"“Come to My Ex’s Wedding.” The Mafia Boss Said Yes." Chapter 11 — This Time, Our Wedding
Chapter 11 — This Time, Our Wedding
One year later, I was standing on a chair, trying to reach a box I had told everyone not to put on the top shelf.
“Who moved this?”
Mia looked up from the cutting table.
“You.”
“That seems unlikely.”
“You said it would only be there until Monday.”
“Which Monday?”
“That was the part we didn’t establish.”
I pulled the box forward.
It was heavier than expected.
A hand appeared beneath it.
Then another settled against the back of the chair.
“Let go,” Ronan said.
I released the box.
He lowered it to the table and waited while I climbed down.
“You could have announced yourself.”
“You were conducting an investigation.”
“A serious one.”
“Yes. Your staff appeared terrified.”
Mia returned to her work, smiling.
Ronan looked around the studio.
Paper filled every available surface. Two additional artists worked near the window, and a row of completed orders waited beside the door.
We had outgrown the room.
I had finally admitted it.
The new lease was on my desk, unsigned until my accountant finished reviewing it.
Ronan had seen it.
He had not offered to buy the building.
That was one of several reasons I loved him.
The year had not been effortless.
Neither of us was particularly good at pretending.
He liked knowing where things stood. I liked being allowed to change my mind.
He could become very quiet when something troubled him. I could fill an entire room with words before admitting what I was actually afraid of.
We had learned.
Sometimes badly.
Once, after a long day, he arranged for a car to collect me without asking.
I came out of the studio, saw the driver, and called him.
“I could have wanted to walk.”
“I thought you’d be tired.”
“I am. You can still ask.”
He apologized.
The next time, he sent a message.
Would a car help tonight?
I said yes.
Another evening, he told me he would be unreachable for several hours and gave me no explanation.
By the time he called, I had developed six terrible theories and one unreasonable argument.
He listened.
Then he explained what he could, admitted what he should have told me earlier, and stayed on the phone until we had something better than anger between us.
His life still required precautions.
Some doors remained closed.
But when a decision affected me, I expected to be part of it.
He had learned that I meant what I said.
I had learned that disagreement did not have to become punishment.
As for Bennett, I had not spoken to him since the review.
Peter sent one final update after the current development proposal was withdrawn. The site assumptions were being reconsidered, and a different team would handle any future submission.
Bennett lost the position he had celebrated at his wedding.
I heard nothing official about his marriage.

I did not look for it.
The hotel record and his messages remained in a folder I rarely opened.
My arm healed.
Other things took longer.
There were still days when I tried on a dress and heard an old criticism before I recognized whose voice it was.
There were also days when I liked what I saw immediately.
Those had become more frequent.
Ronan never treated either kind of day as a test he needed to pass with the perfect compliment.
Sometimes he told me I looked beautiful.
Sometimes he asked whether I wanted another ten minutes.
Sometimes I changed.
Sometimes I didn’t.
The decision stayed mine.
He placed the rescued box on the table.
“What’s in it?”
“Samples.”
“You have twelve boxes labeled samples.”
“Yes. It’s a sophisticated system.”
“I can see that.”
He glanced toward the proof on my desk.
A wedding invitation lay beneath a sheet of tracing paper.
He picked it up.
“You’ve used this font before.”
I turned toward him.
“That is either a remarkable observation or evidence that you’ve spent too much time here.”
“The hotel anniversary dinner.”
“Yes.”
Mia looked over.
“I remember that order.”
“So do I,” I said. “Someone wanted dark lettering on dark envelopes.”
Ronan set the proof down.
“He’s learned.”
“Has he?”
“Some things.”
There was something in his voice.
I looked up.
He was watching me instead of the invitation.
Mia gathered a stack of papers.
“We need to check the delivery upstairs.”
I frowned.
“We don’t have a delivery upstairs.”
“We have a very complicated delivery situation.”
She gestured to the other artists.
They followed her into the back room.
The door closed.
I looked at Ronan.
“What have you done?”
“Nothing that requires a larger studio.”
