"She Burned My Soul. Now the Shadow Queen Begs Me to Stay." Chapter 7
Everything She Put Back Together
They gave me rooms overlooking a garden I did not recognize.
The king called them my childhood chambers. I did not correct him. The man whose body I wore might have remembered the little fountain or the foxes carved into the bedposts. To me, they were strangers arranged as evidence of belonging.
A servant brought clothes. Another asked whether I preferred honey in my tea.
No one asked where I had spent five hundred years.
At supper, the king spoke of the Shadow Queen's raids. Aurelia sat beside me, listening while his advisers argued over defenses.
"The ancestral wards should have held," one said.
"They did hold," Aurelia replied. "Against an army. They were not built to resist a sovereign."
The king's gaze moved toward me.
"Then we require a sovereign alliance."
I set down my cup.
"You have a proposal."
He smiled as though my bluntness delighted him.
"The Tide Kingdom has stood beside our court for centuries. A marriage could join our protections."
Aurelia looked at me before she answered.
"I would be willing."
I had expected a cousin, an absent niece, someone whose name would arrive with a treaty. The princess herself was another matter.
"You met me this afternoon."
"And saw you refuse capture without harming the soldiers who pursued you. That tells me something."
"It tells you I couldn't kill them."
Her mouth curved.
"It also tells me you don't flatter yourself."
The king began discussing the alliance as though I had accepted.
"I haven't agreed," I said.
Silence settled over the table.
Aurelia lifted her glass. "Then let us give him time."
I liked her for that. I distrusted how quickly I liked it.
Later, she joined me in the garden without guards.
"You look as though you're searching for exits," she said.
"I found three."
"There are four. Behind the fountain."
I looked at her.
"Why tell me?"
"I'd rather you stay because the door is open."
The words should have comforted me. Instead, something hurt beneath my ribs.
She noticed but did not ask.
We sat beside the water. She told me about the Tide Kingdom's libraries, its healing springs, the chambers beneath the sea where no shadow could cross without permission.
I asked whether that included a queen's shadow.
"Our deepest wards were laid by the first dragons," she said. "They have survived worse things than a throne changing hands."
Before I could reply, thunder broke over the garden.
The ancestral barrier split.
Aurelia stood, spear in hand. Guards poured through the doors, and the king arrived with his crown crooked on his head.
One figure descended through the opening: an armored envoy carrying a tray beneath black cloth.
"A gift for Evander Vale," the envoy announced.
"We accept nothing from your queen," the king said.
The envoy looked at me.
"The gift already belongs to him."

My chest tightened before the cloth moved.
On the tray lay a leather vest.
Its stitching wandered along the edges. Some patches were different colors, carefully matched to old damage rather than replaced. Beside it stood ninety-nine little jars, each sealed with pale wax.
A wooden doll rested against the first jar. Its waist bore a thin seam where it had been joined together.
I reached for the vest.
My hand stopped short.
A picture flashed behind my eyes: a woman sitting on a bed, turning awkwardly while someone tugged stitches through leather. Her voice complained that the needle had caught her shirt. A man's laugh answered.
Mine.
The garden lurched.
Aurelia caught my elbow.
"What have you done to him?"
"Nothing," the envoy said. "He knows these things."
"I don't."
The words came out harshly.
I took the doll. There was a scowl beneath the painted smile, barely visible through the worn color.
I knew where to look before I saw it.
Pain opened behind my forehead.
"Who made this?"
The envoy's expression shifted. For a moment, he looked less like a soldier than a man who had witnessed something he could not forget.
"You did. Both of you."
"Who is both?"
"Her Majesty gathered the pieces herself. Some had fallen through the broken passage. Others survived in ash and stone. She spent centuries finding what remained."
The king ordered his guards forward.
The envoy ignored them.
"She asked me to say this exactly: your things have come home. When will you?"
I stared at the jars.
A scent rose through the wax: late apples, wild thyme, winter smoke. My mouth remembered a taste my mind could not place.
"I have no home with her."
The envoy bowed his head.
"She feared you would say that."
Aurelia's spear passed through his throat.
Black mist spilled instead of blood. The figure collapsed into it, leaving the tray untouched.
"A projection," she said, displeased.
The king wanted the gifts destroyed. I lifted the tray before a guard could approach.
"They're mine."
I did not know why I was certain. I was certain anyway.
That night, I spread the vest across the bed and counted every uneven stitch. Something in me wanted to cry. Something stronger refused to give a stranger that power.
I wrapped the objects in clean linen.
When Aurelia returned, I was ready to leave.
"Not a marriage agreement," I told her. "Only sanctuary."
"Only sanctuary," she agreed.
We departed before dawn in a vessel carved from living driftwood. It descended through the sea without taking on water, passing shoals bright as scattered coins.
At the bottom waited a palace of pale stone and coral.
I carried the gifts myself.
As we crossed its gates, a bell rang from somewhere deep beneath the palace. Guards ran past us toward a dark corridor.
"The prison reef," one gasped. "The new sword warden is holding it, but the seal is failing."
Aurelia seized her spear.
"Who?"
"The woman your mother appointed three days ago. Seraphine Veyra."
The name meant nothing to me.
The vest slipped from my fingers anyway.
I bent to retrieve it, suddenly unwilling to let a servant touch the worn leather. Its weight was slight. Carrying it felt strangely difficult.
