"Mafia Boss, Your Toddler is Here for Child Support!" Chapter 2 — THE LITTLE EXTORTIONIST

“Nobody moves.”

Dante's command was quiet. That made it worse.

Six heavily armed men stood in formation around the War Room entrance. Luca positioned himself beside the table, one hand hovering near his holster.

Marcus's voice crackled over the emergency radio. “Boss, we have visual confirmation. The intruder is approximately three feet tall.”

“Armed?” Dante asked.

A pause. “With a rabbit, sir.”

Dante closed his eyes. For one brief moment, he considered firing his entire security department.

Then the doors opened.

A little girl stepped inside. She was very small. Very wet. And very clearly unimpressed.

Her yellow raincoat reached almost to her knees. Pink rubber boots squeaked with every step. A tiny purple backpack hung from her shoulders. Under one arm, she carried a gray stuffed rabbit missing one eye.

She stopped at the threshold. Looked at the guns. Looked at the men. Then frowned.

“That's rude.”

Nobody spoke.

She pointed at Luca. “Mommy says you shouldn't point things at people.”

Luca slowly lowered his weapon.

The child nodded approvingly. “Good boy.”

A choking sound came from one of the guards.

Dante turned his head. The guard immediately straightened.

The little girl resumed walking.

Squeak. Squeak. Squeak.

Each step left a muddy pink footprint on the immaculate black marble floor.

Dante watched the prints appear. His right eye twitched. One. Two. Three. Four.

The child reached the conference table and looked up. It was a very tall table. She was a very short person.

After considering the problem, she dragged an expensive leather chair across the floor. The screech made Dante's teeth hurt.

She climbed onto it. Stood. And placed both hands on her hips.

“Are you Dante Moretti?”

Dante stared at her. “Who wants to know?”

She narrowed her eyes. “That's not how questions work.”

Luca coughed into his fist.

Dante slowly turned toward him. Luca looked at the ceiling.

The child reached into her backpack. Every guard stiffened.

“Hands where we can see them!” one shouted.

She glared at him. “I'm getting my paperwork!”

She rummaged through the bag, producing a half-eaten cracker, two crayons, a small plastic dinosaur, and a pink sock. Finally, she pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

It was decorated with purple hearts and an alarming number of dollar signs.

She slapped it onto Dante's desk.

SMACK.

“You owe Mommy three years of milk money. Pay up, mister.”

Absolute silence.

Dante looked down. The paper was a handwritten invoice. At the top, in enormous crooked letters, someone had written:

DADDY'S BILL

Below it was a list. Milk. Diapers. Shoes. Cookies. Doctor visits. Emotional damages.

Dante's gaze paused on the last item. “Emotional damages?”

The girl nodded gravely. “Mommy cried.”

Something cold passed through the room.

Dante looked at her again. “What did you say?”

“Mommy cried because you were gone.”

Her voice was smaller now. Not frightened. Just matter-of-fact. As though she were describing rain.

Dante's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

“Who is your mother?”

The girl lifted her chin. “Elena.”

The name struck him like a bullet. He did not breathe.

Luca's expression changed instantly. Elena. Only a handful of people inside the Moretti organization knew that name.

Dante leaned forward. “Elena what?”

“Elena Bennett.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Dante remembered a woman with laughing brown eyes, ink-stained fingers, and an infuriating habit of stealing his coffee. Elena Bennett. A brilliant cybersecurity specialist who had entered his life as a consultant and somehow dismantled every emotional defense he possessed.

She had disappeared after being accused of selling Moretti intelligence to a rival organization. He had searched for her. For months. Then the trail had gone cold.

Dante's voice dropped. “Where is she?”

The girl hugged her rabbit. “That's complicated.”

“Where is Elena?”

“You're being bossy.”

“Damn it, child—”

She gasped. “Bad word!”

Luca turned away. His shoulders shook.

Dante ignored him. “Tell me where your mother is.”

The little girl studied his face. For the first time, her expression changed. Her enormous dark eyes moved from his mouth to his eyebrows, then to the tight muscles along his jaw.

She looked almost disappointed. “You're sad.”

Dante went still. “What?”

“You look angry. But your eyes are sad.”

Nobody in that room had ever spoken to Dante Moretti like that. Nobody who wanted to survive.

He lowered the pistol onto the table. “What's your name?”

“Lily.”

“Lily what?”

She straightened proudly. “Lily-Bug Moretti.”

Luca's head snapped around. Marcus's radio went silent.

Dante stared at the child. “Moretti?”

She nodded. “That's my last name.”

“Who gave you that name?”

“Mommy.”

“Why?”

Lily looked at him as though he had asked why water was wet. “Because you're my daddy.”

A heavy silence descended. Outside, thunder rolled across the estate.

Dante slowly stood. “No.”

Lily blinked. “No?”

“No.”

She frowned. “That's a bad answer.”

“You have been misinformed.”

“That's a big word.”

“I am not your father.”

Lily's lower lip trembled. Only for a second. Then she straightened her shoulders.

“Mommy said you'd say that.”

Dante felt something twist painfully beneath his ribs. “What else did she say?”

Lily looked down at Mr. Fluffington. “She said you might be scared.”

A guard made a strangled sound. Scared. Dante Moretti. The man who had made entire criminal organizations abandon New York.

Lily continued. “She said grown-ups get scared when they find out they did something really, really wrong.”

Dante's face hardened. “Enough.”

He looked at Luca. “Find out who brought this child here. Check the gates, roads, cameras, everything.”

“Yes, boss.”

“And contact every hospital and missing-person database associated with Elena Bennett.”

Lily raised her hand. Dante ignored her. She waved harder.

“Excuse me!”

“What?”

“You're forgetting the bill.”

Dante stared at her. She tapped the paper. “You have to pay.”

“How much?”

Lily smiled. A triumphant, gap-toothed smile.

“One million dollars.”

Luca made a noise resembling a dying engine.

Dante looked at the invoice. The actual total, written in purple crayon, was $1,000,000,000.

“That says one billion.”

Lily leaned forward. Squinted. Then shrugged.

“Interest.”

For the first time in years, Dante Moretti was genuinely speechless.

Lily picked up her rabbit and kissed its remaining eye.

“Don't worry, Mr. Fluffington,” she whispered loudly. “We found the rich one.”

Dante pressed two fingers against his temple.

Then he noticed something. The rabbit's eye had flashed. A tiny red light. The same red light described by the guard at the gate.

His expression sharpened. “Lily.”

“Yes, Mr. Daddy?”

“Where did you get that rabbit?”

She hugged it tighter. “Mommy made him special.”

“What does he do?”

Lily smiled. “Magic.”

Dante extended his hand. “Give it to me.”

Her smile vanished. “No.”

“Lily.”

“Nope.”

He leaned closer. “That is not a toy.”

She tilted her head. “Neither is your shiny gun.”

Dante froze.

Then Lily whispered something that made every armed man in the room look toward the ceiling.

“Mr. Fluffington says there are bad people listening.”

And somewhere inside the supposedly dead security system, a hidden microphone clicked on.
