"Blacklisted for Three Years, I Returned with My Genius Son." Chapter 5
Who Taught Him That?
At eight the next morning, Claire's phone rang while she was cutting a banana into Noah's oatmeal.
Tessa had found someone to review the contract.
"Her name's Mara Ellis. Entertainment attorney. She has never worked for Blackwell, and she doesn't owe Daniel Mercer a favor. I asked both questions twice."
"Thank you."
"She'll call at ten. Send the emails, too. She wants the sequence, not just the clip."
Claire glanced at Noah. He was moving banana slices into a circle around the bowl.
"Can you watch him while I talk to her?"
"I'm already putting my shoes on."
Tessa arrived with clean socks, a bag of groceries, and a toy dinosaur missing one arm.
"Why is he broken?" Noah asked.
"Because I stepped on him looking for your socks."
Noah inspected the damaged shoulder. "Where's the arm?"
"Somewhere under my couch."
"Then he's not broken. He's waiting."
Tessa looked at Claire over his head. "I like his management style."
They went downstairs to investigate the hotel breakfast buffet while Claire took the call.
Mara was brisk without rushing her. She asked what had happened, what Claire had witnessed herself, and what Noah had told her afterward. Claire sent the files and left the original recording untouched.
"I want to correct the public version," Claire said. "But I don't want him turned into something people watch because he's upset."
"Then we don't post in anger. I need to review the contract and the recording before advising you about disclosure. For now, keep documenting their responses. I'll ask production to preserve the source material formally."
"And if I leave?"
"We'll discuss that after I read their terms. Your immediate safety requirements don't wait for a contract review."
By noon, Rachel had confirmed that Claire could remain within sight and hearing during every segment involving Vivian. Ben would stay with Noah during transitions. If either mother or child asked to stop, filming would stop.
Claire printed the email at the hotel desk and folded it into her bag.
At the outdoor sports day, Vivian worked with Owen instead.
Noah stood beside Claire after finishing his relay leg, picking grass seeds from his sock. Across the field, Owen fumbled the baton. Vivian bent to retrieve it while another family ran between them and the main camera.
Noah stopped picking at his sock.
Claire was searching her bag for his water bottle. By the time she looked up, Owen was crying in Vivian's arms.
"He took a little tumble," Vivian called as Ryan hurried over. "I think he frightened himself."
Ryan gathered his son, thanking her breathlessly.
Noah pressed against Claire's side.
"What is it?"
He watched the cluster of adults around Owen.
"Not here," he whispered.
She led him behind the production tent, where he told her what he'd seen. Vivian had pinched the inside of Owen's arm and twisted before letting go.

Claire asked him to point to where, then stopped herself from asking more questions.
"I'm glad you told me."
"You believe me?"
"Yes."
He exhaled.
She found Rachel, reported what Noah had said, and asked her to record it without putting either child through an on-camera confrontation. Then she approached Ryan, who was packing Owen's jacket.
"Could you check his arm?" she asked quietly.
Ryan looked up. "What?"
"Noah saw something during the baton handoff. He thinks Vivian hurt him."
Ryan's expression closed.
"Claire, he fell."
"I didn't see it myself. I'm telling you what Noah told me. Please ask Owen privately."
"He's already upset. I don't want him dragged into whatever's going on between you and her."
Owen stood behind his father, staring at the ground.
Claire lowered her voice further. "Neither do I. That's why I'm speaking to you, not a camera."
She left before the conversation became something Owen would have to remember.
That evening, Noah asked whether Ryan had checked.
"I told him. He's Owen's dad. He needs to listen to Owen now."
"Owen didn't tell him on the field."
"Sometimes it's hard to say things in front of a lot of people."
Noah pulled his blanket up to his chin. "Especially if the person is still there."
Claire sat beside him until he fell asleep.
Two days later, the children were assigned fruit-drink stalls in pairs. Noah worked with Lily. Vivian was listed as their guest adviser; Claire stood six feet away, exactly where Rachel had marked a safe position outside the camera frame.
Vivian noticed her and gave a small, almost private smile.
Claire didn't return it.
Noah surveyed the ingredients. "We need two prices."
Lily looked alarmed. "Why?"
"Small cup, big cup. Some people don't want a lot."
"I want to do the money."
"Okay. I'll write the prices."
Vivian reached for the sign. "Maybe we should make everything the same price. Easier for you both."
Noah looked at the two cup sizes.
"Then everyone will take the big one."
Lily nodded with absolute conviction. "I would."
The camera operator laughed.
The children worked well together once Noah stopped trying to arrange Lily's stack of napkins. She liked greeting customers; he liked calculating how much juice to pour without running out. Halfway through, he noticed the neighboring team had cups but no lemons. Their own stall had lemons but only four cups left.
He negotiated a trade with the other children while Ben watched.
Vivian offered to squeeze the fruit for the final rush. Noah thanked her, and Claire was relieved that he could accept a useful action without having to pretend affection.
Their stall finished with the highest total.
During the wrap-up interview, Vivian rested a hand on the counter.
"We talked through the pricing strategy yesterday," she told the host. "I gave him a few little ideas, and he remembered everything. It's wonderful to see a child really listen."
Claire's fingers tightened around Noah's water bottle.
Noah looked up from the coins.
"We didn't talk yesterday."
Vivian's smile paused.
"Well, we've talked about lots of things, haven't we?"
"Not the prices. I thought of that when I saw the cups."
The host glanced toward the director.
Vivian gave a fond laugh. "And of course he wants all the credit. That's our little boss."
"Lily did the money," Noah said. "It wasn't all me."
Claire saw Lily smile.
She expected that moment to make the episode. It was warm, funny, and entirely real.
In the segment posted the following evening, it was gone.
So was Noah's denial.
Vivian described the strategy. The video cut to Noah nodding at something someone had asked him much earlier. A caption praised her natural gift for teaching.
Claire watched the false agreement take shape on her screen.
Then she put the phone facedown and helped Noah find the dinosaur's missing arm, which Tessa had finally brought over in a sandwich bag.
"He can reach things again," Noah said, fitting it into place.
"Lucky him."
After bedtime, Claire sent Mara the new clip, the time of the original exchange, and the names of the people who had been present.
An unfamiliar number messaged her just before two.
I can get you the full task footage. The city build and today's interview. Keep the originals if I send them.
Claire sat up.
Who is this?
Someone who should have checked sooner.
She looked at the sleeping child beside her, then at the screen.
Send them to my attorney, she typed. I'll give you the address. And preserve the rest.
