"The Maid Slapped the Mafia Boss—Then He Fell to His Knees" Chapter 4 — The Truth Behind the Ashford Fire
Vincent looked up at the security camera.
"Michael."
His voice was calm, but Elena could hear the anger beneath it.
He pressed the intercom button on his phone.
"Get to the archive room. Now."
Elena remained beside the desk.
"Who has access to that camera?"
"Security."
"Only security?"
"And a few senior household administrators."
"Richard?"
Vincent's silence answered her.
Michael arrived less than two minutes later.
Vincent showed him the message.
"Find out who accessed this feed tonight."
Michael examined the photograph.
"That's the archive camera."
"I know."
"The monitoring system is connected to the estate's private network."
"Then check the access logs."
Michael nodded.
Vincent turned toward Elena.
"We're leaving."
"Where?"
"Somewhere we can examine these records without someone watching us."
She folded her arms.
"I'm not getting into a car with you without knowing where we're going."
Vincent almost smiled.
Almost.
"Romano Holdings. West Loop office. Michael will drive. You can sit wherever you like."
Elena considered refusing.
But the forged document lay on the desk between them.
She had spent years searching for something like it.
And she was finally close.
"Fine."
Vincent looked at Michael.
"Make copies of everything in this folder. Secure the originals."
"Yes, sir."
They left the estate through a private garage.
Chicago was quiet beneath the midnight sky.
Streetlights reflected off the wet pavement as their SUV traveled toward the West Loop.
Elena sat in the back seat, leaving an empty space between herself and Vincent.
He noticed.
He said nothing.
After several minutes, she spoke.
"Did you ever visit the warehouse after the fire?"
Vincent looked toward her.
"Once."
"When?"
"About six months later."
"What did you find?"
"Nothing. The building had been demolished."
Elena turned toward the window.
"My father loved that place."
Vincent frowned.
"Why?"
"He liked fixing things. Machines, engines, broken furniture. He said anything could be repaired if someone cared enough to understand what was wrong."
Her voice softened.
"He used to bring me there on Saturdays when the warehouse was closed."
Vincent remembered the building.
The long rows of shelving.
The loading docks.
The smell of machine oil.
"I didn't know children were ever allowed inside."
"They weren't. Dad would let me sit in the maintenance office while he finished paperwork."
Elena paused.
"That night, he called my mother and said he needed to stay late. I begged her to take me there because I'd left my school project in his office."
Vincent turned fully toward her.
"You were there because of a school project?"
She nodded.
"A cardboard model of the Chicago skyline."
He stared at her.
For fifteen years, he had imagined that the little girl who saved him had somehow entered the building to rescue people.
He had never known she was simply a child looking for something she had made.
"When the fire started," Elena continued, "Dad told me to run."
Her voice became unsteady.
"I got outside. Then I heard someone shouting from inside."
Vincent closed his eyes.
He remembered shouting.
He remembered believing nobody would hear him.
"I went back," Elena whispered.
"You shouldn't have."
"I know."
"You could have died."
She turned toward him.
"So could you."
Their eyes met.
Neither spoke again until the SUV stopped.
Romano Holdings occupied several floors of a restored brick building in the West Loop.
Michael escorted them through a private entrance.
Vincent led Elena into a conference room.
Within minutes, he had opened the company's digital archives.
Elena sat beside him as they searched through records from fifteen years earlier.
Warehouse expenses.
Safety inspections.
Insurance claims.
Internal correspondence.
The first hour produced little.
The second produced a contradiction.
Vincent opened an equipment invoice.
"Look at this."
Elena leaned closer.
The invoice showed a major fire suppression system repair completed six days before the warehouse burned.
"That's impossible," she said.
"Why?"
"My father told my mother the sprinklers weren't working."
Vincent examined the contractor information.
"The company was paid ninety-eight thousand dollars."
"Did they actually do the work?"
Vincent opened another record.
The contractor had dissolved three months after the fire.
Its registered address belonged to a vacant storefront.
Elena stared at the screen.
"A fake company?"
"Possibly."
He searched the payment authorization.
Richard Romano's name appeared.
Again.
Elena felt a surge of anger.
"How many times does his name have to appear before you admit what he did?"
Vincent looked at her.
"I think my uncle is hiding something. But I won't accuse him of murder until I can prove it."
"He's had fifteen years to destroy the evidence."
"Then we'll find what he missed."
The certainty in his voice surprised her.
She studied him.
"Why are you doing this?"
Vincent leaned back.
"Because your father tried to stop a disaster. Because you saved my life. And because someone used my family name to bury what happened."
Elena looked down.
