"Blacklisted for Three Years, I Returned with My Genius Son." Chapter 13
After the Applause
The trophy didn't fit in the suitcase.
Claire tried it diagonally, removed a pair of shoes, and tried again. Noah watched from the bed, holding the green marble against one eye.
"It can have my seat," he suggested.
"Then where will you sit?"
"Your lap."
"The car has rules about that."
He lowered the marble. "The trophy doesn't need a seat belt. It doesn't have a head."
Claire looked at the little gold figure fixed to the top.
"Debatable."
They wrapped it in a towel and put it in a shopping bag. Noah carried the empty suitcase three feet before deciding wheels were better.
By then, Claire's phone had been vibrating for two hours.
Melissa had published her statement the previous evening. She had included the complete messages supplied to Mara, explained the pressure, and admitted the unkind comments she had made herself. Lily's name didn't appear in it.
The reference to investment partners pulled Blackwell Media into a widening argument. The company's first statement denied authorizing interference with scores and announced an internal review. People immediately began comparing the statement with Adrian's words on the broadcast.
Then Ryan posted.
He didn't share a photograph of Owen's bruise. He described what his son had told him, confirmed that he was seeking appropriate help, and acknowledged Claire's warning.
I was so worried about keeping my place on a program that I failed to listen to the person asking me to check on my child. That's something I'll have to answer for to him, not to strangers online.
Claire read it while Noah searched the room for the dinosaur.
"Under the chair," she said without looking up.
"I checked."
"Check behind the leg."
A satisfied noise followed.
Her old social account had thousands of new notifications. The most recent post was still her goodbye from three years earlier: a photograph of an empty dressing room, captioned with thanks she hadn't felt and an explanation she hadn't been permitted to give.
Under it, strangers apologized.
I believed the clip. I called you names. I'm sorry.
I hope you see this. You deserved better.
Some asked why she hadn't fought harder. Others demanded details about Noah's father. A few offered advice about how quickly she should forgive him.
She closed the app.
For a moment, she considered writing something herself. Not a statement. Just an ordinary photograph, a meal or a room or Noah's shoes by the door. Then she realized she was still choosing an image for people she didn't know.
She put the phone in her bag. The new apartment would be theirs before it was anyone else's proof that they were doing well.
Tessa arrived with the car keys and a list on her phone.
"Two agencies. A family magazine. A skin-care brand. Three interview requests, one of which I deleted because they called Noah 'the miracle baby who saved his mother.'"

Claire pulled the suitcase zipper closed.
"Thank you for deleting it."
"The other offers aren't all terrible."
"Not this week."
Tessa leaned against the desk. "One interview, on your terms, could help."
"I haven't had time to understand what my terms are."
That stopped her friend.
Claire checked the bathroom one last time. Two socks hung behind the door. She folded them into the side pocket of the case.
"I need to find somewhere we can live without checking out on Monday. Noah needs a school that doesn't hand him another worksheet he's already finished. I can do those things now."
"And after that?"
"After that, I'll decide something else."
Tessa put away the list.
"Okay. But I'm keeping the decent contacts."
"Please do."
They left the hotel through the side entrance, where there were fewer people waiting with phones. Noah wore his backpack and carried the dinosaur. Claire carried the trophy.
For several weeks, every bag she packed had felt temporary. Today she was going back to the Los Angeles neighborhood where she had first found acting work, before Adrian, before the three years spent moving wherever a job and affordable room coincided.
Tessa had found a small apartment through a friend. The kitchen window faced a wall, but there were two bedrooms and a working washing machine in the building.
Noah inspected it that afternoon with great seriousness.
"Where does the trophy go?"
"Where do you think?"
He chose the low bookshelf rather than the high cabinet. Then he put the dinosaur beside it.
"He can watch it."
Claire unpacked the bowls.
That evening, Mara forwarded written confirmation that Adrian's current demands had been withdrawn. Any proposed contact would be discussed through counsel first. Nothing had been settled permanently, but the immediate pressure had stopped.
Claire read the email twice.
"Good mail?" Noah asked.
"Better mail."
He accepted the distinction and went back to building a garage from the moving boxes.
Another message came from Ethan. This time, his name appeared at the end.
Mara said you can contact me directly if you need clarification about the archive transfer. I provided the files. I won't contact you about Mr. Blackwell's personal wishes unless you request it.
Claire looked at the number. The same one that had messaged her in the hotel.
She called.
"Why didn't you tell me it was you?"
Ethan answered without pretending not to understand. "I thought you wouldn't take them."
"You thought I'd turn away footage of my own son because I didn't like the messenger?"
There was a pause.
"That was an assumption I shouldn't have made."
She watched Noah push the toy truck into its cardboard garage.
"You delivered the letters three years ago."
"Yes."
"And now you're delivering something else."
"Yes."
"I haven't forgotten the first part."
"I didn't expect you to."
Claire pressed a thumb against the edge of the counter.
"Keep anything relating to the old video. Don't decide for me what matters. Send it through Mara."
"I will."
After the call, she cooked pasta while Noah arranged his books by size. Halfway through, her phone began lighting up again. Vivian's agency had announced a suspension of appearances. A former employee was speaking to reporters. There were allegations concerning her business accounts, still unproven, and people online were treating every rumor as established fact.
Claire muted the notifications.
She knew too well what it felt like to become a collection of claims.
At dinner, Noah asked whether everyone liked them now.
Claire set down her fork.
"Some people understand more than they did."
"Because they saw the rest?"
"Yes."
He thought about that, then picked up a piece of pasta with his fingers.
"They should have watched it before."
"They should have. Use your fork."
He did.
Later, she sat on the floor of his new room while he fell asleep. There was no hotel refrigerator humming beside the bed, no call sheet for tomorrow, no need to put her shoes near the door in case someone came knocking.
Her phone lay silent in her pocket.
She had waited years for people to say she hadn't deserved it. Now they were saying it, and the years remained.
But in the next room, there were clean bowls in a cupboard she had chosen.
Tomorrow, she would buy groceries that could stay in the refrigerator longer than a weekend.
For tonight, that was enough to do.
