"The Woman They Shouldn’t Have Slapped" Chapter 5
What He Wanted from Her
On Saturday morning, Vivian requested a meeting through Daniel.
Amina nearly declined. She had planned to buy groceries, answer two emails, and spend an hour doing absolutely nothing useful.
Instead, she gave Vivian twenty minutes in Diop Capital’s small conference room, with Daniel present.
Vivian arrived without the burgundy satin dress or the pearls. Her plain gray sweater did not make her look innocent. It made her look cold.
“Ethan said you could end this,” she began.
Amina set down her pen.
“Which part?”
“The investigation. If my father agrees to a settlement.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Did Ethan tell you to bring that proposal?”
“He said it would save everyone a lot of pain.”
“What pain does he expect you to save?” Amina asked.
Vivian looked between them.
“He said he could lose his career over administrative mistakes.”
“Have you seen the payment records?”
“No.”
“Then you should ask him why he sent you here without explaining them.”
Vivian’s fingers tightened around her bag strap.
“You think I’m stupid.”
“I think he gave you a job that exposed you and protected him.”
The sentence struck harder than Amina intended. Vivian looked down.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vivian took out her phone.
“He sent me talking points.”
Daniel did not reach for it.
“Those are your messages. If you want us to consider them, we can discuss how to preserve them properly. You don’t have to decide this second.”
Vivian scrolled anyway.
Amina could see the shape of the conversation without reading the screen: long instructions, short replies. Vivian had been asking questions. Ethan had been giving orders.
“He told me to say Dad approved everything,” Vivian said.
“Did he?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then don’t say it.”
Vivian put the phone facedown.
“He’s at my apartment. He’s been there since Thursday.”
Amina waited.
“He says reporters might wait outside his building.”
“Are you asking us for help making him leave?” Daniel said.
“No. I can do that.”
Her answer was sharp enough to sound like the woman from the boardroom. Then she seemed to hear herself.
“I think I can,” she amended.
Amina checked the clock. They had six minutes left.
“Why were you so certain I didn’t belong there?”
Vivian went still.
“I’ve been trying to figure that out.”
“Try now.”
“I knew everyone else.”
“No, you didn’t. There were two new investors at the table.”
Vivian’s eyes filled.
“They looked like people I expected.”
Amina let the answer remain in the room.
“Thank you for finally saying something true.”
Vivian flinched.
“I’m not asking you to like me.”
“That makes this easier.”
A startled, miserable sound escaped her. Not quite a laugh.
When the twenty minutes ended, Vivian asked Daniel for a secure way to provide the messages. He explained the next steps. She left without asking Amina to shake her hand.

That afternoon, Amina went grocery shopping after all.
She stood in front of a shelf of tomatoes and realized she had read the same label four times. A woman reached around her, apologized, and moved on.
Amina put the jar back.
For days she had been functioning with a clarity that felt almost pleasant. Every task had a place. Every document had a number. Now, between pasta sauce and olive oil, the delayed reaction arrived.
She abandoned her basket and went outside.
Her sister-in-law, Leah, answered on the second ring.
“Can you talk?” Amina asked.
“Of course.”
“I don’t want advice.”
“Good. I’m folding tiny socks. My authority is limited.”
Amina laughed, then cried so suddenly she had to turn toward a brick wall.
Leah said nothing foolish. She stayed on the line.
When Amina could speak again, she said, “I hate that it still hurts.”
“Someone hit you.”
“I know.”
“You don’t have to be impressive about it.”
Amina wiped her face with the heel of her hand.
Across the street, a little boy in a red jacket was refusing to hold his father’s hand. The father waited, patient and exhausted, until the child reached for him.
“I’ll come Sunday,” Amina said.
“Your mother already bought enough food for twelve.”
“There are seven of us.”
“She knows.”
By evening, Daniel had received the messages Vivian chose to provide. They did not prove the entire financial case. They showed Ethan trying to get Richard’s daughter to carry an unsupported explanation into a meeting with the investor reviewing him.
There was also a voice message.
Vivian had forwarded it after a separate exchange with Daniel about preserving the original.
Ethan sounded irritated.
“Stop making this about your apology. Your father still has influence. Use it. What do you think we’ve been doing for three years?”
Amina listened once.
Then she closed the file.
At nine, a new email appeared in the review team’s inbox.
The sender had used a personal address.
I worked in procurement until last winter. I reported the vendors. Grant had me removed from my job. If you really intend to keep looking, I can tell you where to start.
Below it was a name.
Marisol Vega.
