"Blacklisted for Three Years, I Returned with My Genius Son." Chapter 18
Something of His Own
On Noah's first full day at Westbridge, Claire got lost between the office and the classroom.
He didn't.
"The library was left," he reminded her. "Our room is after it."
"I was checking whether you remembered."
"You can just ask."
She laughed and followed him.
Their teacher, Ms. Patel, greeted Noah, then asked Claire what helped when he became frustrated. Claire liked her immediately for not assuming that being quick meant he never struggled.
"Time to explain what's wrong," she said. "And sometimes a reminder that he can leave something unfinished and come back."
Noah looked mildly offended by this accurate description.
At the door, he held her hand for a second longer than usual. Then a child called him over to a tray of gears.
He let go.
Claire walked back to the office alone.
For the first week, the new routine occupied most of her attention. She arranged the bus times, bought a used cargo bicycle with an assisted motor after comparing costs, and practiced the quieter route to school without Noah on the back. Tessa helped check the child seat and made her ride around the block twice.
"You have become very controlling," Claire told her.
"I've always been controlling. You used to be too distracted to appreciate it."
Noah loved the bicycle. He could see more than he could from the bus, and he appointed himself responsible for spotting potholes.
At pickup on Friday, he reported that the puzzles were better, lunch was shorter than necessary, and one boy thought his father owned everything.
"Everything?" Claire asked, fastening his helmet.
"Buildings. Not the ocean. I asked."
"That narrows it down."
"His name's Oliver. He asked what my dad does. I said I live with you. He said that wasn't an answer."
Claire checked the buckle a little too carefully.
"What did you say?"
"That you buy the groceries. Which is useful."
"Did he upset you?"
Noah thought about it.
"A little. Then he couldn't find the library, so I showed him."
She rested a hand on his helmet.
"Tell Ms. Patel if he keeps making you uncomfortable. You don't have to work it all out yourself."
"Okay."
At home, the news about Vivian continued without taking over every meal. Her major partnerships ended. Blackwell Media issued a fuller correction, acknowledging that Claire's contracts had been terminated without an adequate factual review. Mara was handling the practical consequences, including compensation discussions. Alice's records also prompted separate inquiries into Vivian's business, but Claire refused to treat every new allegation as a verdict.
Ryan sent a short message saying Owen had returned to his regular activities and wanted to know whether the dinosaur could stay another week.
Noah dictated an answer allowing two.
Three weeks into the term, parents were invited to observe a collaborative model-building session. Claire arrived on the bicycle and parked between a delivery van and a car polished enough to reflect her helmet.

She sat in the back of the classroom, where eight children were constructing a town. Noah had the water and energy sections. Oliver was designing the roads.
For fifteen minutes, they cooperated through a steady exchange of instructions and complaints.
Then Oliver put an elevated road directly across Noah's pipe layout.
"That can't go there," Noah said.
"It can. It's a bridge."
"But the supports are where the pipes go."
"Then move them."
"They have to reach the houses."
Oliver folded his arms. "You always think your bit is more important."
Claire felt the familiar urge to step in before someone misunderstood her child. She stayed seated and watched Ms. Patel, who was giving them a moment.
Noah looked at the model. His face tightened.
"It isn't more important. It just has to work."
"So does my road."
Noah took one of the supports and held it above a different square.
"What if this part goes here?"
"That's not where the bridge goes."
"It could. Look."
He fetched a piece of paper and drew the two routes. Oliver leaned forward despite himself. They argued about the turn for another minute, then Oliver moved the support.
"Only if we put a park there," he said, pointing at the empty space.
"Okay," Noah said. "People need somewhere to go."
They returned to work.
Claire realized she was smiling before the model was finished.
After the session, Oliver's father introduced himself as Grant Whitmore. He had watched the disagreement with visible discomfort and the solution with interest.
"Your son handled that well," he said.
"They both worked it out."
"Oliver doesn't always get there."
Claire looked through the doorway. The boys were debating whether the park needed ducks.
"He did today."
Grant suggested the children might enjoy meeting outside school. Claire said they could ask them.
On the ride home, Noah announced that Oliver wasn't as annoying when he stopped talking about his father's buildings.
"Is he your friend?"
"Maybe. He let me borrow the long ruler."
"A promising start."
He leaned against the seat back, watching the sidewalk pass.
That evening, Ethan sent material through Mara. Adrian's review had reached his mother's former household manager. The manager had retained messages showing that Eleanor knew the video was misleading before it spread widely. She had used her own contacts to accelerate its coverage.
Claire read the summary once, then called Mara.
"Does Adrian have this?"
"He authorized the release of the materials to us. He's not disputing that they should be available to you."
"And the trust?"
"These records don't change its terms. We can review any concern you have, but the education provision isn't conditional on your silence."
Claire went to the drawer and took out the folder anyway.
Eleanor had sat across from her and said she hadn't objected.
It had been true in the narrowest, most useless sense. She hadn't merely failed to object. She had helped.
In Noah's room, two boys' names appeared across a drawing of a town: NOAH AND OLIVER. Claire could hear him telling Tessa over the watch that the park would definitely have ducks.
She left him to it.
Then she opened Eleanor's contact through Mara and requested another meeting.
Before bed, Noah asked whether Oliver could come over on Saturday.
"We don't have all his things," he added.
"What things?"
"He has a room with a climbing wall."
Claire paused with the clean towel in her hands.
"We have chairs. He can sit on one."
Noah grinned. "And the cardboard garage."
"Exactly."
On Saturday, Oliver arrived with his father and a bag of construction pieces. Ten minutes later, both boys had abandoned them to improve the garage with tape and a cereal box.
Grant accepted coffee in the kitchen while Claire listened to a disagreement about whether the entrance was wide enough for imaginary buses.
Nobody asked her about the broadcast. Nobody mentioned Adrian.
When Oliver left, he asked if the garage would still be there next time. Noah promised to keep it, then spent twenty minutes repairing a corner that had collapsed beneath someone's elbow.
Claire helped hold the cardboard while he taped it.
For once, the problem he brought her was something she could fix with her hands.
