"The Billionaire Husband My Sister Humiliated" Chapter 3 — My Sister's Husband Owns Everything
By morning, Victoria had decided the wedding had been ruined by a conspiracy.
She stood in the Greenwich mansion where she had grown up, surrounded by unopened gifts and wilting flowers. Her mother, Margaret Bennett, listened without interrupting.
“Emily married him to punish me,” Victoria said. “She planned the entire thing.”
“Emily was never that clever,” Margaret replied.
“Then explain why Alexander Reed pretended to be poor.”
Margaret set down her coffee. “Wealthy men conceal things. Especially from wives they don't trust.”
Victoria clung to the thought. If Alexander was deceiving Emily, she could still win.
Jason entered looking exhausted. “I need every invoice you sent the wedding vendors.”
Victoria rolled her eyes. “We're married less than twenty-four hours and you're talking about invoices?”
“Compliance is reviewing my expense approvals.”
“Tell Alexander to stop.”
“He isn't personally conducting the review.”
“Then call him.”
Jason slammed his briefcase onto the table. “Your sister's husband owns the company that signs my paycheck. And you publicly humiliated his wife.”
Victoria stared. Jason had never raised his voice to her.
“I did it for us,” she said.
“You charged your private wedding expenses to a corporate vendor. You told me it was approved. I signed the forms.”
“You signed them because you wanted to.”
The silence afterward was more damaging than an argument. Jason picked up his briefcase and walked out.
Across Manhattan, Emily stepped out of a car in front of Reed Capital's headquarters. She had refused Alexander's suggestion of a private entrance.
“I want to see the real place,” she told him.
He took her through the lobby. Employees greeted him respectfully, but he introduced her without ceremony. “This is Emily, my wife.”
Daniel Carter met them upstairs with two folders and a concerned expression. “Mrs. Reed, I'm sorry we're meeting under these circumstances.”
“Call me Emily. And show me the records.”
The conference room overlooked Midtown. Daniel displayed the ownership structure of Bennett Development Group. Emily recognized her father's company logo and felt an unexpected ache.
Richard had taken her to construction sites on Saturdays. He told her buildings mattered less than the people who lived and worked inside them. After his death, Margaret had stopped inviting her to board meetings. Emily had been told she wasn't suited to business.
“Bennett Development has substantial debts,” Daniel explained. “One distressed loan was acquired by a fund managed by Reed Capital. That gives the fund creditor rights, not ownership of the company.”
“Can you take the company?” Emily asked Alexander.
“Not by simply making a phone call. And I wouldn't do that to you.”
That evening Emily reopened the file alone. She made a list of the signatures she could prove were genuine: a school permission slip, an old bank application, a birthday card to her father. She found them in a box she had kept through three moves. The handwriting varied with age, but the pattern was hers. The disputed document looked polished and unfamiliar. She photographed everything and sent it to Eleanor rather than posting it online. Victoria would have preferred a public fight. Emily was learning that careful preparation could be more powerful than a clever insult. When Alexander came home, she asked whether the company had ever hired an independent examiner. He said the firm had flagged the anomaly but had not commissioned a full analysis. “Then that's our next step,” she said. “Not a headline. A finding someone can defend in court.”

Daniel opened another file. “The more serious issue is historical transfers. Forty million dollars left Bennett accounts through a series of shell entities.”
“Who approved them?”
“Several signatures appear on the records.”
He slid a document toward her. Emily read the date, then the signature at the bottom.
Her name.
She stared. “I was sixteen.”
Daniel nodded. “That's one reason our counsel flagged it.”
“I was at boarding school that week. Margaret wouldn't even let me come home for the funeral arrangements.”
Alexander sat beside her. “Do you recognize the handwriting?”
Emily called the records office at her old school and requested certified attendance information. The administrator remembered her father donating books to the library. Emily thanked her and explained that she needed dates, not favors. After hanging up, she looked at the company chart again. It had taken a room full of experts to untangle the ownership structure, yet Margaret had reduced the whole story to one sentence: your father left you nothing. Emily wrote that sentence on a sticky note and crossed it out. Then she wrote another: verify everything.
“Someone tried to imitate mine.” She traced the exaggerated loop in the E. “My father taught me to sign my name with a straight line. I never wrote it this way.”
Daniel made a note. “We need the original, not merely a scanned copy. A qualified examiner can compare samples.”
Emily turned another page. Her supposed authorization gave away rights she hadn't known she possessed.
“Why would they need my signature?”
“That,” Daniel said, “is the question.”
At lunch Emily called an old family accountant, Martin Hale. He had retired soon after Richard's disappearance. When she mentioned the transfer, his friendly tone vanished.
“Emily, don't discuss that over the phone.”
“Why?”
Daniel arranged for Emily to speak with the firm's compliance director, a woman named Rachel Kim. Rachel explained that creditors, shareholders, trustees, and company managers held different legal powers. “People on television make a hostile takeover look like signing one check,” she said. “Real businesses have contracts and courts.” Emily laughed for the first time that morning. Rachel showed her how to read the debt schedules and identify transactions that deserved scrutiny. She did not treat Emily as a billionaire's wife. She treated her as a former analyst asking precise questions. Emily stayed an extra hour, making notes in a yellow legal pad. Alexander waited outside with coffee and didn't interrupt. On the drive home, Emily told him she wanted access to the original records through her own lawyer. “You shouldn't have to trust my company's interpretation,” he agreed. That answer mattered more than the building's impressive lobby. It suggested there was still room in their marriage for two people with independent minds.
“Because people lost their jobs for asking questions.”
“Who?”
He hung up.
Emily felt anger replace the fear she had carried since childhood. Somebody had used her grief as cover for theft. Somebody had counted on her never looking back.
Alexander watched her close the folder. “We can slow down.”
“No. I've spent eleven years being told I don't understand money. I understand a forged signature.”
He smiled faintly. “Then where do you want to begin?”
“With the person who said I had no inheritance.”
Margaret answered Emily's call on the third ring.
“What do you want?”
“I want my father's original will.”
A pause.
“Your father left you nothing important.”
“Then you won't mind showing me the document.”
Margaret ended the call.
Emily looked at Alexander. “She hung up.”
“That sounds like an answer.”
“No,” Emily said. “It's the beginning of one.”
Daniel returned carrying a second document. “We found something else. Your signature wasn't only used for a transfer.”
He placed it on the table.
“It was used to waive a claim to voting rights.”
Emily looked up slowly.
“What voting rights?”
