"My Billionaire Boss Held My Daughter. Then He Said Her Father’s Name." Chapter 7 — What He Tried to Tell You
Chapter 7 — What He Tried to Tell You
“He doesn’t want you there.”
Ethan stood across my kitchen table, his coat still on.
I had asked him to stop by after work so I could explain the meeting before he heard about it from someone else.
Lily was in her room, searching for a crayon she had somehow put inside a boot.
“Did he say why?” Ethan asked.
“He worked for your family. Apparently that was enough.”
His expression tightened.
Then he pulled out a chair.
“Where are you meeting?”
“At Maya’s office. Owen will be there.”
He nodded.
I had prepared myself for an argument.
His acceptance left me with nothing to push against.
“You’re not going to insist?”
“Would that make him more likely to speak?”
“No.”
“Then I won’t.”
I sat opposite him.
“What if he gives me something about you?”
Ethan looked at me steadily.
“Give it to Maya. Let her check it.”
It was the right answer.
I wished that made it an easy one to hear.
Martin Shaw arrived wearing a jacket with a broken zipper and carrying a grocery bag.
He looked at the windows before he sat.
Maya offered to lower the blinds.
He shook his head.
“I want to see who’s outside.”
Owen introduced us, then explained how the meeting would be documented. Martin agreed to an audio recording and gave his full name.
“I knew Caleb as Reed,” I said.
“He told me.”
My fingers tightened around my pen.
“What did he tell you?”
“That there was someone waiting for him. That he needed to sort this out before the baby came.”
I looked down at my notebook.
For years, I had carried those memories alone. Hearing another person speak about the baby Caleb had wanted made the room difficult to bear.
Martin set the grocery bag on the table.
Inside was a dented metal cash box.
“I used to keep this in my work van.”
He opened it.
There were invoices, folded papers, and a small black flash drive.
“Caleb brought these to me the morning he died.”
Owen leaned forward.
“What did he ask you to do?”
“Hold them until the next day. If he didn’t call, make sure someone outside the company saw them.”
“Did you?”
Martin rubbed his hands together.
“No.”
The word was quiet.
I waited.
“Richard called before Caleb’s body was even out of the car. Said there’d been an accident. Said company property might be missing.”
“How did he know Caleb had come to you?” I asked.
“I don’t know.”
“What did you tell him?”
“That Caleb had left some paperwork.”
Martin swallowed.
“He told me the documents were connected to an investigation into Caleb. Said if I passed them around, I’d make things worse for his family.”
“And you believed him.”
“I wanted to.”
I thought of Caleb’s grave.
“Why keep them?”

“Because Caleb didn’t act like a man who’d stolen something.”
Martin pushed the box away from himself.
“He acted like a man who’d finally worked out how to prove it.”
Owen asked him to explain Westbridge.
Martin had worked as a site supervisor for a redevelopment project financed through a company investment vehicle. He had approved deliveries, checked contractors’ work, and signed off on completed stages.
Several invoices in the box concerned work he said had never been done.
“I flagged them,” he said. “My report came back with different numbers.”
“Whose approval was on the revised version?” Maya asked.
“Richard’s office.”
Owen photographed the papers before placing them in separate protective sleeves.
“These are allegations we’ll need to test against the original records,” he said.
Martin nodded.
Then he turned to me.
“There’s something else.”
He handed me a folded sheet.
It was a printed email.
Ethan’s name appeared at the top.
The instruction was brief: Caleb’s access to the Westbridge project was to be terminated immediately. Any further concerns he raised were to be directed through Richard.
I read it twice.
Ethan hadn’t merely failed to listen.
He had closed the door Caleb needed to reach him.
“Was this before the accident?” I asked.
“Three days.”
Owen checked the date.
It matched.
Martin reached into the box again and took out a smaller envelope.
“Caleb asked me to keep this with the rest.”
My name was written across it.
Clare.
Without the “i.”
I couldn’t touch it at first.
Maya waited beside me while I opened it.
There were only a few lines.
If anything gets complicated, please don’t let them tell you I walked away.
I’m trying to get this in front of Ethan. I think once he sees the original records, he’ll listen.
I’ll explain everything when I come home.
No grand farewell.
No polished last words.
A man making plans for a tomorrow he believed he would have.
I put the letter down before my tears could fall on it.
“Why didn’t you find me?”
Martin lowered his head.
“I didn’t know where you lived.”
“You could have looked.”
“Yes.”
The answer was so plain that I had nowhere to put my anger.
“I should have,” he said. “I’m sorry.”
I looked at the box, the papers, the years he had kept them.
“Then help us now.”
He nodded.
“I will.”
Ethan was waiting outside Maya’s building when we finished.
He hadn’t come upstairs.
He stood beneath the entrance canopy with his hands in his coat pockets.
“Do you want me to leave?” he asked.
I took the printed email from my bag.
“Did you send this?”
He read it.
“Yes.”
“Richard told you Caleb had stolen documents.”
“Yes.”
“So you made Richard the only person Caleb could speak to about the documents.”
Ethan stared at the page.
“That’s what I did.”
“Do you understand how that looks?”

“I do.”
“He was trying to get to you.”
“I know.”
I shook my head.
“You know now. You didn’t let yourself know then.”
He lowered the paper.
A car passed behind us, its tires hissing through melted snow.
“I don’t have a defense for that decision,” he said.
I had expected explanations. Pressure. Misleading information. The weight of running a company.
He offered none of them.
“Give Owen the records that led you to send it,” I said.
“All of them.”
“Even if they make you look worse.”
“Yes.”
I searched his face.
“You can’t investigate your uncle and leave yourself out.”
“I won’t.”
He handed the page back.
“Was there anything from Caleb?”
I showed him the letter.
He read it without taking it from me.
At the last line, his mouth tightened.
“He still thought I would listen.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked away.
I let him.
Two evenings later, Owen confirmed that Ethan had delivered his correspondence, calendar entries, and the records he had relied on when removing Caleb.
The material included more than I had asked for.
Maya told me that without telling me to trust him.
I appreciated the distinction.
That night, Ethan came over to help Lily plant bean seeds in a paper cup.
He had brought the seeds after she asked whether beans grew underground like potatoes.
He spread newspaper on my table, let her spill the soil, and did not take over when she planted all three seeds in one hole.
After she went to bed, he stayed to clean up.
“I don’t want you to feel you have to keep coming because of Caleb,” I said.
He folded the newspaper.
“I come because you let me.”
I stood beside him.
“And if I stopped?”
“I’d respect it.”
His eyes met mine.
“I wouldn’t like it.”
The honesty caught me somewhere I had been trying to protect.
I touched his wrist.
He went still.
For a moment, I thought of how grief could make people reach for things they weren’t ready to hold.
Then I thought of the records he had handed over.
The arguments he hadn’t tried to win.
The way he asked before picking up my daughter.
I moved closer.
“Claire,” he said softly.
“I know who you are.”
His gaze dropped to my mouth, then returned to my eyes.
I kissed him.
He waited for that first contact before his hand settled against my waist.
The kiss was careful until I leaned into him.
Then it wasn’t.
When we pulled apart, my hand was still wrapped around his wrist.
Neither of us spoke.
My phone vibrated on the counter.
Owen’s name appeared.
I answered, still standing close to Ethan.
“Martin’s former employer received a call today,” he said. “They’ve withdrawn the part-time work they’d offered him.”
“From whom?”
“He says the caller mentioned his meeting with you.”
Ethan’s hand fell from my waist.
Someone knew Martin had opened the box.
