"She Burned My Soul. Now the Shadow Queen Begs Me to Stay." Chapter 14
The Throne That Belonged to Me
The ninth seal opened without pain.
For so long, strength had arrived through hunger, injury, or someone else's hand forcing a path inside me. This time, I chose it, and the power answered.
Nine white tails unfolded behind my human shape, vast enough to sweep the broken pillars. The hall's restraints fell apart. Beyond the ruined ceiling, the sky changed from white to blue.
The eye tried to close the world around me again.
I raised the sword.
Seraphine's power moved along my arm, waiting for direction. I felt her there, not pressing, not pulling, simply present beneath my hand.
"With me," I said.
The blade warmed.
I stepped into the air.
Below, Aurelia lifted her head. Courtiers crawled away from the falling stone. Beyond the outer gate, dragon soldiers held the bridge clear while servants fled toward the lower terraces.
The eye released a blade of white law large enough to cut the palace from its foundations.
I met it above the roof.
Foxfire burned along the black and white edge. The borrowed authority broke where my sword touched it. Under the brilliant surface, I could see threads stolen from forests, seas, and souls bound unwillingly to the damaged register.
I cut those threads free.
The eye screamed.
"I am the order that preserves you."
"You preserved the throne," I said. "You fed it with everyone else."
I drove the sword into its center.
For a moment, I stood inside its light. I saw Lucien's face, Alaric's crown, a thousand chosen people taught that others existed to carry them higher.
Then I saw the sleeping guardian beneath the corruption, nearly consumed but not gone.
I turned the blade away from it and cut around the parasite.
Seraphine followed the movement precisely.
The false presence tore loose.
I burned it in the air between worlds until its voice stopped.
Gold rain fell over the palace. It moved outward through the realms, returning stolen magic to riverbeds, exhausted groves, and bloodlines weakened by generations of tribute.
The old register unfolded before me, no longer a crown, but a network of living bonds.
I accepted its authority.
I did not accept its right to own those lives.
The Wayfarer spoke quietly.
"Your soul is recognized by the realm. No extraction is required. No foreign judgment can erase you."
For the first time since waking in another world, I had nowhere I needed to escape to.
I descended onto the broken floor.
Seraphine's figure appeared beside the sword, kneeling where the light caught its edge. She looked at me as though waiting would be enough if she did it forever.
I turned first toward Aurelia.
She had survived. A healer wrapped her ruined shoulder while another examined the broken horn visible through her hair.
"The reef," I said.
Her breath caught.
"What about it?"
I placed my hand on the floor and followed the tide channels down through the realm. The blight came from centuries of diverted power, not from some unavoidable hunger that required a husband to feed it.

I returned what the pillars had taken.
Far below, the sea brightened.
Aurelia covered her mouth with her uninjured hand.
"Thank you."
"Your people shouldn't pay for the choices made here."
She bowed her head.
Through the register, another thread touched me: two crushed sprigs of soulwort, preserved in a life I thought had ended.
I followed it.
A little clinic stood in a village far from the old sanctuary. Mara sat at a table, showing three apprentices how to separate a medicinal root from a poisonous one. Her hair was braided back. There were scars on her hands, but those hands moved steadily.
I stopped breathing for a moment.
Seraphine's voice came from the sword.
"I sent people after her. Lucien's guards broke her channels and threw her into the gorge. They found her before her soul dispersed."
I looked at the woman beside the blade.
"You let me believe she was dead."
"Yes. I feared he would finish the work if he knew she survived. I should have found a way to tell you."
The old anger remained. So did relief, enormous and unexpected.
Mara laughed at something an apprentice said. She looked toward the open window, smiling at the afternoon light.
I could have brought her to me.
Instead, I steadied the clinic's failing well and left her life where she had built it.
She had once protected me without asking for anything. I would not repay that by dragging her into another court.
In the days that followed, the shattered hall was cleared. A new seat formed above the roots of the register, plain pale stone rather than stolen gold.
The courts assembled before it.
Aurelia came bearing the Tide Kingdom's seal. She knelt at the foot of the steps, her broken horn uncovered.
"The four seas offer their allegiance," she said. "And I offer my service."
I accepted the seal and returned it to her hand.
"You will guard the sea roads and govern your people. The ancestral currents belong to them, not to this throne."
She looked up, hope moving beneath her composure.
"And the bond we discussed?"
"Will not be made."
Her fingers closed around the seal.
"I understand."
"I believe you cared for me. I also know what you concealed. Both can be true. Neither requires me to marry you."
She bowed until her forehead touched the step.
When she rose, she did not reach for my hand.
Seraphine appeared beside the sword at my waist. The gathered courts went still at the sight of the queen who had broken their defenses now kneeling below my chair.
"Let me remain," she said.
"You already are here."
"You know what I mean."
I did.
She wanted the small house inside her sanctuary. She wanted my hands on her wounded skin, my voice complaining about burned potatoes, a hundredth jar opened between us.
I remembered wanting those things too.

"I won't be your lover again," I said.
She closed her eyes. When she opened them, the hope had not vanished. It had become something she was trying not to place on me.
"Then let me serve."
"You cannot kill anyone who displeases me. You cannot enter my dreams. You cannot use a danger to decide what I am allowed to do."
"Yes."
I placed a sovereign seal within the sword. It limited her manifestation and bound its movements to my command. It was not a wound. It was a door she would no longer be able to open from the other side.
Her figure began fading.
"Evander," she said softly.
I waited.
"Did any of it matter? Before I ruined it?"
I looked at her face, familiar down to the last small scar.
"All of it. That's why it hurt."
She bowed her head and disappeared into the blade.
That evening, I placed the repaired doll in a cabinet and left the vest folded beside it. I kept the wine unopened. Keeping the past did not require living inside it.
At dawn, I stood before the gathered courts.
I abolished the familiar ownership marks. I ended compulsory soul offerings. I ordered the opened channels protected so no future throne could quietly drain them again.
Then a councilor asked whether the realm should begin preparing for a royal marriage.
"No," I said.
The word carried through the hall without explanation.
I took my seat. The sword rested at my side, silent beneath its seal. Beyond the windows, the world moved freely in the morning light.
Once, I had given someone half my life because I thought love meant leaving nothing for myself.
Now I held the whole of it.
There would be no queen beside my throne.
There would be no master above it.
And when I rose to walk through my own world, no one would decide whether I was permitted to leave.
