"The Mafia Boss’s Secret Son" Chapter 8 — The Other Moretti
Dante arrived in seven minutes.
Elena knew because she counted every one of them.
The moment he entered Victoria’s house, she shoved the phone into his hand.
“Fix this.”
Dante read the message.
Nothing visibly changed.
That frightened Elena more than anger would have.
He handed the phone to Nico.
“Trace it.”
Nico nodded and left.
Dante looked at Elena.
“Where’s Leo?”
“With Mia.”
“At the Bennett house?”
“Yes.”
“We’re moving him.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“You are not moving my son anywhere without telling me where.”
Dante held her gaze.
“My house.”
“The Gold Coast fortress?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“It has controlled access, internal security, and men I trust.”
“And it puts him inside the center of your world.”
“He entered my world the moment Vincent learned he existed.”
Elena flinched.
Dante immediately softened his voice.
“That came out wrong.”
“No. It came out exactly right.”
“Elena—”
“This is what I was afraid of.”
“I know.”
“I kept him away from this.”
“I know.”
“For three years, nobody knew he existed.”
“I know.”
“And after four days in Chicago, someone is photographing him through a window.”
Dante looked at the picture again.
His expression turned lethal.
“I will deal with Vincent.”
“How?”
Silence.
Elena shook her head.
“Exactly.”
“I’m not going to discuss that with you.”
“Because you’re protecting me?”
“Because some things are mine to handle.”
“No.”
Dante looked at her.
“No more secrets. No more decisions made over my head.”
“This is not the same thing.”
“It is always the same thing with you.”
Victoria stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Both looked at her.
“Leo is still at the Bennett house while you two argue about philosophy.”
That ended it.
They drove back together.
Dante’s security team arrived before them.
Mia stood inside holding Leo.
“What is happening?”
Elena took her son.
“We’re leaving.”
Leo looked sleepy.
“Zurich?”
The word struck Dante.
Elena looked at him.
Then at her son.
“Soon.”
Dante’s face hardened.
“Elena.”
“Not now.”
Security searched the house.
No intruder.
No broken locks.
Whoever took the photograph had done it from outside.
That did not make Elena feel safer.
Dante crouched beside Leo.
“Remember my house?”
Leo nodded.
“The one with no toys.”
Dante almost smiled.
“That one.”
“We bought toys yet?”
“Not yet.”
Leo sighed.
Dante glanced at Elena.
“Would you like to stay there tonight?”
Leo looked at his mother.
Elena hated that Dante had asked instead of ordered.
It made saying no harder.
“One night,” she said.
The Moretti residence was exactly as Elena remembered it.
Stone.
Glass.
Security.
Too much silence.
Except now there were dinosaurs on the coffee table.
Dante had bought them.
Dozens.
Leo stood in the middle of the living room with his mouth open.
“You got toys.”
“I was advised that I needed them.”
“Who told you?”
“You.”
Leo seemed satisfied.
Elena was not.
“You bought half a toy store.”

“I didn’t know which dinosaur was the correct one.”
“There is no correct dinosaur.”
Leo turned around.
“Ankylosaurus.”
Dante pointed at him.
“That’s what I thought.”
Despite everything, Elena laughed.
For ten seconds, fear loosened its grip.
Then Nico entered.
“Dante.”
One word.
The room changed.
Dante followed him into the office.
Elena waited thirty seconds before following.
Nico looked at her.
Dante didn’t object.
Progress.
“The number was disposable,” Nico said. “But we found the route.”
“Vincent?” Elena asked.
“Someone attached to him.”
Dante leaned against the desk.
“Where is he?”
“River North.”
“Of course.”
Elena crossed her arms.
“I want to meet him.”
Dante stared at her.
“No.”
“There it is.”
“Absolutely not.”
“He knows who I am.”
“Yes.”
“He knows who Leo is.”
“Yes.”
“He may know what happened to my father.”
“Yes.”
“So I’m involved.”
Dante’s jaw flexed.
“That does not mean I walk you into a room with him.”
“You walked my sister into a marriage because of him.”
Victoria, standing near the door, went still.
Dante’s eyes flashed.
“That was different.”
“How?”
“Because I had no better option.”
“You always have that excuse.”
“Elena.”
“No.”
She moved closer.
“I’m leaving Monday.”
The room went silent.
Dante stared at her.
“You’re still planning to go?”
“I was planning to go before someone photographed my son. Now I’m certain.”
“You think Zurich makes you untouchable?”
“No.”
“But it gives Leo a life where armed men don’t stand outside his bedroom.”
Dante looked toward the ceiling, as though he could see through it to where Leo was playing upstairs.
“He needs security now whether he’s here or in Switzerland.”
“That is exactly why I’m leaving.”
“Elena.”
“I’m taking him home.”
Dante’s expression hardened.
“You can’t disappear again.”
“Watch me.”
“I’m his father.”
“And I am not stopping you from being his father.”
“From another continent?”
