"The Billionaire Husband My Sister Humiliated" Chapter 5 — The Dead Man's Secret
The letter was written on cheap white paper. That detail bothered Emily more than the words.
Her father had owned fountain pens, engraved stationery, and a desk large enough for four people. If he was alive, why would he send a note that looked as though it had been stolen from a motel?
Eleanor warned her not to treat the letter as proof. “Someone may be trying to manipulate you.”
“Then we'll find out who,” Emily said.
Daniel brought in a licensed investigator, Nora Ellis, a former federal financial analyst. Nora reviewed the accident report, the passenger manifest, and insurance records.
“The plane was destroyed in a remote area,” she explained. “The initial identification relied heavily on documents and a limited set of remains. We need the underlying forensic records.”
Emily felt sick. “You mean they never really identified him?”
“I'm saying we haven't seen adequate evidence yet.”
Alexander insisted that every step be documented. He had the resources to move quickly, but Emily wanted facts, not a story bought by the richest man in the room.
At Greenwich, Margaret received a call from Charles Mercer.
“Someone requested the old insurance file,” he said.
“Who?”
“An investigator working for Reed.”
Margaret went cold. “You told me those records were sealed.”
“They were. Someone has been careless.”
Victoria entered while her mother was speaking. Margaret turned away and lowered her voice.
“He can never come back. Not now.”
Victoria froze. “Who can't come back?”
Margaret ended the call. “A former employee.”
“You're lying.”
“Then stop listening at doors.”
Victoria watched her mother leave. For the first time, she wondered whether the fortune she had defended so fiercely rested on something worse than fraud.
Meanwhile, Nora found a post-accident verification attempt on an old policy account. The timestamp was three months after Richard's reported death. It did not prove he was alive; credentials could be misused. But the access came from a medical administration network in the Hudson Valley.
Emily insisted on going.
Alexander drove rather than hiring a chauffeur. They stopped at a roadside diner, and he ordered coffee while she picked at toast.
“Tell me about him,” he said.
At the recovery center, Nora asked the director to preserve records and explained that a legal request would follow. The director insisted the facility had complied with every applicable rule. Ruth's account suggested otherwise, but no one argued in the hallway. Emily watched a family visit another patient and wondered how many ordinary moments her father had been denied. She imagined him waiting by a window on holidays, believing his daughter was dead. Alexander saw her expression and suggested they step outside. They walked beneath bare trees until she could breathe again. “I want to be angry at someone,” she admitted. “You can be,” he said. “Just don't let anger make the decisions investigators need to make carefully.” She hated that he was right. Then she asked him to stay beside her while she waited for the call that could change everything.

“My dad?”
“Not the company. The person.”
Emily looked out at the rain. “He couldn't sing. He thought he could. He'd make up terrible songs while driving me to school.”
On the drive back toward Manhattan, Emily asked Nora to explain what would happen if the nurse's recollection proved mistaken. Nora described the other avenues they could pursue, including insurance records and financial transactions. Emily listened carefully. She did not want to stake her entire hope on one witness. When the car passed a school bus, she remembered Richard waiting for her after class with hot chocolate in a paper cup. The memory arrived with such force that she pressed a hand against the window. Alexander asked whether she needed to stop. She shook her head. They were close enough to the truth that turning around felt impossible.
Alexander smiled. “You inherited that.”
“I sing beautifully.”
“You sing loudly.”
She laughed, then began to cry. Alexander reached across the table and held her hand without speaking.
Emily left a written message with the center's legal office asking that Richard be told his daughter was alive and seeking contact, subject to his wishes and medical advice. She signed it Emily Bennett Reed, then stared at the name. It contained both the family she was trying to recover and the marriage that had helped her find courage. She wondered whether Richard would recognize either part. Alexander watched her seal the envelope. “He'll recognize your voice,” he said. Emily hoped he was right.
“I don't know whether I want this to be true,” she confessed. “If he's alive, where has he been? Why didn't he find me?”
“Those are questions he may not have been free to answer.”
Nora met them outside a private recovery center surrounded by trees. The director refused to disclose patient information. Eleanor, who had arranged lawful requests for records and welfare checks, reminded them they couldn't simply demand entry.
An older nurse leaving her shift noticed the photograph Emily held.
“Where did you get that picture?” she asked.
Emily turned. “It's my father.”
The nurse's name was Ruth Palmer. She had worked at the center for nineteen years. Her face drained of color as she studied the photograph.
“I know this man.”
Nora interviewed a retired aircraft mechanic who had inspected Richard's plane before its final flight. He remembered a last-minute change to the passenger manifest and an argument with a company representative. He refused to speculate about sabotage. “I saw paperwork, not a crime,” he said. Nora thanked him for being precise. Emily appreciated the distinction, even though she desperately wanted certainty. At the motel that evening, she spread photographs across the bed: Richard smiling at a birthday party, Richard beside a groundbreaking ceremony, Richard holding her hand outside school. Alexander brought tea and sat on the floor rather than disturb the arrangement. “What if I don't recognize him?” she asked. “Then you can learn who he is now,” Alexander replied. “Neither of you has to recover eleven years in one afternoon.” Emily stared at the photographs until the faces blurred. She realized that hope could be as frightening as grief because hope demanded that she risk losing him again.
Emily stepped closer. “Was he a patient?”
Ruth glanced toward the building. “I can't discuss confidential records in a parking lot.”
“Please. We thought he died.”
Ruth's eyes filled with tears. “Then you need to speak with your attorney. There are things I reported years ago that no one investigated.”
Eleanor joined the call on speakerphone. Ruth agreed to provide information through proper channels and cooperate with a welfare inquiry.
Before she walked away, Emily asked one question.
“Is he alive?”
Ruth closed her eyes.
“The last time I saw him, yes.”
“When?”
“Three days ago.”
Emily caught the side of the car. Alexander steadied her.
Ruth took a breath. “He has a different name in our system. He has been told he has no family.”
Emily shook her head. “No.”
“He keeps a photograph of a little girl under his pillow,” Ruth whispered. “He calls her Emmy.”
That was her father's nickname for her.
Emily covered her mouth. The parking lot blurred.
Alexander spoke softly. “We're going to get him help.”
Ruth looked back toward the locked doors.
“Then hurry,” she said. “Someone requested his transfer this morning.”
