"The Little Girl Who Put a Purple Crayon Beside My Loaded Pistol" Chapter 9 — Everything He Called Protection
Chapter 9 — Everything He Called Protection
“I’m protecting the people you put at risk,” I said.
Julian went silent.
“Come to the house at seven.”
“We should meet at my office.”
“No.”
“You’re turning this into something it doesn’t need to be.”
“Seven.”
I ended the call.
Maria remained in the doorway.
“What did he say?”
“That I have to choose.”
“Between what?”
“His version of my life and everyone else.”
She crossed her arms.
“What are you going to ask him?”
I showed her the note from Miguel’s scanned notebook.
She read it twice.
Then she put it down.
“I want to be there.”
“Maria—”
“He went to my husband. Someone came into my home. Those are my questions too.”
I looked toward the stairs.
“Who will stay with Sophia?”
“Mrs. Donnelly. I’ll explain that we’re having a meeting downstairs.”
I nodded.
“Daniel knows what we have. He’ll keep working whether Julian answers or not.”
“Good.”
Before seven, I removed the originals we still possessed from the conference room.
Daniel had custody of the forged letter. Maria retained the photographs and Miguel’s personal pages.
On the table, I placed copies.
The building image. The scanned notebook page. The contradictory reports. The transactions we had verified.
Julian arrived carrying nothing.
He paused when he saw Maria.
Then he looked at Marco.
“What exactly is this?”
“A chance to explain,” I said.
He took his usual chair.
I remained standing.
“How did you know Daniel was here?”
“Someone mentioned his car.”
“Who?”
He looked at the papers.
“Anthony, if you have an accusation, make it.”
I sat.
“Lucia Bianchi.”
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I had known him for too long to miss it.
“What about her?”
“My father told me she died.”
Julian looked at Maria again.
I placed Lucia’s photograph in front of him.
“She didn’t.”
He said nothing.
“She had my son. She raised him. She died twelve years ago believing I wanted nothing to do with either of them.”
His eyes dropped to the photograph.
“Did you know?”
He folded his hands.
“Your father made decisions he believed were necessary.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Julian looked at me.
“Yes.”
Maria’s breath caught.
Marco shifted behind my chair.
I kept my voice level.
“When did you know?”
“From the beginning.”
“Before I came home?”
“Yes.”
I had imagined denial.
Anger.
A demand for proof.
The ease of his answer was worse.
I slid the copied rejection letter toward him.
“Who wrote this?”
He glanced at it.
Then at the photograph.
“Your father wanted you to understand your responsibilities.”
“Who wrote it?”
His mouth tightened.
“I did.”
I looked down at the signature.
“How many times did you practice my name?”
“Anthony.”
“How many?”
“I don’t remember.”
He had remembered where to sit for thirty-four years.
He couldn’t remember that.
I pushed the letter closer.
“You told her I chose you.”

“I told her you had chosen your family.”
“She was my family.”
“You were twenty-two. You thought being in love solved everything.”
“No. I thought being in love meant I didn’t get to disappear when it became difficult.”
Julian leaned back.
“Your father knew what would happen. Enemies would learn her name. They would learn about the baby.”
“So you left her alone.”
“We arranged money.”
Maria spoke.
“Did she take it?”
Julian turned toward her.
“I don’t know.”
“Then you don’t know what you arranged.”
He looked irritated.
I put a hand flat on the table.
“Answer her.”
His eyes returned to mine.
For the first time, he seemed to notice that I was not waiting for him to explain how the room should work.
“I believe she refused,” he said.
Maria nodded once.
“Miguel said she worked nights.”
Julian looked at the photograph again.
I wanted him to look longer.
I wanted him to count the years.
Instead, he straightened a page that had become crooked.
“When did you find Miguel?”
His hand stopped.
I pointed to the notebook.
“He wrote about a visit.”
“Eight years ago.”
“You went to him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He was asking questions.”
“About me?”
“About the past.”
“Did you tell him the truth?”
“I told him what your life was.”
Maria stepped nearer the table.
“You showed him photographs.”
Julian nodded.