“You own planes.”
“This isn’t funny.”
“I’m not joking.”
Dante stepped closer.
For a second, Elena saw the old version of him.
The man accustomed to obedience.
Then something changed.
He stopped.
His hands relaxed.
When he spoke again, his voice was quiet.
“If you leave because you hate me, I’ll let you go.”
Elena stared.
He swallowed.
“But if you’re leaving because you’re scared, let me protect him first.”
She had expected a threat.
A lawyer.
A custody warning.
A locked gate.
Anything except permission.
“You’d let us leave?”
Dante’s face tightened.
“I don’t want you to.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
“Yes.”
The answer hurt.
“Yes, Elena. If you decide Zurich is best for Leo, I won’t use my name, my money, or a court to trap you here.”
She searched his face.
“Why?”
His laugh was quiet and bitter.
“Because apparently it took losing you for three years to understand what you’ve been trying to tell me for eight.”
Elena said nothing.
“I can protect you without owning your choices.”

The words landed somewhere dangerous.
Before she could answer, Nico’s phone rang.
He checked it.
“Problem.”
Dante turned.
“What?”
“Vincent left River North.”
“Where’s he going?”
Nico looked at Elena.
“The Bennett house.”
Her blood ran cold.
“Why?”
“We don’t know.”
Elena reached for her coat.
Dante caught her wrist.
She looked down.
He released her immediately.
“Let security go first.”
“My father’s files are there.”
“Elena.”
“The flash drive isn’t the only thing he left.”
Dante’s expression sharpened.
“What else?”
She remembered the document case.
The handwritten envelope.
The contract.
And something she had barely noticed in her anger.
A smaller sealed envelope at the bottom.
It had Dante’s name on it.
“I found something in Dad’s case.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
“For who?”
“You.”
Dante stared at her.
“I didn’t open it.”
“Where is it?”
“At the house.”
Nico swore.
Dante was already moving.
Twenty minutes later, three black SUVs stopped outside the Bennett residence.
The front door was open.
Elena’s heart dropped.
Dante blocked her path.
“Stay behind me.”
This time, she did.
They entered.
Nothing appeared stolen.
Nothing broken.
The study door stood open.
Elena rushed inside.
The leather document case was on the desk.
She opened it.
The envelope was gone.
“No.”
Dante looked at the empty compartment.
“What did it say on the front?”
“Your name.”
Nico entered.
“We found something.”
They followed him into the hallway.
A man stood just inside the front entrance.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
Early forties.
Expensive charcoal suit.
No weapon visible.
He smiled when he saw Dante.
“Cousin.”
Dante stopped.
Elena knew immediately.
Vincent Moretti.
His gaze shifted to her.
“Elena Bennett.”
“Where’s the letter?”
Vincent smiled wider.
“So Richard really didn’t tell you anything.”
Dante stepped forward.
“Give it back.”
“Back? It was written about my family.”
“It was addressed to me.”
“Semantics.”
Dante’s voice dropped.
“Vincent.”
The warning in it would have frightened most people.
Vincent only looked amused.
Then his eyes moved to the staircase.
“To think you had a son all this time.”
Dante moved so quickly Elena barely saw it.
One second he was beside her.
The next he stood directly between Vincent and the stairs.
“Do not talk about my son.”
Vincent raised both hands.
“There he is.”
“What?”
“The real Dante.”
Vincent looked past him at Elena.
“You always wondered what could make him lose control?”
His smile disappeared.
“Now everyone knows.”
Elena’s skin went cold.
Dante took another step.
“Leave.”
Vincent adjusted his cuff.
“Gladly.”
He walked toward the door.
Then stopped beside Elena.
“Before you run back to Switzerland, ask Dante one question.”
She said nothing.
Vincent leaned closer.
“Ask him what your father offered him before Victoria.”
Elena’s pulse jumped.
“I already know.”
Vincent’s eyebrows rose.
“Do you?”
He looked at Dante.
For the first time, Elena saw genuine alarm in Dante’s face.
Vincent smiled.
“Then ask him why he said no.”
He walked outside.
No one followed.
Elena turned slowly.
Dante did not look at her.
Eight years.
No marriage.
One secret contract.
Her name as the original bride.
Dante refusing it.
Then marrying Victoria.
“What does he mean?”
“Elena.”
“No.”
She stepped in front of him.
“What haven’t you told me?”
Dante’s eyes met hers.
Before he could answer, Nico came back into the study carrying something.
“Dante.”
In his gloved hand was a torn piece of Richard Bennett’s missing letter.
Only one sentence remained readable.
Dante took it.
Elena read over his shoulder.
The handwriting was her father’s.
If Elena ever learns why you refused to marry her, she will finally understand what I did.
Elena looked at Dante.
He folded the paper once.
His face had gone pale.
And suddenly Elena understood something terrifying.
The marriage to Victoria was not the biggest secret.
The reason Dante had refused to marry Elena in the first place was.
