"The Alpha Who Carried His Enemy's Baby" Chapter 4 — The Night That Changed His Blood
Four years earlier, the night King Ulric Blackthorne died, the palace bells rang thirteen times.
There were only twelve bells in the northern tower.
Ethan Ravenscroft remembered that impossible thirteenth note because it sounded just as a needle entered his neck.
He had been crossing the western gallery with a squad of royal guards when the lights failed. An explosion tore through the corridor. Smoke rolled along the ceiling, and one of the men beside him fell without a sound.
Ethan drew his sword.
"Formation! Protect the stairwell!"
The soldiers obeyed automatically. He was twenty-five, the youngest war commander in the history of the Northern Packs, and until that night no one had ever questioned his status as an Alpha. His strength was legendary. His temper, according to Fenrir, was worse.
He caught a masked attacker by the wrist, drove him into a pillar, and tore away his glove.
The attacker wore the seal of the Elder Council.
Ethan hesitated for one fatal instant.
A second figure emerged from the smoke and drove a thin injector beneath his collar.
Cold fire flooded his veins.
Ethan roared, elbowed the attacker hard enough to crack bone, and staggered backward. His wolf surged toward the surface, but instead of the familiar rush of power he felt a terrifying internal fracture, as though something ancient had awakened inside his blood and begun rewriting it.
The attackers fled.
Ethan tried to pursue them. His knees buckled.
His scent changed first.
The sharp pine-and-steel presence that had identified him as an Alpha since adolescence softened into cedar, winter mint, and something unbearably vulnerable. He understood what was happening before he could bear to name it.
Secondary differentiation.
A myth whispered about in forbidden medical records. A transformation so rare that most wolves dismissed it as superstition.
"No," Ethan gasped.
His wolf ears flattened. Pain ripped through his spine. He dragged himself into the ruined west chapel as the palace burned behind him.
He had grown up in this building. His father, Captain Ravenscroft, had died defending King Ulric. The old king had taken Ethan in afterward, raising him under the same roof as Fenrir. They were not blood relatives; Ethan had kept his father's surname and his own military inheritance. But the court had called them brothers, sometimes fondly, sometimes as a warning.
Fenrir had been the impossible older boy who beat every instructor, won every contest, and once broke a prince's nose for mocking Ethan's orphaned status.
Ethan had repaid him by challenging him at everything.
At fifteen they fought over swords. At twenty they fought over command. By twenty-five, they fought most fiercely over the feelings neither could safely admit.
And now Ethan was changing into the very class the Elder Council treated as dependent property.
He heard boots approaching through the debris.
"Stay back!" he shouted.
A familiar voice answered. "Ethan."
Fenrir appeared beneath the broken archway, black uniform torn, blood running from his brow. His father's ceremonial sword hung at his side. Behind him the palace glowed red with fire.

Ethan lifted his own blade, though his hand shook so badly the point wavered.
"Come to exile me?"
Fenrir stopped. "What?"
"The council will demand it. An Omega can't command the northern armies. You know the law."
Fenrir looked at the blood on Ethan's collar, the empty injector near his boot, and the way he struggled to breathe.
His expression became frighteningly calm.
"Who did this?"
"I didn't see their faces. Council insignia. Two attackers."
Fenrir's jaw tightened. "I'll find them."
"And then what? Make me a prisoner in your private wing? Give me silk sheets and tell me to be grateful?"
"Never."
Ethan laughed bitterly. "You're about to become king. You don't get to say never."
Fenrir took one step closer. Ethan flinched as another wave of pain rolled through him. Fenrir stopped at once.
Then, with the entire palace collapsing around them, Fenrir unbuckled the royal sword and laid it on the floor.
He knelt.
Ethan stared at him.
The man who had never bowed to anyone, not even his father in private, lowered himself before Ethan on the cracked chapel stones.
"Tell me to leave, and I will," Fenrir said.
"You'd leave me here?"
"If that's what you truly want, I'll send a healer and stand outside the door. I won't touch you without permission."
The offer stripped Ethan of his last defense. He had expected anger, commands, pity. He had not expected a choice.
