"My Stepson Bought Me a Mansion. His Birth Mother Was Furious." Chapter 7
The Letter She Held Hostage
The acceptance arrived on a Wednesday.
Daniel read the email twice before calling me. I was trying to coax Sophie into swallowing mashed peas, and at first all I understood was that something had happened at school.
“Is he okay?”
“He's in, Em. Westbridge accepted him.”
I set the spoon down.
Sophie grabbed it and smeared peas across her forehead.
“Oh, that's wonderful.”
Daniel laughed, breathless with pride.
“They want the enrollment paperwork next week.”
That Friday, Noah came home with a printed copy in a clear folder. He handed it to me without saying anything.
I read his name at the top, then looked at him.
“You did it.”
His smile spread slowly, as though he was afraid to use all of it.
“I did.”
I hugged him with Sophie balanced against my other shoulder. She seized his hair. He laughed and carefully freed himself.
“I got you something,” Daniel said.
Noah looked alarmed until his father produced a cake from the refrigerator.
The bakery had written CONGRATULATIONS, NOAH in uneven blue icing.
“They ran out of the good icing,” Daniel explained.
“It's fine.”
“You're allowed to make fun of it.”
Noah studied the crooked letters.
“Did you do this yourself?”
“No.”
“That's what I'd say too.”
We ate cake before dinner. Sophie got none and objected loudly.
Westbridge was close enough for Noah to live with us during the week if the arrangements allowed it. He could leave the residential program and attend a school that offered the advanced classes he'd wanted.
Daniel was already talking about buses and morning traffic.
I told him to let the boy finish his cake.
For two days, we allowed ourselves to enjoy it.
Then Vanessa called.
Daniel answered in the living room while Noah and I were clearing the table. I saw his expression change and knew before he said anything.
“What do you mean, you won't complete the forms?”
Noah put down the plate he was carrying.
Vanessa's voice was audible even without speakerphone.
“You're making plans without me. You don't get to move him into your new family and leave me paying for everything else.”
Daniel looked toward us.
“We've been paying his school expenses. What else are you talking about?”
“The reduced support was supposed to be temporary.”
“It was addressed through the agreement. You signed it.”
“Because you pressured me.”
He shut his eyes briefly.
“Noah's enrollment is separate from this.”
“Then you can afford to restore the extra payments. If you're so concerned about his education, it shouldn't be a problem.”
Noah had gone pale.
Daniel stepped into the kitchen. The argument continued behind the half-closed door.
I turned off the faucet.
“Come sit down.”
Noah shook his head.
“She's going to keep doing it.”
“Your dad will talk to the school and his attorney.”
“He shouldn't have to.”
He pulled the clear folder from his backpack and stared at the letter inside.

“I can stay where I am. My teachers are good. It isn't like I have to go to Westbridge.”
“Wanting to go matters.”
“Not that much.”
But his fingers were trembling.
Daniel returned, still holding the phone. He hadn't ended the call; Vanessa was talking while he stood in the doorway.
Noah lifted his head.
“Dad, don't give them anything. I'll stay at my school.”
“No,” Daniel said.
“No,” I said at the same time.
Noah looked between us.
“It's not worth fighting over.”
Daniel spoke into the phone.
“I'll contact you through the proper channels. I'm not negotiating his enrollment like this.”
He ended the call.
“You worked for that place,” he told his son. “We aren't throwing it away to avoid an unpleasant conversation.”
“She'll just ask for something else.”
“Then we'll deal with that too.”
Noah's face crumpled, and he turned away before either of us could touch him.
I understood then that he wasn't only afraid of losing a school.
He was ashamed to be the reason we fought. He could imagine giving up a future more easily than he could imagine being worth the inconvenience.
Daniel sat beside him.
“This isn't because you applied,” he said. “You did exactly what you were supposed to do.”
“I know.”
“Look at me.”
Noah did, reluctantly.
“I'm proud of you. That doesn't disappear because your mom is angry.”
The boy wiped his face with his sleeve.
Sophie began crying upstairs. For once, Noah didn't immediately rise to get her.
I did.
When I came back with the baby, father and son were still sitting together. The letter lay on the table between them.
I sat across from Noah.
“There's something we haven't asked you clearly.”
Daniel looked at me.
“What?” Noah asked.
“Whether you want this to be your main home.”
He stared at me.
I kept my voice ordinary, though my heart wasn't cooperating.
“Not just weekends. Not until the next argument ends. Your clothes here, your school mornings here, a room you don't have to clear out when guests come.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“We can ask for the arrangement to be changed formally,” he said. “It won't happen just because we say so, but we can start.”
Noah looked down at his hands.
“Would Mom lose everything?”
“No,” I said. “She'd still be your mother.”
“Would I have to stop seeing her?”
“We'd work out contact that was safe,” Daniel replied. “You wouldn't have to erase her.”
The boy looked toward Sophie's fist, clenched in my sweater.
“And you want me here all the time?”
“Yes,” Daniel said immediately.
I nodded.
“But I want you to think about what you want. You don't have to answer to make us happy.”
Noah rose slowly and picked up the folder.
“Can I go upstairs for a minute?”
“Of course.”
We listened to his footsteps reach the landing.
Daniel moved his chair beside mine.
“Are you sure?”
I looked at the three plates still waiting by the sink, the backpack beside the couch, the science workbook underneath our grocery list.
“Yes.”
“It's a bigger promise.”
“I know.”
Upstairs, a drawer opened. Then closed.
My husband held my hand, and together we waited for Noah to decide whether he could believe us.
