"The Mafia Boss’s Son Begged Me to Stay. His Father Wouldn’t Let Me Walk Away." Chapter 4 — Tell Him the Truth
Chapter 4 — Tell Him the Truth
Rico lowered his other knee to the floor.
“No, Leo. Making a promise doesn’t make someone disappear.”
Leo held the drawing against his chest.
“Mommy promised.”
“I know.”
“She didn’t come.”
Rico’s hand lifted, then stopped before touching him.
“Your mommy wanted to come home.”
“Then why?”
“She was hurt very badly. The doctors tried to help her, but they couldn’t make her body work again. She died.”
Leo stared at him.
I sat beside them, close enough for the boy to reach me, far enough that his father had room to answer.
“Hospital?” Leo asked.
“Yes.”
“We get her?”
Rico’s face changed.
“No, sweetheart. We can’t bring her home.”
The paper bent between Leo’s fingers.
He looked toward the stairs, as though the right answer might be waiting somewhere else in the house.
“Mrs. Alvarez said Mommy sleeping.”
Rico closed his eyes briefly.
I remembered something Dr. Feld had told us in the kitchen: everyone needed to use the same words. Gentle words could still confuse a child if they meant something different every time.
“She was trying to help,” Rico said. “But Mommy isn’t sleeping. When we sleep, we wake up. Mommy can’t wake up.”
Leo looked at me.
I wanted desperately to offer him something easier.
Instead, I nodded.
“Daddy’s telling you the truth.”
His lower lip trembled.
“I was bad?”
Rico moved closer.
“No.”
“Broke truck.”
“That didn’t hurt Mommy.”
“Yelled.”
“Neither did that.”
Leo’s eyes filled.
Rico’s voice roughened, but he kept it steady enough to continue.
“Nothing you did made this happen. Not yelling, not breaking your truck, not anything.”
The boy dropped the drawing.
It landed between us.
Then he climbed into his father’s lap.
Rico wrapped his arms around him and looked over his head at me.
I had no useful advice left.
I stayed.
For several minutes, Leo cried without words. Rico rested his cheek against the boy’s hair, one broad hand spread across his back.
Nobody told him to stop.
Eventually, Leo pulled away.
“You get hurt?”
Rico glanced toward the front door.
I saw him considering the easy answer.
The one that would make this afternoon simpler.
Then he looked back at his son.
“Sometimes people get hurt.”
Leo’s face crumpled.
“But I take care of myself,” Rico added. “And I have people who help me.”
“Mommy people helped.”
Rico went silent.
Leo had found the weakness in his answer without understanding what he had done.
“I know,” Rico said finally.
The boy rubbed his eyes with both fists.
“You come back?”
“I’m going to do everything I can to come home to you.”
Leo studied him.
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
Rico said it firmly.
I wondered whether he understood how much that word might cost him.
We called Dr. Feld after Leo settled in the living room with Mrs. Alvarez.
Rico stood at the kitchen counter, the phone between us on speaker.

He repeated the conversation almost word for word.
When he reached the part about sleeping, Mrs. Alvarez came into the doorway.
Her eyes were wet.
“I didn’t know what to tell him.”
Rico turned.
For a moment, I worried he would blame her because blame was easier to hold than helplessness.
Instead, he pulled out a chair.
“Stay. We need to hear the same thing.”
She sat.
Dr. Feld walked us through what Leo might ask again, what he might misunderstand, and how often he might need the same explanation.
Rico rubbed his thumb along the edge of the counter.
“So when he asks tomorrow where she is—”
“You answer tomorrow,” she said.
“And the next day?”
“If he asks.”
Mrs. Alvarez nodded slowly.
I watched Rico’s expression.
He was a man accustomed to finishing difficult conversations by making a decision.
This one would not stay finished.
After the call, he looked at the drawing I had rescued from the foyer.
Elena stood at the edge of the page.
He smoothed the crease in her blue dress.