“That is a narrow reassurance.”
He reached inside his jacket.
My breath caught before I saw the box.
Then he placed it on the table.
Small.
Dark.
Completely out of place among rulers, paper scraps, and an open invoice.
For several seconds, I stared.
“Ronan.”
He opened it.
The ring caught the afternoon light.
I put one hand against the edge of the desk.
He had stood in that same room a year earlier while I tried to withdraw an invitation I had made in anger.
Now his composure was almost identical.
Almost.
His fingers shifted slightly against the box.
I noticed because I had learned to notice him.
“Last time,” he said, “you asked me to attend someone else’s wedding.”
My eyes began to burn.
“This time, I’d like you to help me plan ours.”
I looked from the ring to his face.
A laugh escaped me.
He stopped.
“What?”
“You missed something.”
His brow tightened.
For perhaps the first time since I had known him, Ronan Varelli looked genuinely concerned about the structure of a sentence.
“I believe my intentions are clear.”
“They are. But I’d still like the question.”

He looked down at the ring.
Then back at me.
“You’re going to make me do this properly.”
“Yes.”
His mouth curved.
“Of course you are.”
He set the box on the desk and took my hand.
Then he lowered himself onto one knee.
My laughter disappeared.
The room became very quiet.
I could hear movement behind the closed door, followed by Mia whispering something sharp.
Ronan ignored it.
“Laurel Finch,” he said, “will you marry me?”
I looked at him.
At the man who had listened when I said no.
Who had stayed when I told him the ugliest part of my reason for inviting him.
Who had learned to ask before helping.
Who could frighten a room full of executives and still look uncertain while holding my hand.
I loved him.
Not because of Bennett.
Not because of what anyone might think when we entered a room together.
Because I knew what it was like to spend an ordinary evening with him. To argue, laugh, eat, work, admit something difficult, and still want him there when the day was over.
“Yes,” I said.
His shoulders eased.
“Yes?”
I laughed through the tears.
“Don’t make me repeat it. You’ll damage your mysterious reputation.”
He slid the ring onto my finger.
Then he stood.
I touched his face.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
“You’re sure?” he asked quietly.
“Yes.”
“I needed to hear that.”
“You can ask again tomorrow.”
“I may.”
“I may complain.”
“I expect that.”
I kissed him.
He put one hand at my waist and drew me closer.
Someone behind the door made a sound that was suspiciously like a sob.
I pulled back.
“Mia.”
The door opened.
She stood there with both artists crowded behind her.
“We were checking the delivery.”
“Very emotional delivery.”
“Extremely.”
Ronan’s hand remained at my waist.
Mia looked at the ring.
Then at him.
“Congratulations.”
“Thank you.”
She hugged me carefully, as though the ring might somehow fall off if she moved too quickly.
When she stepped back, I looked down at my hand.
It was strange how something so small could change the shape of an afternoon.
Ronan picked up the invitation proof.
“Now we can discuss ours.”
I took it from him.
“I’m choosing the paper.”
“Agreed.”
“And the lettering.”
“I assumed that.”
“And the fonts.”
He looked at me.
“We should review the options.”
“No.”
Mia laughed.
Ronan’s expression became resigned in a way I found deeply attractive.
“Very well.”
I set the proof down.
For years, I had imagined a wedding as the day I would finally feel chosen.
I no longer needed one to accomplish that.
I had a studio to move, a team to pay, a man I loved, and a life that already belonged to me.
The wedding would be something we made together.
That evening, we locked the studio and walked toward the restaurant where we had eaten after Bennett’s reception.
Ronan took my hand.
The ring felt unfamiliar between our fingers.
“Do we need new rules?” he asked.
“Probably.”
“Should I be concerned?”
“Only if you’re planning to choose black envelopes.”
“I wasn’t.”
“Good.”
He opened the restaurant door for me.
Inside, the woman at the entrance looked at our hands and smiled.
“Something to celebrate?”
I glanced at Ronan.
He waited for me to answer.
“Yes,” I said. “Our wedding.”
And for once, there was nothing in the sentence I wanted to take back.
