"She Burned My Soul. Now the Shadow Queen Begs Me to Stay." Chapter 8
A Stranger Who Knew My Face
I caught the vest before it struck the floor.
For a moment, I could not move. The name continued sounding inside me, not as language but as pressure against a sealed door.
Aurelia touched my arm.
"Stay here. I'll send a healer."
"I'm not ill."
"You're very pale."
"It's been an eventful journey."
She looked toward the guards hurrying down the corridor.
"The prison reef contains the old sea blight. If it breaches, the inner city floods with it. I need to go."
"Then I'll come."
I did not know whether I wanted to help or see the woman whose name had struck me. Either reason made me uneasy.
We passed nine gates. Beyond the last, black water battered a wall of light above a deep ravine.
A woman stood at the center of the ward, one hand on a plain black sword.
Her dark hair floated around her shoulders. She wore a swordswoman's coat rather than armor, and blood ran down the hand gripping the hilt.
I recognized her before she turned.
Not her face. The way she held herself. The cold scent of her power. The particular stillness that preceded her movements in my dreams.
I stopped so abruptly that Aurelia looked back.
The woman turned.
She was beautiful in a way I did not want to notice: sharp mouth, pale face, dark eyes that seemed made to look down on people. Those eyes found me and lost every trace of composure.
"Evander."
The ward shuddered.
"Warden," Aurelia snapped. "The western anchor."
The woman drove her sword deeper. Black water folded inward, forced into the ravine by a pressure I could feel in my teeth.
Aurelia added her spear to the nearest anchor. I sent foxfire along a broken line in the stone. The light steadied.
When the danger passed, the woman pulled her blade free.
She walked toward me as though the entire chamber had become the distance between us.
I stepped back.
She stopped.
"You don't remember me."
It was not quite a question.
"Should I?"
Her eyes moved over my face, then my hands, then the mark beneath my collar. Hunger and grief crossed her expression so plainly that I wished she had hidden them.
"I hoped the seal might have loosened."
"What seal?"
She swallowed.
"I'm Seraphine."
The pressure behind my forehead sharpened.
"Your Seraphine."
Marble flashed beneath me.
A hand held my soul above a burning fox. A voice said there was nothing to bear.
I could not breathe.
Seraphine reached for me.
I drew my blade and cut her hand.
Blood opened across her knuckles. She stared at it as though surprised by how little it mattered.
"Don't touch me."
She lowered the wounded hand.
"All right."
Aurelia stepped between us.
"You know him?"
Seraphine did not look at her.
"Yes."
"Then explain what you just did."

"I said my name."
"And nearly brought him to his knees."
I straightened because I disliked them discussing my weakness more than I disliked the pain.
"I'm leaving this chamber. Neither of you needs to carry me."
Aurelia moved aside immediately.
Seraphine's gaze followed me to the door. I felt it between my shoulders until the ninth gate closed.
In my assigned rooms, I washed the blade. Her blood thinned in the basin and vanished through the drain.
My hands shook afterward.
I had defended myself. That should have felt simple.
Instead, I kept remembering how she had offered the wounded hand rather than draw it away.
The Wayfarer gave no answer when I called.
Aurelia returned with a cup of warm broth and no healer.
"You said you weren't ill," she explained.
I accepted the cup.
"Thank you."
She sat across from me, leaving space between our chairs.
"That woman isn't an ordinary warden. My mother thought we had recruited a wandering sword master. I don't think she understood what she invited inside."
"She's the woman from my dreams."
Aurelia's expression hardened.
"Then our walls may not be enough."
I looked at the sealed windows.
"You said your wards had survived worse things."
"I believed it. I won't pretend certainty now."
That honesty made the next offer more difficult to dismiss.
The Tide Festival would begin in three days. Every court would send witnesses. If we declared a marriage bond before them, the ancestral dragons would place their protection around my soul.
"No bed is required," she said. "No affection you cannot give. A public bond, and time for you to become strong enough to need neither it nor me."
"And what do you gain?"
"An alliance with the White Fox Court. A husband whose power might one day equal mine."
"That's a surprisingly tidy answer."
"Politics rarely improves when people pretend it's poetry."
I almost smiled.
She looked pleased, then careful again.
"Think about it. I won't announce anything without your agreement."
After she left, I unwrapped the old doll.
Its painted smile seemed unbearable. I turned it face down, then turned it back because that felt cruel to an object.
"You have excellent judgment," I told it. "Clearly better than mine."
The room grew cold.
Pearls set into the walls dimmed to green. Frost traveled along the window frames, and the door's lock clicked without opening.
Black mist rose beside the bed.
Seraphine stepped out of it wearing a dark gown worked with silver branches. A crown rested above her hair, narrow as a blade. Shadows bent toward her feet.
There was no longer any possibility of mistaking her for a hired warden.
The Shadow Queen stood in the sanctuary meant to keep her out.
She looked at the doll in my hand.
Then at the untouched second cup on the table.
"Is it true?" she asked.
"Get out."
"Are you going to marry her?"
I rose, my blade in my hand.
"You don't get to ask that question."
Her eyes lifted to mine, stripped of their earlier restraint.
"I've been asking where you are for five hundred years," she said. "I didn't cross all that darkness to find you choosing someone else."
