"The Little Girl Who Put a Purple Crayon Beside My Loaded Pistol" Chapter 8 — My Son’s Other Discovery
Chapter 8 — My Son’s Other Discovery
“Is there something else?” Julian asked.
I folded Miguel’s note.
“Yes. From tonight onward, no one gives instructions in my name without my direct approval.”
Carbone shifted in his chair.
“That slows everything down.”
“It would have stopped three crews from moving yesterday.”
Julian’s gaze stayed on me.
“You’re making a temporary problem into a permanent restriction.”
“Then it should be easy to live with until the temporary problem is solved.”
I ended the meeting.
No accusation. No photograph passed around the table.
If Julian believed I had enough to confront him, he would start deciding what could still be destroyed.
I wanted him uncertain.
At the door, he stopped beside me.
“Whatever Marco has told you, remember who was here before him.”
“I remember.”
“Your father trusted me.”
“Yes.”
“And so did you.”
I opened the door for him.
He left without finishing.
When the cars were gone, I called the office manager.
Julian’s staff could retain records. They could no longer authorize payments, collect files, or speak to employees on my behalf.
Every request was to be recorded and sent to me.
“Should I tell him why?” she asked.
“Tell him the instructions came from me.”
Marco waited until I hung up.
“You’ve warned him.”
“I’ve limited him. There’s a difference.”
“He’ll move what he can.”
“Then tomorrow we’ll see what he tries to move.”
I sent Daniel the meeting reports and asked him to compare them with the property folders from Miguel’s drive.
He called shortly after midnight.
“Have you looked at the street names?”
“Which ones?”
“In Miguel’s notes. They recur in the reports you just sent.”
I went back to the conference room.
The map was still on the table.
Daniel read out the first address.
I found it beside one of the red marks.
Then the second.
Then the third.
I sat.
“What was he researching?”
“Changes of ownership. Repeated purchases through different companies. Some records are public. Others appear to be notes he made while reviewing routine files at work.”
“Can they be verified?”
“Some already can. The rest will take longer.”
“I don’t want conclusions from a dead man’s notes alone.”
“Neither do I.”
The next morning, Maria found me in the library with the map, copies of Miguel’s pages, and coffee I hadn’t touched.
“You found the work folders.”
“Yes.”
She stood beside the desk.
“He didn’t bring work home much.”
“Did he tell you about these?”
“A little. He thought several transactions looked connected.”
“Did he mention Julian?”
“No name. He said he’d found something he needed to understand before he approached you.”
I looked up.
“He was going to approach me?”
She nodded.
“After his appointment. He wanted to know what was happening with his heart first.”
I let that settle.
A week.
Perhaps less.
A meeting we could have had if his body had given him a little more time.

Maria touched one of the copied pages.
“May I?”
I turned it toward her.
She studied a handwritten note in the margin.
“That’s how he worked. He’d write down what didn’t make sense, then go back until it did.”
“I seem to have inherited his unfinished questions.”
“No,” she said. “You have your own.”
She was right.
Daniel arrived at ten with a financial investigator he had engaged independently.
They didn’t bring a neat answer.
They brought verified filings, questions about transfers, and several companies whose ownership still needed to be traced.
But enough of the records connected to Julian’s office to make the next step clear.
Properties had been purchased near each supposed flashpoint.
Some sellers had accepted less than earlier offers.
Several sales followed threats or abrupt business closures.
The dates mattered.
So did the buyers.
I called the office manager and asked who had approved the payments linked to the companies we controlled.
She returned with signatures.
Julian’s.
Mine on two older authorizations.
I stared at those longest.
Daniel noticed.
“Do you recognize them?”
“Yes.”
“Did you read what you were signing?”
“I read what I was given.”
“And?”
“I trusted the summary.”
He didn’t reassure me.
I was grateful for that.
I instructed him to preserve those records too.
That afternoon, the testing service called Maria.
She asked me to join her in the sitting room.
Sophia was upstairs with Mrs. Donnelly, arranging dolls on the guest bed.
Maria put the call on speaker.
The woman explained the result, the limitations, and what the report would say.
The conclusion supported the relationship we had submitted for examination.
Sophia was my granddaughter.
After the call ended, Maria opened the report.
I looked at the figures once.
Then I looked toward the staircase.
I had already believed it.
Hearing it confirmed still changed the room.
“I want to provide for her,” I said.
“I know.”
“School. Medical care. Whatever she needs.”
“We can discuss that.”
“And you shouldn’t have to go back to that apartment until—”
“Anthony.”
I stopped.
She placed the phone on the table.
“You’re her grandfather. You’re not suddenly in charge of us.”
“I didn’t mean—”
“You’re used to meaning something and everyone arranging themselves around it.”
I leaned back.
She continued before I could answer.
“I’m grateful. I want her to know you. But where she lives, where she goes to school, who takes care of her—that doesn’t become your decision because a report arrived.”
I nodded slowly.
“You’re right.”
“And you cannot promise her everything.”
“Why?”
“Because children believe promises. Even the ones adults make when they’re emotional.”
I thought of the park.
Tomorrow.
Maybe.
“I’ll ask first.”
“That would help.”
When Sophia came downstairs, Maria sat her between us.
She explained it simply.
Daddy had a mother and a father too. I was Daddy’s father.
Sophia looked at me.
“You’re big.”
“I’ve had more time.”
She considered that.
“Are you my grandpa?”
“Yes.”
She turned to Maria for confirmation.
Maria nodded.
Sophia took my hand.
“Then you can come to school again.”
“If your mother says it’s all right.”
Maria’s face softened.
“It’s all right.”
Sophia smiled and went back upstairs to rescue a doll she had left beneath a pillow.
No ceremony.
No speech.
I remained on the sofa, looking at my hand.
My phone rang.
The office manager.
Julian had requested an immediate payment to cover “security arrangements” in Queens.
I checked the amount and recipient with Daniel.
Then I refused it.
Julian called within minutes.
“You cannot leave those men unpaid.”
“What work did they perform?”
“They were available.”
“For an operation I stopped.”
“You’re embarrassing me.”
“You authorized them.”
“I kept things moving while you were occupied.”
“I’m occupied now. Explaining this to you.”
His voice became colder.
“Your father understood that a family survives because someone does what needs to be done.”
“Which family?”
He didn’t answer.
I looked at Maria.
She was watching from the doorway.
“The payment stays blocked,” I said.
Julian breathed out.
“Then decide what you’re protecting, Anthony. The people who built your life, or the people who arrived in it three days ago.”
