"The Maid Who Stopped the Mafia Boss’s Wedding" Chapter 5 — The Man on the Recording
Victor Russo entered the abandoned hotel alone.
The eight men outside remained beside the SUVs, hands beneath their jackets. Inside room 614, Dominic stood between Evelyn and the door.
“You brought an army to talk?” Dominic called.
Victor's voice rose from the stairwell. “I brought insurance. You brought my future daughter-in-law.”
Evelyn tightened her hand around Anna's recorder.
Dominic glanced at Marcus. “West fire stairs?”
“Collapsed between four and five.”
“Roof?”
“Two men watching it.”
Evelyn looked at the old laundry chute beside the bathroom. “This hotel sent sheets downstairs somehow.”
Marcus checked the narrow steel door. “It may reach the service basement.”
“May?” Dominic asked.
“The building was condemned.”
“So is our current plan.” Evelyn opened the chute.
Victor reached the sixth-floor landing.
Dominic took the recorder from her. For one sharp moment, Evelyn thought he meant to surrender it.
Instead, he removed the damaged memory card and tucked it beneath her bandage.
“The recorder is empty now,” he whispered. “Let him have it.”
He opened the door as Victor reached the hallway.
Victor was silver-haired, broad, and dressed for the wedding he had watched collapse. He carried no visible weapon.
“Dominic,” he said. “You have embarrassed the family enough for one day.”
“Celeste poisoned my glass.”
“A maid knocked over champagne and created a story.”
Victor's eyes moved to Evelyn. “Daniel's sister always did inherit his imagination.”
“You knew who I was,” Evelyn said.
“From the day you applied.”
Dominic turned toward him. “You approved her employment file.”
“I wanted to know what she had.”
Evelyn held up the recorder. “Now you know.”
Victor smiled. “Anna was sentimental. Sentimental people collect fragments and mistake them for truth.”
“This fragment has Dominic ordering someone to handle her,” Evelyn said.
Victor's smile deepened. “Then perhaps you should be standing behind me.”
The doubt hurt because it already existed.
Dominic took the recorder and threw it to his uncle. Victor caught it.
“Let Daniel live,” Dominic said.
“Daniel is alive because I allow it.”
While Victor looked at the device, Evelyn slipped through the bathroom. Marcus followed. Dominic remained in the hall.
“Come on,” she whispered.
He did not move.
Victor examined the empty recorder. His expression changed.
Dominic struck him once, fast and controlled, and stepped backward as Marcus's smoke charge rolled into the hall.
Gray smoke filled the floor.
They climbed into the laundry chute.
The drop ended in a canvas cart two stories below. Evelyn hit hard, rolled, and found Dominic beside her. Marcus landed last.
They crossed the boiler room as Victor's men entered above.
An old delivery tunnel opened behind the furnace. It led beneath the parking lot and surfaced beside a fenced container yard.
Marcus had a second vehicle waiting three blocks away.
Inside it, Evelyn removed the memory card from her bandage.
“You could have told me you were giving him an empty shell.”

Dominic wiped dust from his cuff. “Your reaction needed to convince him.”
“You used me.”
“I kept you alive.”
“Those are not the same thing.”
She inserted the card into Marcus's encrypted tablet. The damaged second file appeared again.
Marcus ran recovery software. Broken sounds filled the car.
Dominic's recorded voice repeated: “She knows too much. Handle it tonight.”
Then static.
A second sentence emerged.
“Get Anna off Pier Nine and take her home. Do not let my father see her.”
Marcus looked up. “That is the call I never received.”
The next voice belonged to Victor.
“Daniel will drive.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
“I ordered protection,” he said. “My father turned it into the route that killed her.”
Evelyn wanted the recovered line to erase her anger. It did not.
“You hid this file from investigators.”
“I hid the call log. I never knew Anna recorded the conversation.”
“Why hide anything?”
“Because the log placed Daniel on my order. If I admitted I sent him, every captain would claim I arranged Anna's death. The organization would split.”
“So Daniel went to prison to keep your organization whole.”
Dominic did not answer.
The silence was confession enough.
Evelyn removed the engagement ring he had given her for the courthouse cameras and placed it in his palm.
“The contract is over.”
“Victor still controls the board if you leave.”
“Then find another shield.”
Before the vehicle reached Dominic's Manhattan building, a motorcycle accelerated toward them from a side street. Marcus shoved Evelyn behind the armored door while Dominic pulled her down between the seats.
The rider did not fire. He threw a padded envelope through the narrowing garage gate and disappeared into traffic.
Inside was a photocopy of Daniel's plea agreement. One sentence had been highlighted: THE DEFENDANT WAIVES ALL CLAIMS AGAINST RUSSO MARITIME AND ITS OFFICERS.
“That clause has nothing to do with murder,” Evelyn said.
Dominic studied the witness signature. “Celeste certified it.”
A note covered the back: ASK DOMINIC WHAT HE REMOVED FROM ANNA'S FILE.
Evelyn looked up. “What did you remove?”
“A photograph of Anna meeting a federal agent at Pier Nine.”
“You knew she was investigating.”
“I thought the agent was using her. If my captains saw the photograph, they would call her an informant.”
“So you hid it.”
“It is in my private vault. You can have it.”
“You don't get credit for returning evidence four years late.”
“I know.”
She reached for the door when the vehicle stopped beneath Dominic's Manhattan building.
He caught her hand. “I was wrong.”
It was the first unqualified admission she had heard from him.
“Four years too late,” she said.
“Yes.”
His thumb rested over her pulse. Neither moved.
“I cannot return those years,” he said. “I can tear apart every lie that took them.”
“Even if the truth destroys you?”
“Especially then.”
Evelyn kissed him before she could decide whether forgiveness belonged in it.
Dominic froze for half a heartbeat, then pulled her closer. The kiss held grief, anger, and every argument they had not finished.
She broke away first.
His phone rang.
It was a secure video call from Sing Sing.
Daniel appeared on-screen, seated against a concrete wall. A hand held a knife beneath his jaw.
“Evie,” he said, breathing hard. “Don't trust Marcus.”
The camera shifted, showing a Russo security badge beside him.
Daniel looked directly at Dominic.
“Your security chief sold us out.”
The blade pressed closer. Daniel forced out one more sentence before the image cut to black.
“Ask him about Anna's last ambulance.”
Marcus went still.
Dominic noticed.
So did Evelyn.
Dominic took Marcus's weapon before questioning him.
“The ambulance was mine,” Marcus said. “Victor ordered it through my dispatch account. By the time I learned, the vehicle had been burned in a Newark salvage yard.”
“You concealed that?”
“I saved one dispatch page from Victor. Anna had written a six-digit number on it.”
Marcus removed a sealed copy from his wallet. “I have carried it since Daniel was sentenced.”
Evelyn read the number. It matched the pattern engraved inside Anna's wedding ring.
“You suspected Marcus for twelve seconds,” she told Dominic. “Victor only needs one second of doubt to turn us against each other.”
Dominic returned the weapon. “Then he does not get another one.”
Trust survived, but it would never again be automatic.
