"My Billionaire Boss Held My Daughter. Then He Said Her Father’s Name." Chapter 3 — They Came for My Daughter
Chapter 3 — They Came for My Daughter
When the laboratory called six days later, I was on the kitchen floor trying to convince Lily that two matching socks were not an unreasonable demand.
“Is this Claire Bennett?”
I stood so quickly she protested.
“Yes.”
The caller verified my details, then explained that our reports were available through the secure portal. She could arrange a conversation with a specialist if I needed help understanding them.
I opened the email with my free hand.
There was cautious language. Numbers. A conclusion I read three times.
The findings strongly supported the stated biological relationship.
Ethan Callahan was Lily’s uncle.
I sat back down.
Lily climbed into my lap with one yellow sock and one blue one.
“Mommy, did you lose?”
I laughed, and the sound broke halfway through.
“No, sweetheart.”
I kissed her hair.
“I think we found someone.”
Ethan was waiting in the small conference room I had requested.
I had chosen it because I wanted a table between us and because I couldn’t bear to walk into his office expecting another version of the morning that had changed everything.
He stood when I entered.
“You received it?”
“Yes.”
He held his own copy but didn’t offer it to me.
We already had the same information.
“What happens now?” I asked.
He took a moment before answering.
“That depends on what you want.”
“I want to know what happened to Caleb.”
“So do I.”
“And I want Lily to have a chance to know you. Slowly.”
His gaze dropped to the report.
When he looked up again, I saw the effort it took him to speak normally.
“I’d like that.”
He didn’t ask for weekends. Photographs. A place in her life I hadn’t offered.
That made it easier to continue.
“I haven’t told her yet.”
“There’s no hurry.”
“There is with the rest of it.”
His expression sharpened.
“The message,” I said. “What happened between you and Caleb?”
Ethan sat opposite me.
“I removed him from a project.”
“Why?”
“I believed he had taken confidential material and was using it to pressure the company.”
“Was he?”
“I thought so at the time.”
“That isn’t the same answer.”
“No.”
I laid my hands flat on the table.
“Did you listen to him?”
His silence told me before his words did.
“Not enough.”
Caleb had once told me his brother could decide who you were before you finished a sentence.
I had thought it was ordinary family bitterness.
Now I remembered how quietly he had said it.
“Was the project called Westbridge?”
Ethan stared at me.
“Where did you hear that name?”
“Caleb mentioned it. Once. He said he needed to settle something connected to Westbridge.”
“Do you have that in writing?”
“I’ll check.”
“Claire—”
It was the first time he had used my first name.
I looked up.
“Please don’t delete anything.”

“I haven’t deleted anything in almost four years.”
The answer hurt us both.
Before we left, we agreed the test results would remain private.
Ethan would tell only his uncle, Richard, because Richard had handled much of the family’s contact with Caleb after the brothers’ dispute.
I hesitated.
“Why does he need to know about Lily?”
“He may know something that helps us find Caleb.”
“Then tell him only what he needs.”
Ethan nodded.
I believed he meant to keep that promise.
By Thursday morning, someone else knew.
My supervisor called me into a glass-walled meeting room before I had taken off my coat.
A woman from human resources sat beside him.
There was a printed complaint on the table.
It accused me of using company resources for personal purposes, seeking preferential treatment, and approaching senior management with an unverified claim of family connection.
I read the last phrase twice.
“Who submitted this?”
“The reporting process is confidential,” the HR representative said.
“Then please record that the claim is factually wrong.”
She uncapped her pen.
“Which part?”
I wanted to say all of it.
Instead, I went line by line.
I had brought Lily during a childcare emergency. I had not accessed restricted records. I had not requested money. I had used an employee benefit for which I was eligible.
“What family connection is being referred to?” she asked.
“That concerns my daughter’s private information. If there is a specific employment allegation, I will answer it.”
My supervisor shifted.
“Claire, being cooperative would help.”
“I am being cooperative. I’m asking you to distinguish my work from a rumor.”
