"Blacklisted for Three Years, I Returned with My Genius Son." Chapter 9
Eighty
The education specialist lifted his card first.
Ninety-eight.
Beside him, the second judge showed ninety-five.
Vivian waited until the host turned toward her. Then she raised her card.
Eighty.
A murmur moved through the audience. Claire looked from the number to Vivian's face, trying to find an explanation other than the obvious one.
"A very heartfelt answer," Vivian said. "But the question was about responding to dishonesty, and I felt Noah avoided that part. There's room to grow in his reasoning."
Noah looked toward the other judges. Then his eyes found Claire.
She smiled at him, small and steady. He hadn't failed at anything she had asked him to do.
The host thanked Vivian a little too quickly.
At the judges' desk, the education specialist leaned forward.
"For clarity, considering someone's motive is part of reasoning. I found that particularly strong in his answer."
Vivian nodded as though they agreed.
"Absolutely. We all encourage him in different ways."
Tessa's hand closed around Claire's wrist.
"Don't look at your phone," she whispered.
Claire hadn't reached for it.
Onstage, Noah rubbed his palms against his trousers. The host explained that the scores would be combined with the first two rounds, then moved on to the final child's question.
Claire watched her son instead. He leaned sideways to retrieve a water bottle a crew member offered him. He thanked her. He unscrewed the lid carefully, took a drink, and put it back.
Small things. He was still doing the small things.
During the commercial break, she went to him.
"Did I answer wrong?" he asked before she reached the stool.
"No."
"She said I didn't answer the question."
Claire crouched, keeping her voice low.
"You explained what you would do and why. That's an answer."
"Then why did she give me eighty?"
"I can't explain her score. I can tell you that I heard you."
He looked down at the bottle.
"I wasn't supposed to talk about the rain?"
"You can talk about something you remember."
His fingers loosened around the lid. "Your coat took two days to dry."
"It did."
"We should get a bigger umbrella."
"That's a sensible plan."
He nodded, apparently satisfied that at least one problem could be solved.
The floor manager called for parents to return to their seats. Claire asked Noah if he wanted to continue. He looked at the other children, waiting on their stools.
"Are we finished after this?"
"Nearly."
"Okay."
The final totals appeared after the break. Noah and Lily were tied for first under the round-weighting system. The host repeated the tiebreak procedure: one additional question, scored by all three judges, using the same criteria as the last round.
Vivian lifted her microphone.
"I have a lovely one for them."
Claire turned toward Rachel at the side of the stage. Rachel was already speaking urgently into her headset.
The host hesitated, then received an instruction through his earpiece.

"All right. One final question."
Vivian left the desk and approached the children. She stopped far enough away that no one could say she had violated the revised supervision arrangement.
"What makes someone a good mother?" she asked. "What kind of person deserves to be called one?"
Claire's stomach tightened.
Lily raised her hand at once. She said a good mother bought beautiful dresses, took you to the park, and remembered the kind of cake you liked.
Melissa laughed with the audience, relief showing in every part of her face.
"That's beautiful," Vivian said. "And you, Noah?"
He studied her.
"Do you want me to say my mom isn't good?"
The host lowered his cue cards.
Vivian gave a startled little laugh.
"Of course not. Why would you think that?"
Noah looked toward Claire. She didn't nod or shake her head. She wouldn't turn his answer into another instruction he had to follow.
At the edge of the stage, Ben had stopped beside the water cart. Rachel held a hand to her headset. Claire caught her eye and pointed once toward the judges' desk. Rachel nodded, acknowledging what was happening, though the question had already been asked.
Claire could get up. She could take Noah off the stool and end his participation herself. She watched him considering his answer, not frozen or reaching for her, and stayed seated. If he looked for a way out, she would give him one. For now, she would let him finish what he wanted to say.
"Because you keep asking about her doing bad things," he said.
Vivian's smile stiffened.
The education specialist moved his microphone closer. "Noah, you can tell us what you think. You don't have to guess what anyone wants."
Noah considered that.
"My mom comes when I need her," he said. "Even if she's working. She knows I don't like peas, but she keeps giving me peas."
A surprised laugh moved through the room.
Claire covered her mouth.
"She says I have to try things. She tries things too. We moved, and she got jobs she didn't like. She still made dinner."
He paused, searching for the rest.
"And when people say mean things, she doesn't say them back to me. She still talks to me nice."
Claire felt Tessa's shoulder press against hers.
Noah looked directly at Vivian again.
"She's already my good mom. You don't have to give her a number."
For a second, there was only the faint sound of equipment above the stage.
Then someone in the audience began clapping. Others joined. The host waited until the applause eased before speaking.
"Thank you, Noah. And thank you, Lily. Let's give our judges a moment."
Vivian returned to her chair without looking toward the parent seats.
Claire couldn't watch the cards this time. She watched Noah accept another sip of water, his feet swinging once before he remembered to rest them on the rung.
The host announced a highlights package while the final results were checked.
Music filled the studio. On the big screen, children ran through the market, spilled juice, struggled with puzzles, and laughed over flour-covered counters.
Noah's flea-market trade came first in his family's section. Then the fish stall. Then the model city.
Claire saw the red block in Vivian's hand.
The narrator said, "With Vivian's patient guidance, Noah learned that even the brightest little boss needs someone to show him the way."
Onscreen, her son lowered his head beside the woman who had threatened him.
Claire stood.
Tessa looked up at her, then reached for her phone.
"I'll call Mara."
Claire took the small drive from her bag and walked toward the side of the stage.
Rachel met her before the steps.
"Claire—"
"You knew I disputed this segment. You have my complaint. You were asked to correct it."
Rachel looked toward the screen, then back at her.
"I didn't approve that narration."
"Find the person who did."
Daniel came quickly from behind the curtain.
"This isn't the time."
Claire held up the drive.
"It became the time when you put it on that screen again."
His eyes dropped to her hand.
"What's that?"
"The complete task footage and the original sound recording. My attorney has already provided your legal department with a verification summary. You have a correction ready. Play it."
The highlights music continued behind them.
Daniel's smile vanished.
"We're live."
"So was the lie."