“Did I make it worse?”
“I don’t think telling him the truth made it worse.”
“He cried.”
“He was already missing her.”
Rico leaned against the counter.
“I’ve told people their brothers weren’t coming home.”
I looked at him.
He kept his eyes on the paper.
“I knew what to say. What to offer. Who to call.”
“And this is different.”
“He asked whether I could bring her back.”
His mouth tightened.
“For a second, I wanted to tell him yes.”
I stood beside him without touching him.
The house was quiet enough that we could hear Leo rolling his truck across the living-room floor.
Rico put the drawing down.
“What do I do now?”
“Go sit with him.”
“That’s it?”
“For the next few minutes.”
He let out a tired breath.
“You’re very determined to keep my ambitions small.”
“Your son is three. A few minutes is a lot.”
Rico looked at me then.
The exhaustion was still there, but something else had entered his expression.
Trust, perhaps.
I found that more unsettling than his anger.
Leo asked again at bedtime.
I had stayed later than planned because he wanted to show me where his bear slept.
Rico asked whether I minded.
I said I could stay until seven.
At six forty-five, Leo sat on his bed in dinosaur pajamas and looked at the empty space beside his father.
“Mommy come tuck?”
Rico paused with the blanket in his hands.
“No, sweetheart.”
Leo’s face tightened.
“Because dead?”
“Yes.”
The boy rubbed the bear’s worn ear.
Rico sat down.
“Would you like me to tell you something about her?”
Leo nodded.
“She used to steal the corner of your blanket.”
Leo looked offended.
“Mine.”
“I told her that.”
“Didn’t listen?”
“Not very well.”
A tiny smile appeared.
Rico glanced at me.
I leaned against the doorframe.

“She said your blankets were softer than ours,” he continued. “So she’d borrow a corner while she sat here.”
Leo lifted the edge.
“This?”
“That one.”
He considered it, then spread the corner carefully over his father’s knee.
“You borrow.”
Rico looked down.
“Thank you.”
I turned toward the hall before either of them could see my face.
A few minutes later, he came out and eased the door nearly shut.
I checked my phone.
Seven oh-three.
“Sorry,” he said.
I looked up.
“For making you late.”
“It’s three minutes.”
“You gave me a time.”
I put the phone away.
“Yes. I did.”
He stood close enough that I noticed a small tear in the skin beside his thumbnail.
He had worried it raw.
Without thinking, I looked at his hand.
He followed my gaze and tucked it into his pocket.
“Do you want dinner before you go?”
“I should get home.”
“All right.”
He didn’t argue.
That should not have felt like a gift.
It did.
We started down the stairs together.
Halfway down, the front door opened.
Dante entered without his usual greeting.
Rico stopped.
I felt the change before either man spoke.
Dante looked up at us.
“I need a word.”
Rico glanced toward the landing.
“Leo just went to sleep.”
“I know.”
“Then it can wait.”
Dante’s eyes moved to me.
“It shouldn’t.”
Rico descended the remaining stairs.
I stayed where I was.
Dante lowered his voice.
“We found him.”
Rico’s shoulders went still.
For several seconds, the house seemed to lose every ordinary sound.
“Who confirmed it?” he asked.
“Two sources. One of them saw him.”
“Where?”
“Staten Island.”
I gripped the stair rail.
I knew who they meant without hearing a name.
Rico turned toward me.
There was nothing soft in his face now.
“I’ll have someone take you home.”
“I can get myself home.”
“Clara.”
Dante shifted impatiently.
“He’s leaving tomorrow,” he said. “If we’re doing this, it has to be tonight.”
Rico looked toward the upstairs hallway.
I looked there too.
Only minutes earlier, his son had given him a corner of his blanket.
Now Dante waited beside the door, and Rico’s hand had returned to the pocket where he kept his phone.
Everything, he had promised.
I stood on the staircase and waited to see what he believed that meant.