The HR representative looked at him, then returned to her notes.
I requested a copy of the complaint and confirmation that my response would be attached.
She agreed.
At my desk, my hands began to shake.
I waited until they stopped before contacting Ethan.
Someone has filed a complaint mentioning Lily’s family connection. I have answered the employment allegations. We need to discuss who knows.
His reply came within a minute.
I’m in an external meeting until two. Keep the documents. I will call you as soon as I’m free.
At eleven, Richard Callahan’s assistant appeared beside my desk.
“Mr. Callahan would like a word.”
“Ethan?”
“Richard.”
I should have refused.
Instead, I thought about Caleb.
Richard might have known where he had gone. Might have heard something Ethan hadn’t.
I took my notebook and followed her.
Richard occupied a conference room on the executive floor. A woman in a navy suit sat beside him, her briefcase open.
He stood with a practiced smile.
“Claire. Thank you for coming.”
“You wanted to discuss Caleb?”
“Among other things.”
The woman introduced herself as counsel to the family.
Not my counsel.
I wrote down her name.
Richard noticed.
“You needn’t make this adversarial.”
“I’m making a note.”
He gestured toward the chair.
“We were surprised to hear about the child.”

“My daughter’s name is Lily.”
“Of course.”
He slid a document across the table.
“We’d like to offer some stability.”
The first page named a sum large enough to cover years of rent.
For one dangerous moment, I saw a safe apartment. Reliable childcare. Boots bought before the old ones split.
Then I read the conditions.
Confidentiality. No public statements concerning Caleb. No further approaches to members of the Callahan family.
And, halfway down the third page, a provision requiring me to discontinue attempts to locate or contact Caleb Reed or Caleb Callahan through third parties.
I looked up.
“Why?”
Richard folded his hands.
“Caleb made his wishes quite clear.”
“To whom?”
“To his family.”
“Not to me.”
“People sometimes find it difficult to end relationships directly.”
Heat rose into my face.
“He knew I was pregnant.”
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“We cannot correct every unfortunate choice he made.”
I took out my phone.
The lawyer leaned forward.
“What are you doing?”
“Keeping a copy of what you’ve asked me to sign.”
“This is a confidential discussion.”
“I haven’t agreed to confidentiality.”
I photographed the pages containing the conditions, then sent the images to my personal email.
Richard watched me with a new expression.
“You’re employed here, Ms. Bennett. It would be wise to consider how your conduct may be interpreted.”
I put the phone down.
“Are you offering help, or threatening my job?”
“We’re trying to avoid unnecessary distress.”
“Then remove the condition about finding Caleb.”
Neither of them spoke.
That silence frightened me more than the money.
I stood.
“I’ll have my own lawyer review anything concerning my daughter.”
Richard rose too.
“Before you leave, you should understand that Lily’s welfare is not solely a matter of your feelings.”
I went still.
He glanced toward the complaint lying beside his folder.
“You left a three-year-old unattended in an office building. There may be legitimate concerns about the arrangements you make for her.”
I knew then why he had brought the complaint.
Not to discuss my work.
To show me he had something he could use.
I picked up my notebook.
“My childcare failed for several minutes. I reported exactly what happened. If you have concerns, put them in writing with your name attached.”
The door opened behind me.
Ethan stood in the doorway, still wearing his overcoat.
Grace was just behind him.
His eyes moved from my face to the papers on the table.
“What meeting is this?”
“A private family matter,” Richard said.
“Then why is Claire standing here looking afraid?”
“I’m not signing,” I told Ethan.
He came closer.
“Signing what?”
Richard reached for the document.
I caught the top page before he could take it and pushed the whole agreement toward Ethan.
My finger landed on the clause I had photographed.
“He didn’t come here to acknowledge her,” I said. “He came here to make us stop looking.”
Ethan read the line.
Then he looked at his uncle.
“Why would you need her to stop looking for my brother?”
Richard reached for the papers again.