"And what if the truth destroys your family?"
Vincent's expression changed.
"Then maybe it deserves to be destroyed."
She had not expected that answer.
For a moment, the distance between them seemed smaller.
Then Michael entered.
"Sir, we've traced the archive camera access."
Vincent stood.
"Who?"
"The feed was accessed through an administrator account assigned to the estate's executive office."
"Richard?"
"The account was created under his authority."
Elena crossed her arms.
"So he was watching."
Michael hesitated.
"There's more. Someone deleted the last six hours of security footage."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
"Can we recover it?"
"Our technicians are trying."
Michael placed a folder on the table.
"I also located the original warehouse property records."
Vincent opened it.
The documents included a map of Ashford Warehouse.
Elena leaned forward.
She recognized the loading area.
The maintenance office.
The emergency exits.
Then she noticed something strange.
"Wait."
Vincent looked at her.
"What?"
She pointed to a room near the rear of the building.
"That room wasn't there."
Michael examined the map.
"It was added during a renovation."
"When?" Vincent asked.
Michael checked the accompanying paperwork.
"Three weeks before the fire."
Elena frowned.
"My father never mentioned a renovation."
Vincent read the room designation.
Private Records Storage.
He turned to Michael.
"What was stored there?"
"We don't have an inventory."
"Find one."
Michael left to make calls.
Elena continued examining the map.
A red line marked an electrical supply route leading directly to the new storage room.
Her father had warned about unauthorized electrical modifications.
The pieces were beginning to fit.
Someone had added a private storage room.
Someone had approved suspicious electrical work.
Someone had paid a fake contractor for repairs that might never have happened.
And someone had forged Daniel Brooks's signature.
Vincent opened the insurance claim.
His expression darkened.
"The fire destroyed all records stored in that room."
Elena looked up.
"All of them?"
"That's what the report says."
"Then maybe the fire wasn't meant to destroy the warehouse."
Vincent met her eyes.
"Maybe it was meant to destroy what was inside."
A long silence followed.
Elena thought of her father.
Had he discovered the contents of that room?
Was that why he wanted the warehouse shut down?
Her phone vibrated.
She flinched.
But it was only an unknown number calling.
She declined the call.
A second later, a voicemail notification appeared.
Vincent noticed her expression.
"What is it?"
Elena pressed play.
An elderly man's voice filled the room.
"Elena Brooks? My name is Thomas Reed. I worked for the Romano family fifteen years ago."
She froze.
"I knew your father."
Vincent leaned closer.
The voice continued.
"Daniel wasn't responsible for the fire. I've kept something all these years. Something he asked me to protect."
The recording crackled.
"I can't explain over the phone. Meet me tomorrow. Come alone."
Then the message ended.
Elena stared at her phone.
Vincent looked at her.
"Do you know him?"
"No."
"Don't meet him alone."
"He knew my father."
"That doesn't mean he's safe."
Elena stood.
"I'm not going to ignore the first person in fifteen years who says my father was innocent."
Vincent rose as well.
"Then let me help."
She looked at him for a long moment.
"You really want to help?"
"Yes."
"Then stop trying to make every decision for me."
Vincent exhaled.
"Fair."
She was surprised by his answer.
He continued.
"We'll decide together."
Before Elena could respond, Michael returned.
His face was grim.
"Sir, something just arrived."
He handed Vincent a sealed envelope.
"No return address. A courier left it downstairs."
Vincent opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A grainy image taken outside Ashford Warehouse on the night of the fire.
Daniel Brooks stood beside a loading dock.
Across from him was a man wearing a dark overcoat.
His face was hidden in shadow.
Elena took the photograph with trembling fingers.
"That's my father."
Vincent turned it over.
Five words had been written on the back.
YOUR FATHER WASN'T THE TARGET.
Elena read them twice.
Then she looked at Vincent.
"If my father wasn't the target..."
Her voice faded.
Vincent stared at the photograph.
Fifteen years earlier, he had been trapped inside that building.
He had survived only because a twelve-year-old girl had refused to leave him behind.
A terrible possibility began to form.
He looked at Elena.
"What if the fire was meant to kill me?"
At that moment, his phone rang.
The caller ID showed a familiar name.
Richard Romano.
Vincent answered.
His uncle spoke before he could say a word.
"Vincent, I heard you've been digging into Ashford."
Vincent looked at Elena.
Richard's voice grew colder.
"There's something you need to understand about that girl."
Vincent remained silent.
Then Richard said:
"Her father didn't die trying to save the warehouse."
A pause.
"He died because he knew who was supposed to burn inside it."
The line went dead.
