"My Date Called Me Broke. The Waitress Who Defended Me Had No Idea Who I Was." Chapter 4 — Your Company
Chapter 4 — Your Company
“Walter said the warning was being stopped before it reached your office,” Gordon continued. “He couldn’t prove who was doing it. But he sent the same report through three different channels and got the same answer every time.”
“What answer?”
“That the matter had been reviewed. That no further work was necessary.”
“And now the equipment has failed.”
“Yes.”
I walked toward the Corolla, keeping the phone pressed to my ear.
“Why didn’t you tell me this when I paid?”
“I wasn’t sure what you knew.”
“You thought I might have ignored him myself.”
Gordon said nothing.
That was answer enough.
At the car, I pulled open the driver’s door.
“You reversed the whole payment,” I said.
“I’m correcting the check. The wine should never have been there. I’ll send the revised receipt.”
“And Cassie’s wages?”
“She won’t lose anything.”
“She shouldn’t have had to wonder whether she would.”
“I know.”
“Knowing it after she leaves doesn’t help her while she’s standing in front of you.”
He exhaled slowly.
“No. It doesn’t.”
For the first time, he hadn’t tried to defend himself.
I sat behind the wheel without starting the engine.
“Where is Walter?”
“Cassie’s brother took him to St. Luke’s. She texted the restaurant to say she might miss tomorrow’s lunch shift.”
The pharmacy bag came back to me. So did the way she had searched for her subway card, trying to keep her hands steady.
“Did she say how he was?”
“They’re checking him.”
I looked through the windshield at the rain.
I could be at the hospital in fifteen minutes. Less, if I called my driver and left the Corolla where it was.
But Cassie had refused a ride from a stranger. Arriving uninvited with a security detail would make that refusal meaningless.
“Send her my number,” I told Gordon.
“What should I say?”
“Tell her I own Bellacort. Tell her I’ve learned about her father’s report and need to speak to her.”
“Mr. Vale—”
“Don’t soften it. She deserves to know who she was talking to.”
“All right.”
“And don’t give me her number. Let her decide whether to call.”
I ended the conversation.
The car’s interior smelled faintly of old upholstery and the warehouse employee’s peppermint gum. A parking receipt from March lay in the cup holder.
I turned the key.
The engine caught on the second attempt.
My phone lit up almost immediately.
Martin had sent a document.
I kept the car parked and opened it.
The first page carried Walter Doyle’s name, an installation number, and a date from three years earlier. His findings were written plainly.
During a power interruption followed by restart, the unit could fail to stabilize. The existing temperature alarm might not provide enough warning. He recommended a replacement control board and a separate monitoring device.
Below his signature was a typed conclusion.
Reviewed and resolved. No further action required.

There was no explanation of what had been repaired.
No replacement part number.
No follow-up test.
I called Martin.
“This says resolved. Send me the work order that resolved it.”
“We’re still retrieving the older service files.”
“Then send the invoice. The parts record. Anything showing the control board was changed.”
“I don’t have it yet.”
“Was it changed?”
“I can’t confirm that tonight.”
“The hospital needs a replacement tonight. We don’t get to be uncertain about the configuration.”
“The team’s checking it.”
“Make sure they receive Walter’s findings.”
A brief silence.
“Adrian, that report was classified as a contractor disagreement.”
“About what?”
“The proposed modification.”
“Did someone establish that his warning was wrong?”
“I’ll have to look at the review.”
“Then look.”
I ended the call before impatience made me less precise.
A document could disappear into a company without anyone destroying it. Change its category. Close the task. Attach a conclusion that sounded final.
Everyone after that could point to the conclusion and stop reading.
My phone rang with a number I didn’t recognize.
I answered.
“Adrian?”
Cassie.
“Yes.”
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she said, “Gordon told me you own Bellacort.”
“I do.”
“The refrigeration company.”
“Yes.”
“You told me you were struggling to pay rent.”
I closed my eyes.
“I told Vanessa that. You heard it, and I let you believe it.”
“You let me argue with you about paying for the wine.”
“I know.”
“Did you think that was funny?”
“No.”
“Because I was worried about you.”
The words landed harder than anything Vanessa had said.
“I know that now.”
“You knew it then.”
She was right.
I pressed my hand against the steering wheel.
“Yes. I did.”
Somewhere behind her, a speaker announced a name. I heard wheels rattling across a hard floor.
“How is your father?”
“They’re running tests.”
“Is Noah with you?”
“Yes.”
“I’ve received one of your father’s reports. I’m trying to find the records showing what happened afterward.”
“Nothing happened afterward.”
Her voice had changed. The anger was still there, but beneath it was an exhaustion I hadn’t heard at the restaurant.
“How much do you know?” I asked.
“I know they stopped calling him.”
“Who did?”
“Your company. He used to get work from Bellacort all the time. After he complained about that installation, the calls stopped.”
I looked at the report on my phone.
“He was an independent consultant?”
“Yes. That meant nobody had to tell him he’d been fired. They just stopped offering contracts.”
“Did they explain why?”
“He said they’d decided he was difficult.”
“Did he tell you about the warning?”
“Only that the equipment needed changes. He wouldn’t give me the details.”
“Why not?”
“He said I had enough to worry about.”
I could imagine the argument. A father trying to protect his daughter from something she was already helping him survive.
“I’d like to speak to him,” I said.
“As his old client?”
“As the person responsible for finding out why his warning wasn’t acted on.”
“And you didn’t know?”
“I hadn’t seen the report until tonight.”
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
She went quiet.
Then, very softly, “That doesn’t make it better.”
“No.”
I wouldn’t tell her that my procedures should have prevented it. Procedures were a poor defense when she was waiting outside a treatment room with the consequences of their failure.
“May I come to the hospital?”
“What are you going to do when you get here?”
“Listen. Answer your questions. Speak to your father if he wants me to.”
“You’re not bringing people with you?”
“No.”
“No company doctor?”
“No.”
“And you’re not going to start offering to pay for everything.”
“I won’t.”
There was another pause.
“I’ll tell Noah,” she said. “Come to the waiting area. Don’t go looking for Dad.”
“I’ll be there shortly.”
“Adrian?”
“Yes?”
“That waitress you met tonight wasn’t part of your test.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
I looked at the passenger seat where she had refused to sit.
“I’m beginning to understand what I did.”
She ended the call.
I placed the phone in its cradle and pulled away from the curb.
At the first red light, I caught my reflection in the rearview mirror.
The flannel shirt had done exactly what I intended. It had hidden the money, the power, the name.
I hadn’t considered what else it would hide until someone decent started to trust me.
