"Mafia Boss, Your Toddler is Here for Child Support!" Chapter 11 — TEA PARTY WITH THE DON

Six weeks later, Moretti Manor had a new security policy.

No firearms were permitted near the nursery.

No meetings were scheduled during Lily's nap.

And absolutely nobody was allowed to call Mr. Fluffington a security threat.

Dante had argued about the third rule.

He had lost.

On a bright Saturday morning, the Ghost of New York sat on a miniature chair in the mansion's rose garden wearing a pink plastic crown.

His knees were bent at an angle that no human adult should have been expected to endure.

A tiny teacup rested between his fingers.

Lily stood opposite him in a yellow dress, solemnly pouring imaginary tea from a glittering plastic pot.

"More tea, Princess?" Dante asked.

She lifted one finger.

"Only if Mr. Fluffington gets a cookie first."

Dante looked at the rabbit seated beside him.

"He already had two."

"He's growing."

"He's made of stuffing."

"Daddy. Don't be rude to guests."

Dante sighed and placed a cookie on the rabbit's plate.

"My apologies, Mr. Fluffington."

From the terrace, Luca watched with open fascination.

"If someone had told me six months ago that the boss would apologize to a stuffed rabbit—"

"You would have had them evaluated," Marcus finished.

Both men fell silent when Dante glanced toward them.

Lily waved.

"Uncle Luca! Uncle Marcus! You're late for tea!"

The two men looked at each other.

Then, with the resignation of soldiers entering an unwinnable battle, they approached the tiny table.

The garden was different now.

A sandbox stood where Dante once kept an ornamental fountain. A swing hung beneath the oldest oak. Pink flowers filled the beds near the terrace, although Dante insisted they were there because the landscape architect had recommended them.

Nobody believed him.

Inside the house, Elena Bennett stood at the kitchen counter, watching the scene through the open doors.

She was recovering well. Her doctors expected no lasting physical complications, though she still startled at unexpected noises and sometimes woke from nightmares.

Dante had offered her the master suite.

She had declined.

He had offered her a separate apartment in Manhattan.

She had declined that too.

"I don't want another arrangement made for me," she had said. "I want choices."

So he had given her choices.

She stayed in the east wing while she recovered, with her own keys, her own work space, and the freedom to leave whenever she wished. The estate's security team followed rules she helped write. Nobody monitored her phone. Nobody entered her rooms without permission.

It was the first time in Dante's adult life that protecting someone had meant learning when to step back.

Elena watched him help Lily pour imaginary tea into Luca's cup.

"He's getting better at it," she said.

Dr. Foster, visiting for a routine check, smiled. "At tea parties?"

"At listening."

The legal proceedings against Victoria Vance were moving forward. Federal investigators had charged her and several associates in connection with the abduction, unlawful confinement, financial fraud, and conspiracy. Her father faced separate charges relating to the shell companies used to fund the operation.

Dante had wanted a quicker form of justice.

Elena had stopped him.

"I spent four years being punished because powerful people thought the rules didn't apply to them," she said. "Don't make my daughter watch you become one of them."

He had listened.

The evidence from Mr. Fluffington had been preserved by independent forensic experts, and Elena had given a detailed statement. The courts would decide the sentences. The Vance family's influence no longer protected them from investigation.

For Dante, waiting was difficult.

But Lily had taught him something about patience.

Mostly by refusing to put on shoes until she had found the correct left sock.

At noon, the tea party moved indoors because Lily announced that her royal subjects needed a snack.

Dante carried the rabbit under one arm and a tray of cookies in the other.

"Daddy," Lily asked, "can Mommy have tea too?"

"Ask her."

Lily ran toward Elena.

"Mommy! Daddy has cookies! Real ones!"

Elena crouched to hug her.

"Then I suppose I should come."

Lily looked delighted.

She took Elena's hand in one of hers and Dante's in the other.

"Family meeting!"

Dante glanced at Elena.

She met his eyes.

The hurt between them had not vanished. Neither had the love. Both truths existed together, complicated and unfinished.

"One day at a time," Elena said softly.

Dante nodded. "As many as you need."

Lily tugged their hands.

"Less talking. More cookies."

They sat around the tiny table.

Luca and Marcus squeezed onto cushions nearby. Marco Russo, fully recovered from the incident with the pink wand, appeared carrying a platter of sandwiches.

Lily beamed at him.

"Big Potato!"

Marco closed his eyes.

"Please don't call me that in front of the other guards."

"Okay, Uncle Potato."

Luca choked on his tea.

Even Dante laughed.

The sound startled everyone, including Dante himself.

Later that afternoon, while Lily napped, Elena found him in his study staring at a sheet of paper.

"What's that?" she asked.

He turned it toward her.

The original invoice.

DADDY'S BILL.

Milk. Diapers. Shoes. Cookies. Emotional damages.

One billion dollars, written in crooked purple crayon.

Elena covered her mouth, laughing.

"She really gave you that?"

"In front of six armed men."

"Of course she did."

Dante opened a folder beside the bill.

"I set up a trust for her education and future care. The paperwork names you as an independent co-trustee. Nothing is conditional on where you live or what you decide about us."

Elena looked at the documents.

"You didn't have to do that."

"I did have to take responsibility," he said. "But you should have a say in how. Have your lawyer review everything."

She studied him for a long moment.

"Thank you."

He touched the silver ring on her finger. She had chosen to wear it again that morning, not as a promise that everything was repaired, but as a reminder of what they might rebuild.

"Elena, I can't undo what happened."

"I know."

"But I can spend the rest of my life making sure Lily never doubts that she's loved."

Elena's eyes softened.

"Start with being there when she wakes up. That's what she needs most."

He nodded.

From upstairs came a shout.

"DADDY!"

Dante was on his feet instantly.

He reached the nursery to find Lily sitting in bed, holding Mr. Fluffington upside down.

"Emergency!" she announced.

Dante's pulse raced. "What's wrong?"

"Bunny needs a bath."

He stared at her.

"That's the emergency?"

"He's stinky."

Dante looked at the battered rabbit. Its fur was matted. One eye was missing. Its ears had survived rain, mud, and an international criminal conspiracy.

"We'll clean him carefully," he said. "No washing the electronics."

Lily nodded seriously.

Then she threw her arms around his neck.

"Love you, Daddy."

He closed his eyes and held her.

"Love you too, Lily-Bug."

Outside the nursery, Elena watched them from the doorway.

Dante caught her gaze and smiled.

Not the cold, calculated expression the underworld feared.

A real smile.

That evening, the Moretti family gathered on the lawn for one final tea party. The sky turned gold above the gardens, and Lily placed her rabbit in the seat of honor.

"Everybody ready?" she asked.

"Ready," Dante said.

She lifted her little teacup.

"To Mommy coming home."

Elena raised hers.

"To coming home."

Dante looked at the woman he had almost lost, then at the daughter who had stormed through his defenses with a broken rabbit and an impossible bill.

"To family," he said.

Lily grinned.

"And cookies!"

The Ghost of New York laughed beneath his pink plastic crown.

And for once, nothing in Moretti Manor needed defending.