“Articles. Reports. People you dealt with. He deserved to know what approaching you could bring into his life.”
Some of that was true.
I hated him for using the truth so well.
But hatred didn’t make the facts disappear.
Miguel had looked at me and found reasons to stay away.
Those reasons had existed.
“What did you say about Lucia?” I asked.
“That the past couldn’t be changed.”
“Convenient.”
“It was accurate.”
“And when he asked whether I knew he existed?”
Julian looked toward the door.
“Julian.”
“I told him you had made your choice.”
Maria’s hand closed around the back of an empty chair.
“You lied again.”
He didn’t answer her.
I pushed the building image toward him.
“Did you enter her apartment?”
His eyes stayed on it.
“The face isn’t visible.”
“I didn’t ask what was visible.”
“You’re relying on a poor photograph of a watch.”
“No. I’m asking you a question.”
He looked at Marco.
“You let this happen?”
Marco’s voice was quiet.
“I let Maria report a burglary.”
Julian turned back to me.
“Those papers belonged to a private matter.”
“So did her home.”
“They could have been misunderstood.”
“By whom?”
“By you.”
I let him hear his own answer.
Then I asked again.
“Did you take the box?”
He breathed through his nose.
“Yes.”
Maria let go of the chair.
“Where is it?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“My office.”
“The letters are mine.”
“I’ll have them returned.”
“Tonight,” I said.
Julian reached for his phone.
“Not yet.”
His hand stopped.

“You’ll give Daniel the location. He’ll arrange their recovery with Maria and the people investigating the burglary.”
He stared at me.
“You’re involving them in this?”
“They were already involved when you entered her apartment.”
“That was a mistake.”
“So was the forged letter?”
He looked away.
“Was visiting my son another mistake? Was letting me bury a woman who was still alive a mistake?”
“Your father ordered it.”
“You kept doing it after he died.”
That silenced him.
Maria moved beside my chair.
“Miguel was coming to see you,” she said.
I looked up at her.
“He told me he’d made up his mind. He wanted the appointment behind him first. Then he was going to ask Marco to arrange it.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed.
“He stopped returning my calls.”
“Yes,” she said. “He did.”
I watched his surprise.
For all his control, Miguel had made one decision without him.
“When did you last speak?” I asked.
Julian gave a date.
Maria confirmed it matched the call Miguel had mentioned.
“And his death?” I asked.
“I had nothing to do with it.”
Maria’s face crumpled.
“He was ill.”
Her voice shook, but she kept speaking.
“I gave Daniel the medical records too. I knew you’d ask. Miguel had a problem with his heart. He didn’t get to finish finding out how to live with it.”
I lowered my eyes.
There was no person in that room I could punish into giving my son another day.
Julian had stolen years.
The last one had ended without his help.
I looked at the verified transactions.
“But you are responsible for Queens.”
His expression closed.
“You don’t understand those arrangements.”
“Then explain why properties changed hands near every street you told us was about to become violent.”
“They were opportunities.”
“Created by whom?”
He pushed his chair back an inch.
“I kept the organization strong.”
“You made people afraid, then offered to solve their problem.”
“I made sure they knew where authority was.”
I looked at the signatures.
His.
Mine.
The damage did not stop at his chair.
“You’re finished authorizing anything,” I said.
Julian stood.
“So you think.”
Marco moved beside the door.
Julian ignored him.
“You can remove my access. You can hand papers to that lawyer. But the men outside this room don’t work because your name is printed on a company.”
“I know how they work.”
“Then you know what happens when they stop taking your calls.”
He looked at Maria.
I stood.
“Look at me.”
He did.
“Whatever happens next, you don’t make her responsible for it.”
His jaw tightened.
For a moment, I thought he might finally apologize.
Instead, he glanced toward the staircase.
“You’ve put a child upstairs and convinced yourself you can become a different man by morning.”
“No.”
“Then don’t destroy everything because you suddenly dislike what it cost.”
My right hand rested on the table.
Beneath it was the locked drawer.
Julian noticed.
He had known that drawer longer than Marco had.
He lowered his voice.
“Go ahead, Anthony. Show your granddaughter what her family really is.”
