"Blacklisted for Three Years, I Returned with My Genius Son." Chapter 15
No Price Attached
Eleanor's request arrived through Mara.
She wished to meet Claire about an educational provision for Noah. No child attendance was requested. Claire could choose the place and bring counsel.
Claire read the message twice, surprised by the care of it.
"Someone has finally explained appointments to her," Tessa said.
Claire chose a quiet hotel lounge and asked Mara to review anything offered before she considered signing. She went alone, leaving Noah with Tessa, but the appointment was on her terms.
Eleanor arrived five minutes early. She wore a dark blue jacket and the pearl brooch, without the driver at her elbow this time.
Neither woman offered an embrace.
"Thank you for coming," Eleanor said.
Claire sat. "What do you want to discuss?"
The server poured tea and left a small plate of cookies between them.
Eleanor folded her hands.
"My conduct at the studio was inappropriate. I shouldn't have spoken that way in front of Noah."
"You shouldn't have said those things about him anywhere."
Eleanor's fingers pressed together.
"Yes."
Claire waited.
"I have seen the recordings. I understand more now about Vivian's behavior."
"What did you understand about mine three years ago?"
Eleanor looked at her tea.
"I didn't approve of your relationship with Adrian. You know that."
"I know what you said to me. I'm asking about what you did."
"When he ended the business relationships, I didn't object."
The careful wording caught Claire's attention.
"Because you believed the video?"
Eleanor took a moment to answer.
"Because I thought the separation was best for the family."
Claire felt the old heat in her face. Even here, after everything shown publicly, Eleanor could make the destruction of her working life sound like a household arrangement.
"We'd already separated. Years before."
"Adrian hadn't entirely let it go."
"Then you could have discussed that with Adrian."
Eleanor inclined her head, stiffly conceding the point without dwelling on it.
"I can't change my decisions then. I can make a different one now."
She took a folder from her bag.
The proposed trust would pay for Noah's education and related development needs. It was separate from any agreement about paternity, support, or contact. The donor would have no power to direct Claire's choices or require a relationship with the family.
Claire didn't touch it immediately.
"Why not offer this through Adrian?"
"Because it's my provision. Not his."
"And what do you expect in return?"
"Nothing stipulated."
"That wasn't my question."
Eleanor looked at her across the tea table.
"I would like to know my grandson."
"Then don't put that inside this folder."
For a moment, the older woman's expression sharpened.
"I haven't."
"Good. Keep it outside."
Claire opened the document. She read the introductory pages without pretending to understand every clause.
Eleanor watched her.
"He should have access to the best opportunities available."
"He should have access to the opportunities that suit him. Those aren't always the most expensive ones."

"Of course."
Claire looked up. "Does it bother you that he uses my name?"
Eleanor's silence answered before she did.
"It isn't what I would have chosen."
"You didn't choose it. I did."
"I understand."
"His name is Noah Bennett. If accepting this leads to pressure about changing it, meeting people, attending dinners, or thanking your family in public, I won't proceed."
Eleanor's face remained composed, but one hand moved toward her cup and stopped.
"Have your attorney put your concerns in the terms."
Claire closed the folder.
"I will."
They drank tea that had begun to cool.
Before Claire stood, Eleanor said, "He's very like Adrian as a child. But he watches people differently."
"How?"
"Adrian watched to see whether he could win. Noah seems to watch to see whether someone needs something."
Claire picked up her bag.
"Then let him keep that. Don't teach him everything has a price."
At home, Tessa was trying to assemble a cardboard airplane with instructions Noah insisted were wrong. Claire put the folder on the counter and washed her hands.
"How was the grandmother?" Noah asked.
"Careful."
"With you?"
"More than before."
He nodded, then held up a wing. "This goes underneath. Tessa says the picture says on top."
Claire studied the picture. "The paper is upside down."
Both of them looked at it.
Tessa turned the instructions around.
"A difficult day for my reputation."
They finished the plane before discussing the folder.
When Noah went to his room, Tessa read the summary Eleanor had provided.
"That's a lot of money."
"It's a lot of future education. Not a new life for me."
"People won't make that distinction."
Claire set three mugs in the cupboard, then took one down again because it belonged with the bowls.
"I know."
"After you've just got your name back, they'll say you used the whole thing to get Blackwell money."
"Some will."
Tessa leaned against the counter. "I'm not saying they're right. I'm saying they'll do it."
"And if the terms are what she says, should I turn down something useful for Noah because strangers might invent a different story?"
Her friend said nothing.
"The award gives us a start. My pay gives us breathing room. Neither tells me what he'll need at ten, or fifteen. I can accept a resource without agreeing that they were right about me."
"I want you protected."
"So do I. That's why Mara's reading it."
Over the following week, the document went back and forth. Claire asked questions until she could explain the arrangement in ordinary words. An independent professional would handle the technical administration; Claire would direct educational choices within the agreed purpose. Eleanor would not approve expenses, select schools, or obtain contact by making payments.
The trust wouldn't erase other unresolved matters. It wouldn't purchase a release from the past.
Mara had several clauses changed. Eleanor accepted the revisions.
Claire signed only when the final document matched what she had been promised.
Before signing, she asked Mara one last question.
"Am I missing anything because I want this to be possible?"
Mara didn't dismiss the fear. She went through the remaining responsibilities once more, including the limits Claire herself would have to respect. It wasn't free money to use however she liked. It was a defined resource for Noah, with records to keep and a purpose to honor.
Claire found that easier to accept than another promise of generosity. There was work she could understand, questions she could ask, and a process that didn't require her to guess what Eleanor was feeling.
She set down the pen afterward without the relief she had expected. The decision felt ordinary, almost practical. She liked that.
Then she booked the Boston flights herself.
Noah sat beside her while she chose seats. He offered the coins from his jar for the snacks, counted them twice, and removed a button that had somehow joined the money.
"That one's not useful," he said.
"It might be if your shirt falls apart."
He considered this and put it back in the jar.
That night, Claire filed the signed papers in a new box. Beside them she placed the clinic report, the school correspondence, and the withdrawal letter from Adrian's attorneys.
Nothing in the box asked her to love anyone.
For now, she could accept what it offered.
