"The Maid Who Stopped the Mafia Boss’s Wedding" Chapter 6 — The Truth About Marcus
Dominic had Marcus against the car before the video call ended.
“Give me one reason,” Dominic said.
Marcus did not reach for his weapon. “Because the footage is fake.”
Evelyn seized Dominic's wrist. “Wait.”
The screen had frozen on Daniel's face. She enlarged the image.
“His bruise is on the left side.”
“What does that prove?” Dominic asked.
“The prison attorney's photograph from this afternoon showed it on the right. The video was mirrored—or recorded before today.”
Marcus slowly raised his hands. “Check the badge.”
The metal shield read RUSSO SECURITY, but the eagle faced the wrong direction.
Dominic released him.
“You had five seconds from death,” Evelyn said.
Marcus straightened his coat. “I've had worse Mondays.”
It was Saturday, but nobody corrected him.
Inside the penthouse, Marcus opened a private file he had hidden from Dominic for three years. It contained prison transfer requests, medical payments, and photographs of Daniel meeting confidential attorneys.
“You protected him,” Evelyn said.
“Anna asked me to protect both of you if anything happened to her.”
“Why didn't you tell Dominic?”
Marcus looked at his employer. “Because Anna believed someone close to him intercepted every order.”
Dominic accepted the answer without anger. That frightened Evelyn more than his earlier violence.
“Who knew Daniel's protected schedule?” he asked.
“Me, the superintendent, and your aunt Rosa.”
Dominic called Rosa Russo.
She answered on the first ring, crying.
“Victor has my grandson,” she said. “He made me send the transfer times. Dominic, I am sorry.”
“Where is the boy?”
“I don't know. Victor showed me a live feed from a warehouse. Red walls. Water behind him.”
Evelyn remembered Anna's route symbols. “Red Hook Marine Terminal has old customs sheds painted brick red.”
Marcus pulled up port maps.
Rosa continued. “Victor said Daniel will be moved tomorrow night. He said after the witnesses leave, there will be nothing left to investigate.”
The call disconnected.
Marcus enlarged the terminal schedule. A Russo Maritime ship was due to depart at 11:40 p.m. carrying relief generators for the Caribbean.
“Generators provide sealed housings large enough for people,” Evelyn said.
Dominic looked at Marcus. “How many witnesses?”
“Anna's notes referenced nine names. Some disappeared after her death.”
“Victor is moving them,” Evelyn said. “Then destroying the terminal.”
Dominic contacted Assistant U.S. Attorney Lena Park from a clean phone. She arrived forty minutes later with two agents and no patience.
“You want federal protection after spending twenty years avoiding federal attention,” she said.
“I want the terminal searched.”
“On evidence obtained from an illegal recording and a convicted killer's coded receipts?”
Evelyn placed Anna's trust documents in front of her. “On evidence connected to attempted murder, witness tampering, and a compromised prison transfer.”
Lena read the first page. “Better.”
Dominic offered access to the shipping system. In return, he demanded Daniel's immediate federal protection.
“You do not set terms,” Lena said.
“Tonight I do.”

Evelyn leaned between them. “While you measure authority, Victor is moving people.”
Lena looked at her. “You are the housekeeper.”
“Executive housekeeper.”
“And temporary controller of twenty-one percent of Russo Maritime.”
“That too.”
Lena almost smiled. “I can move Daniel under emergency witness authority. I cannot raid an active terminal without a location.”
Marcus highlighted three red sheds near Pier Nine.
At that moment, the private elevator opened.
Celeste stepped into the penthouse wearing Anna's missing wedding ring.
Agents raised their weapons.
“Relax,” Celeste said. “If I wanted Dominic dead, Evelyn would not have knocked over the right glass.”
Dominic stared at the ring. “Take it off.”
Celeste held up her hand. “Anna gave it to me the night she died.”
“Lie again and you leave without the hand.”
Evelyn moved between them. “Why are you here?”
“Because Victor intends to replace Dominic tomorrow, and he has decided I know too much.”
She placed a port access card on the table.
“This opens Shed Twelve. Daniel will pass through it at ten.”
Lena bagged the card. “How do you know?”
“I scheduled the transfer.”
Dominic moved toward her.
Celeste did not retreat. “I helped frame Daniel. I helped redirect Anna's car. But I did not order her death.”
“Who did?” Evelyn asked.
Celeste turned the ring around her finger. Inside the band, tiny numbers had been engraved.
“Anna did not hide her evidence in the shoes,” she said. “She hid the key in her wedding ring.”
She pulled it off and placed it in Evelyn's palm.
“And she left a message for the woman who would wear it next.”
Lena ordered an agent to scan the ring. A seam appeared beneath the stone, secured by a six-digit code.
Anna's wedding date failed. Daniel's inmate number failed.
“The last ambulance,” Evelyn said. “What happened?”
Marcus opened a dispatch record. A private Russo ambulance had reached Anna eleven minutes before county paramedics, then left without transporting anyone.
“Victor's physician claimed she had no pulse,” Marcus said. “A traffic image showed her moving when the ambulance arrived.”
Dominic gripped the table. “Why was that not in my file?”
“I found it after the archive was erased. It is why I began protecting Daniel.”
Evelyn entered the ambulance unit number. The ring opened.
Inside was a wafer-thin storage chip containing nine witness names, container numbers, and medical intake photographs.
The final document was titled IF DOMINIC CHOOSES THE FAMILY. It authorized release of every file if Dominic refused to surrender the port records.
“She expected me to fail,” he said.
Evelyn stood beside him. “She gave you a way not to.”
Lena spread the witness list beside the port map. Three names belonged to customs inspectors officially listed as dead. Two were former Russo accountants. One was a nurse from Victor's private ambulance.
“If any testify, his network collapses,” Lena said.
Evelyn examined their intake photographs. Each witness held the same gray blanket with a red border.
Marcus recognized it. “St. Agnes Recovery Center. Russo Maritime funds a private wing.”
Agents reached the facility twenty minutes later. It had been emptied. Cameras showed vans moving south toward Brooklyn.
Dominic called the port union representative. The man denied knowing about Shed Twelve, but Evelyn heard another voice prompting him.
“He is being watched,” she said.
Dominic changed tactics. “Frank, tell the person beside you that Pier Nine's fire system failed inspection.”
Silence followed.
Then Frank said, “It didn't fail. Someone drained the suppression tanks yesterday.”
The call ended.
Victor was not only moving witnesses. He was preparing a fire nobody could stop.
Lena requested warrants for every Russo facility in Red Hook. The judge approved only one shed.
“Someone is slowing us down,” she said.
“Judge Mercer,” Evelyn replied. “He signed Daniel's plea.”
Lena faced Dominic. “I need every shipping record, including the crimes you are not comfortable admitting.”
“You will have them.”
“They may prosecute you too.”
Dominic authorized complete access. A warning stated that disclosure could destroy the Russo organization.
He pressed CONFIRM.
It was not redemption. It was the first payment toward it.
Lena copied the authorization before anyone could revoke it. Federal investigators could finally see both Russo companies at once: the respectable corporation aboveground and the criminal machinery hidden beneath it.
Nothing could be quietly buried now.
Not ever.
