in Queens for their first meeting.
Amina arrived with Daniel and found her seated facing the door. She wore a dark coat she had not taken off. A folder rested under one elbow.
“I didn’t want to go to your office,” she said.
“That’s fine.”
“I don’t know who talks to whom.”
“Neither do we yet,” Amina said. “That’s a reasonable concern.”
Marisol studied her, then moved the folder onto the table.
“I worked for Whitmore eleven years. Procurement. I questioned three vendors because their proposals had identical errors.”
“What kind?” Daniel asked.
“The same wrong address for one of our properties. The same missing page. Different logos, same document.”
A waitress came over. Marisol ordered tea. Amina ordered breakfast because she had learned something from the previous week.
“They told me I was slowing the business down,” Marisol continued. “Then my manager changed. Then my performance became a problem.”
“Who received your original report?”
“Finance, operations, and the executive office.”
“Richard’s office?” Amina asked.
“Yes.”
Marisol opened the folder. Inside were her own correspondence, performance reviews, and a termination letter. She had brought an index she had typed at home.
Amina felt a small, uncomfortable recognition. A capable woman arranging facts in order because she knew emotion would be used against her.
“Do you still have the original emails?” Daniel asked.
“In my personal records. These were messages I sent asking about my complaint. I didn’t take a server.”
“We’re not asking you to obtain anything you shouldn’t. Independent counsel can compare these with the company archive.”
Marisol nodded.
“My son said not to come. He said rich people fight, and people like us get crushed between them.”
Amina did not answer immediately.
“I can’t promise this will be easy,” she said. “I can make sure you have your own lawyer to explain your options, rather than relying on ours. And we can document what you provide before anyone responds to it.”
“Who pays for that lawyer?”
“An independent arrangement through the review. You choose whether to use it.”
Marisol looked at Daniel. He nodded.
The tea arrived. She wrapped her hands around it.
“I saw the article about what happened to you.”
Amina waited.
“I thought, if they’ll do that to someone who can buy the building, maybe somebody will finally believe what happened in the basement.”
Amina’s fork stopped above her plate.
“I believe you reported something,” she said carefully. “Now we make sure it can’t be dismissed.”
They stayed ninety minutes.
By the end, Marisol had agreed to meet independent counsel. She took her originals home. Daniel arranged a secure transfer of copies with her permission.
The company archive supplied the rest over the following days.
Her complaint had been received. It had been forwarded. A meeting about her “fit” had followed less than a week later.
Richard’s executive assistant had acknowledged the original report.
Grant had added one line to the internal thread: We need people who understand commercial realities.
Amina read it without speaking.
Then a payroll manager named Lewis Benton contacted Helen. He had received a request to change the description of a retention payment to one of Grant’s favored executives.
He had refused. Someone had removed him from the payment workflow that afternoon.
The review team intervened before his access change became permanent. Helen preserved the request and the instructions that followed it.
For the first time, a consequence arrived while the person being pressured was still at his desk.
That mattered more to Amina than any public statement.
On Thursday, however, Marisol called Daniel in tears.
A former colleague had warned her that people were asking whether she had stolen company material. The question had reached a recruiter she was speaking to about a new job.
Amina read the call summary and shut her office door.
“Who asked?”
“We’re tracing it,” Daniel said.
“Ask independent counsel to address it with their lawyers today.”
“Already doing it.”
“And tell Marisol I’ll meet her again if she wants.”
“She said she doesn’t want another meeting. She wants this to stop.”
Amina nodded, chastened.
“Then let’s focus on that.”
By evening, counsel had issued preservation demands concerning communications about witnesses. The recruiter agreed to document the approach. Marisol’s own lawyer would handle her response.
At six, Helen called.
“Richard wants to see you. Alone.”
“About what?”
“He wouldn’t tell me.”
Amina almost said no.
Then Helen added, “He’s carrying an old paper file. He looks ill.”
Richard arrived before seven.
He placed the folder on Amina’s desk with both hands.
“My brother asked me to destroy this,” he said.