"Don't leave," he whispered.
Fenrir moved closer but kept his hands visible. "May I help you sit?"
Ethan nodded.
Fenrir settled beside him against a fallen column. Outside, thunder shook the shattered windows. For a long time neither spoke. Ethan's breathing slowly steadied as Fenrir guided him through the worst of the transformation with water, a cool cloth, and the steady rhythm of his own breath.
"I'm not an Alpha anymore," Ethan said at last.
"You're Ethan."
"That isn't enough for the council."
"It is enough for me."
"Easy for you to say. You're the Black Wolf. You'll wear the crown by morning."
Fenrir looked at him with naked exhaustion. "I lost my father tonight. Half the palace wants my throne. And I thought I'd lost you too."
Ethan had never heard him sound so young.
"You were always trying to control me," Ethan said.
"I was trying to keep you close."
"You could have asked."
"You would have laughed in my face."
"Probably."
A reluctant smile flickered between them, gone almost before it appeared.
Fenrir brushed damp hair away from Ethan's eyes only after Ethan leaned toward his hand.
"I hated every man who looked at you," Fenrir confessed. "Not because I thought you belonged to me. Because I wanted something I had no right to demand."
Ethan stared at the ruined altar. "I kept taking assignments at the border because I couldn't stand watching you pretend we were only brothers."

"We grew up together," Fenrir said. "But we both know the truth of our families. And we both know what the court would say."
"Let them say it."
Ethan turned toward him. The fear was still there. So was the pain. But beneath both stood the same stubborn man who had challenged Fenrir to his first duel.
"I want you to kiss me," Ethan said. "Not because my blood has changed. Because I've wanted it for years."
Fenrir searched his face. "Are you certain?"
"I've never been more certain of anything."
Ethan closed the distance himself.
Their first kiss was unsteady, brief, and full of grief. Fenrir's hand came to rest against Ethan's cheek. When Ethan drew him back, the second kiss was warmer, the years of unspoken longing finally given a name.
A fresh wave of discomfort made Ethan pull away.
Fenrir stopped immediately. "We can wait."
"I'm afraid," Ethan admitted.
"I know."
"If this change becomes permanent, they'll take everything."
"They won't take you from yourself."
Ethan pressed his forehead to Fenrir's. "Promise me you won't become one of them."
"I promise."
The old mate bond stirred between them, a possibility neither had dared explore. In the Northern Packs, a bond was not merely a mark on the skin. It was a voluntary exchange of trust, a promise carried by scent and spirit. Fenrir explained what he knew. Ethan asked questions until his voice was steady again.
"No council ceremony?" Ethan asked.
"Not unless you want one."
"No oath of obedience?"
"Never."
"And if I change my mind?"
"Then we stop."
Ethan held out his hand. "Then I choose you."
Fenrir took it. The bond formed in a quiet shimmer of silver light, leaving a small crescent-shaped mark at Ethan's shoulder, a sign of mutual recognition rather than ownership. Fenrir bore its matching mark above his heart.
They stayed together until the storm weakened, talking of the lives they might build when the fighting ended. Ethan imagined returning to command. Fenrir imagined a kingdom where Ethan could stand beside him without surrendering anything.
Neither knew how quickly that dream would be attacked.
At dawn, Ethan woke alone on a couch in the medical wing. Fenrir had gone to confront the council over the assassination. A folded blanket covered Ethan, and beside him lay a note in Fenrir's familiar handwriting: I will return. Do not let anyone tell you who you are.
Ethan smiled despite the pain.
Then voices sounded beyond the half-open door.
"The new king has bonded with an Omega," said Elder Varrick. "The old statutes are clear."
Another elder asked, "Even if the Omega was once a commander?"
"Especially then. The royal mate must surrender military authority immediately. His movements are to be restricted to palace grounds. He may not depart without the king's permission."
Ethan went cold.
"And if he refuses?" the second elder asked.
Varrick's answer came without hesitation.
"Then we remove his choices for him. The king's mate will never leave this palace."
Ethan looked down at the crescent mark on his shoulder.
For the first time, the promise of love felt like the lock on a door.
