"The Billionaire Husband My Sister Humiliated" Chapter 9 — My Sister Knew Everything
Victoria was packing diamonds into a velvet travel case when Emily entered the Greenwich mansion.
“You can't just walk in,” Victoria snapped.
“I used my key.”
“Mother changed the locks.”
“Apparently not all of them.”
Emily closed the bedroom door. She had rehearsed a dozen speeches on the drive, but the sight of her sister's expensive luggage erased them all.
“You saw Dad,” she said.
Victoria's fingers stopped moving. “What?”
“He's alive. He remembers you visiting.”
“That man is confused.”
“Then tell me where you were the day you wore a red coat to the Hudson Valley.”
Victoria turned pale.
Emily placed copies of payment records on the dresser. Investigators had found reimbursements for a trip and communications between Victoria and Margaret around the same period. The records did not prove every allegation, but they destroyed Victoria's claim that she knew nothing.
“I was twenty,” Victoria whispered.
“Old enough to call the police.”
“Mother said he was dangerous. She said he had lost his mind.”
“You saw him locked away and never told me.”
Victoria's eyes flashed. “You always got everything. His attention. His patience. Every time you cried, he dropped what he was doing.”
“He was our father.”
“He wasn't mine by blood, and he never let me forget it.”
Emily recoiled. Richard had adopted Victoria, paid for her education, and proudly introduced her as his daughter. Whatever insecurities Victoria carried, they could not excuse what she had done.
“He chose you, too,” Emily said. “You were too busy counting what I had to see it.”
Victoria looked away.
“I didn't arrange what happened to him,” she said. “I found out afterward. Mother told me the company would collapse if anyone knew.”
“And you helped destroy records.”
Victoria began to cry. “She said she'd cut me off.”
Emily's voice was quiet. “You didn't just steal my inheritance. You stole my father.”
For a moment Victoria looked like the frightened girl Emily remembered from childhood. Then her expression hardened.
At Eleanor's office, Emily reviewed the possible consequences of Victoria's admissions. She was tempted to post the recordings and expose her sister immediately. Eleanor warned that publicity could damage the investigation and might harm people whose roles were not yet clear. Emily put down her phone. She wanted the truth to survive cross-examination, not merely trend for an afternoon. She thought of the wedding guests filming her humiliation. Their clips had traveled faster than any explanation. She would not repeat that cruelty simply because she now had a stronger position. Her anger remained. So did her decision to seek accountability. Those two things could coexist without turning her into Victoria.
“You think your husband is a saint?”
Emily turned toward the door.
“Ask him why he was investigating our family before he met you.”
Emily stopped.
Victoria gave a brittle laugh. “You didn't know? Alexander Reed was tracking Charles's companies years ago. He knew exactly who you were.”

Victoria followed Emily into the hallway before she left. For one moment she seemed ready to apologize. Instead she asked whether Richard had mentioned her by name. Emily said yes. Victoria pressed her lips together and looked away. “He never understood what it was like to be second,” she muttered. Emily replied that love was not a contest with only one winner. Victoria did not answer. Emily walked out knowing she could not make her sister accept responsibility. The confession, the payments, and the memories would have to be examined by people whose judgment was not tangled in childhood rivalry. She could mourn the sister she wanted without trusting the sister she had. In the car she called Richard simply to hear his voice. He asked whether she had eaten lunch, just as he used to when she was a girl. She said she had, although she had only managed coffee. He told her not to skip meals. She promised to do better. It was a small exchange, and it made her smile even as she wiped away tears.
Emily wanted to dismiss it as another lie. But she remembered the pause when she'd asked Alexander to promise there were no more secrets.
At home, Alexander was preparing dinner. The ordinary smell of garlic and butter nearly broke her heart.
“Were you investigating Bennett Development before we met?” she asked.
He set down the knife.
Emily drove past the Plaza Hotel on her way back to the city. The entrance looked ordinary now, busy with tourists and taxis. She remembered Victoria holding a microphone as though it were a weapon. She also remembered the waiter who had refused to move her chair until someone else insisted. Humiliation had been the beginning of this journey, but it would not be its defining moment. She wanted the next chapter of her life to be about what she built, not only what she survived.
“Yes.”
The single word landed harder than Victoria's accusations.
“How long?”
“About eight months.”
“Did you know who I was at the diner?”
“I knew your name. I didn't plan to meet you there.”
Emily stepped backward. “You knew I was Richard Bennett's daughter.”
“Yes.”
“And you let me believe we met by chance.”
On the drive away from Greenwich, Emily stopped at the public library where she and Victoria used to spend rainy afternoons. She remembered reading stories aloud while Victoria pretended not to listen. Their childhood had not been entirely cruel. That made the betrayal harder, not easier. Emily called Eleanor and asked whether Victoria could be compelled to preserve her old correspondence. Eleanor explained the legal process and warned against confronting potential witnesses repeatedly. Emily agreed to let investigators handle the evidence. She did not want anger to ruin a case built with care. At the library she borrowed a novel without looking at its title. For half an hour she sat at a table and read nothing. Finally she wrote a note to herself: I can love who my sister used to be without excusing who she became. She put the note in her purse and went home to face the harder conversation waiting there.
“We did meet by chance.”
“Not the whole chance, Alexander. You already had a file on my family.”
He looked ashamed. “I should have told you.”
“Why didn't you?”
“Because every time I tried, I thought you'd believe I married you for access to your family. By then I loved you, and I was afraid.”
Emily stared at the dinner he had made. Two plates. Her favorite bread. A life built on countless small acts of care, with a hidden foundation she had never inspected.
“Did you use me?”
“No.”
“Then prove it without asking me to trust you.”
Alexander nodded. “You can have the complete investigation file. Your own attorney can examine it.”
“Good.”
She took her overnight bag from the closet.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“Somewhere I can decide what I believe without you standing beside me.”
He did not block the door.
“Emily,” he said softly, “I love you.”
She closed her eyes. “I know. That's what makes this hurt.”
Outside, the evening air felt sharp and unfamiliar.
Her phone vibrated with a message from Victoria.
I warned you. Everyone has a price.
Emily deleted it. She wasn't going to let her sister write the ending of her marriage.
But she wasn't going to let Alexander write it for her, either.
