"My Billionaire Boss Held My Daughter. Then He Said Her Father’s Name." Chapter 1 — The Child in His Arms
Chapter 1 — The Child in His Arms
I pushed open my billionaire boss’s office door, ready to beg for my job, and found my daughter asleep against his chest.
For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
Ethan Callahan sat behind his desk with his head tipped back and his eyes closed. His charcoal suit jacket covered Lily from her shoulders to her pink sneakers. One of her hands gripped his white shirt. His arm rested across her back.
The man who had dismissed a division director before nine that morning was holding my three-year-old as though someone had entrusted him with the most important thing in the building.
“Ms. Bennett.”
His assistant caught up with me in the doorway.
I barely heard her.
“He asked me to find you,” she whispered. “Your manager said you were still in the audit meeting.”
My daughter’s cheeks were blotchy from crying.
I took a step forward.
Ethan opened his eyes.
Every apology I had prepared crowded into my throat.
“Mr. Callahan, I’m sorry. I know she shouldn’t be here. There was an emergency this morning, and I thought—”
“She was cold.”
His voice was low and rough with sleep.
He looked down at Lily, then back at me.
“She’s warm now.”
I had spent six months working at Callahan Global Holdings and had never heard anyone describe Ethan Callahan as kind.
Demanding, yes. Brilliant. Occasionally terrifying.
Kind had never come up.
“I’ll take her.”
“Of course.”
He straightened carefully. Lily tightened her fist in his shirt, making a small, unhappy sound.
“Lily,” I whispered, touching her hair. “Mommy’s here.”
Her eyes opened halfway.
“Mommy?”
“I’ve got you.”
Ethan eased her into my arms, supporting her head until I had her securely. His jacket came with her.
I almost handed it back.
Then I felt how warm she was beneath it, and held her closer instead.
“Thank you.”
He nodded toward the chair opposite his desk.
“Sit down before you fall down.”
I sat.
His assistant remained near the door.
“Would you like me to call someone?” she asked.
“No,” I said too quickly.
Someone meant human resources. Security. My manager.
Ethan looked at her.
“Water, please, Grace. And ask Ms. Bennett’s department to continue without her.”
When the door closed, he rested his forearms on the desk.
“Tell me what happened.”
I kissed Lily’s forehead before answering.
“My neighbor watches her while I work. She fell on the sidewalk this morning. They took her to the hospital.”
“Is she all right?”
“They think she injured her knee badly. She’s seventy-two.”
“And you had no backup.”
It wasn’t a question.
I shook my head.
Outside the windows, Chicago lay beneath a pale winter sky. Cars moved far below us, small enough to look harmless.
Everything inside this office cost more than anything I owned.
The desk. The chairs. Probably the pen beside his hand.

“I called two sitters,” I said. “One couldn’t come until this afternoon. The other didn’t answer. I have the quarterly review on my desk, and my manager said the team couldn’t afford another absence.”
“What did you tell your manager?”
“That my childcare had fallen through.”
“Did you tell him why?”
“Yes.”
Ethan’s expression changed, though I couldn’t have said how.
I hurried on.
“He didn’t know I brought her. That was my decision. Please don’t blame anyone else.”
“Who was watching her?”
“Jenna, from accounts payable. She offered to sit with her in the lounge while I attended the meeting. It was supposed to take twenty minutes.”
It had taken forty-seven.
At thirty, I had asked to leave. My manager had pointed to a discrepancy on the screen and told me to finish explaining it first.
By the time I reached the lounge, Jenna was standing beside an empty chair with Lily’s rabbit in her hand.
She had been called downstairs and asked another colleague to take over. Each had thought the other was still there.
Lily had gone looking for me.
“I should have left the meeting,” I said. “I knew I needed to check on her.”
“Yes,” Ethan said.
The simple agreement hurt more than reassurance would have.
I looked at Lily’s little hand resting against my collarbone.
“I won’t make that mistake again.”
He waited until I looked up.
“I found her outside the executive elevators. She told me her mother worked here, but she was crying too hard to give me your name.”
“She knows my name.”
“She knew ‘Mommy.’ At the time, that seemed sufficient.”
Something in his voice nearly made me smile.
Nearly.
“I brought her in here and asked Grace to find you,” he continued. “She fell asleep before we managed it.”
“And you fell asleep too.”
The words escaped before I could stop them.
His mouth moved slightly.
“I was up most of the night.”
Lily stirred.
“Rabbit.”
“It’s coming, sweetheart.”
I reached for my phone, then remembered the battery had died during the meeting.
Ethan picked up his desk phone.
“Grace, would you ask someone to bring Lily’s belongings from the employee lounge?”
He knew her name.
She must have told him that much.
I watched him replace the receiver, his movements precise and unhurried.
“Am I being fired?”
His eyes returned to mine.
“Not for having a childcare emergency.”
“For bringing her here?”
“We need to make sure it doesn’t happen this way again. That is a different conversation.”
I stared at him.
“I can make up the time.”
“Ms. Bennett, your daughter is asleep in your lap.”
“I know.”
“Then stop trying to negotiate with me.”
My face burned.
He leaned back, leaving some distance between us.
“How old is she?”
“Three.”
Lily shifted under his jacket. Her fingers curled around my blouse, exactly as they had around his shirt.

Ethan watched the movement.
“Does she always do that?”
“Hold on to people?”
He nodded.
“When she’s tired. Or worried.”
His gaze stayed on her hand.
I knew that look.
Not because I had ever seen it on him, but because I had seen it in my own reflection while passing the window of a store full of things I used to believe I would someday afford.
He was looking at something he had lost.
“Her father?” he asked.
I felt myself close up.
“He’s gone.”
Ethan’s eyes lifted.
“Gone where?”
“I don’t know.”
Most people accepted the first answer. They heard it as death or abandonment, depending on what they found easiest to imagine.
He waited.
“He left while I was pregnant,” I said. “Almost four years ago.”
“Did he tell you he was leaving?”
“No.”
The word came out sharper than I intended.
Lily made a small sound. I rubbed her back until she settled.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “It’s not something I talk about at work.”
“You don’t owe me an explanation.”
Yet he didn’t look away.
And perhaps because he had given my child back without argument, perhaps because he had asked about Mrs. Carter before asking about company policy, I told him one more thing.
“He said he would come back.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he looked at Lily again.
“My younger brother used to sleep like that.”
I glanced down.
“One hand clenched,” he said. “Even when he was a baby. Our mother used to put a finger in his palm so he could settle.”
My pulse stumbled.
I didn’t know why until he added, “He never liked being alone.”
Caleb had hated sleeping with his back to the door.
He had laughed when I noticed.
Old habit, he’d said.
“What was your brother’s name?”
Ethan’s expression softened in a way that made him look younger.
“Caleb.”
My arms tightened around Lily.
He noticed.
“Ms. Bennett?”
There were probably thousands of men named Caleb.
Thousands of younger brothers.
I knew that.
Still, my mouth had gone dry.
“What was his last name?”
Ethan looked directly at me.
“Callahan.”
