"The Billionaire Husband My Sister Humiliated" Chapter 6 — The Billionaire's Wife Was Framed
The first headline appeared before sunrise.
BILLIONAIRE'S WIFE LINKED TO MISSING FAMILY FUNDS.
Emily read it in the kitchen while Alexander was on the phone with Eleanor. The article cited anonymous records alleging she had authorized suspicious transactions as a teenager. It omitted her age and the fact that the signatures were disputed.
By breakfast, strangers were calling her a thief.
Victoria posted a video from the Greenwich mansion. “I tried to protect my little sister. Unfortunately, marrying money seems to have changed her.”
Emily watched the clip once and switched it off.
Alexander entered. “Our lawyers can demand corrections.”
“I want the original documents released to investigators first.”
“Agreed.”
“Don't buy the story off the internet. Don't threaten anyone.”
“I wasn't going to.”
She gave him a look.
He admitted, “I considered calling the publisher.”
“Call the publisher with evidence.”
He nodded. “Fair.”
Daniel reported that several Reed Capital board members wanted reassurance about conflicts of interest. Alexander had disclosed the firm's Bennett-related holdings, but the publicity increased scrutiny.
“Let them scrutinize,” he said. “Separate my personal relationship from every investment decision. I want an independent review.”
Emily admired his restraint. Power had frightened her since she was young. Seeing him accept limits made it easier to trust him.
The next problem came from the recovery center. Richard's proposed transfer had been suspended pending a welfare review, but the facility would not allow Emily to see him until identity and consent issues were resolved.
Ruth agreed to speak with investigators. Nora located a former administrator willing to confirm that Richard had been admitted under an alias. There were indications that his treatment plan had been improperly influenced by an outside guardian.
“Can we bring him home?” Emily asked.
“Not yet,” Eleanor said. “First we establish who has legal authority, whether he can consent, and whether a crime occurred.”
Emily hated waiting. Every hour felt stolen from her father.
At noon, Margaret called.
“You've embarrassed this family enough,” she said.
“You told me my father was dead.”
A silence followed.
Daniel reported that a company employee had been pressured to delete old vendor correspondence. The employee had refused and preserved a record of the request. Alexander directed Daniel to protect the employee from retaliation and provide the information to independent counsel. Emily listened from the doorway. She had spent years assuming wealthy people could erase inconvenient truths with a signature. Now she saw how much depended on people who were not famous or powerful: a clerk who saved an email, a nurse who filed a complaint, an accountant who kept a box of ledgers. She wrote their names in her notebook, not as props in her story but as people who had taken risks. When this was over, she wanted the company to become a place where telling the truth did not require courage.
“Grief makes people imagine things,” Margaret replied.

“I have a witness.”
“Then I hope your witness has a good lawyer.”
The line went dead.
Emily's phone filled with messages after the press conference. Some came from strangers offering support; others were vicious. She gave the device to Alexander for an hour and went for a walk. When she returned, he had not deleted anything. Instead he had organized the messages that might contain threats for her attorney to review. She thanked him. It was a small demonstration of the boundary she had requested: help without control. At dinner she told him she was afraid of what her father might remember. Alexander said he would sit with her through the answer, even if it was painful. Emily believed he meant it.
Emily stared at the phone. The threat was unmistakable.
She decided to speak publicly. Eleanor helped her prepare a statement focused on verified facts. Emily would not accuse anyone of kidnapping or fraud without evidence, but she could deny signing documents at sixteen and announce that the records had been referred to authorities.
The press conference took place outside the attorney's office. Cameras crowded the sidewalk.
“Did your husband finance this campaign against your family?” a reporter shouted.
Before bed, Emily read the statement she had delivered to reporters. It was plain and factual, without the insults Victoria had used. For a moment she worried that restraint would look weak. Then she remembered her father's advice from a childhood argument: if you have the truth, you don't need to shout it. She put the pages away. Tomorrow she would follow another lead, and the day after that another. Her story would be built from evidence, not volume.
“No,” Emily said. “I requested an independent examination of documents bearing my name. I want the truth, not a publicity war.”
“Isn't this about inheriting millions?”
“It's about whether a teenager's signature was forged. That would matter if the amount were forty dollars.”
Another reporter asked whether Alexander was controlling her.
Emily looked directly into the camera. “My husband didn't buy my silence. He gave me the courage to speak. The decisions I make now are mine.”
She stepped away before anyone could twist another answer.
Across town, Victoria watched the broadcast with a sour expression. Jason sat on the opposite end of the sofa, reviewing an email from compliance.
“Your video made this worse,” he said.
After the press conference, Emily called her former supervisor, who had once encouraged her to become a forensic accountant. The woman offered to connect her with an independent specialist and warned her to preserve every message, even the cruel ones. Emily spent the afternoon creating a timeline: school dates, disputed signatures, account transfers, letters, and public statements. The task gave shape to her anger. She marked facts in blue, questions in black, and unverified claims in red. Alexander saw the pages spread across the dining table and offered to have an assistant organize them. Emily declined. “I need to understand it myself,” she said. He brought her dinner and left the documents untouched. That night, an old friend texted to say she believed Emily. It was a small message, but Emily saved it. Public accusations had made her feel exposed; one ordinary expression of trust reminded her that not everyone was waiting for her to fail.
“She's lying.”
“You don't know that.”
Victoria glared. “Whose side are you on?”
“The side that doesn't send me to prison for false invoices.”
He stood and walked upstairs to pack a bag.
After the press conference, a courier approached Eleanor's receptionist with a padded envelope. It contained a small digital recorder and a note naming a storage unit.
Nora checked the device before anyone played it. The audio quality was poor. A man coughed, breathed heavily, and spoke in a voice Emily knew from childhood.
“Emmy. If you're hearing this, I failed to protect you.”
Emily gripped Alexander's hand.
“Margaret betrayed me. Charles helped her. I found the accounts, and then they told me I was sick.”
The recording crackled.
“There's a copy of the trust amendment. Eleanor knows what I intended. Don't sign anything they put in front of you.”
A door slammed in the background. Richard's voice dropped to a whisper.
“If I disappear, remember this: I never chose Victoria over you.”
The file ended.
Emily couldn't speak. For eleven years she had believed her father had abandoned her in death and in his will. Now his voice had reached across that silence.
Eleanor checked the note. “The storage unit is registered to a former Bennett employee.”
“Can we open it?” Emily asked.
“With authorization.”
Alexander squeezed her hand. “We'll do it right.”
Emily nodded. She was tired of secrets. This time every door would open in daylight.
