"THE NIGHT THE FALCONE EMPIRE DIED TWICE" Chapter 11 — A House Without Guards
Chapter 11 — A House Without Guards
Three months later, Lily brought two cups of coffee into the eastern garden.
“You’re due in Manhattan at eleven,” she said.
“I know.”
“Your lawyer called me because you weren’t answering.”
I checked the phone on the bench. Four missed calls.
She handed me a cup.
“You can’t ignore people into changing their minds anymore.”
“Apparently not.”
I was home under strict release conditions, with more interviews ahead of me and no passport in my possession. The irony had not escaped either of us.
Most of the Falcone accounts were frozen. Investigators had taken control of records I once paid men to conceal. The surviving legitimate companies were being separated from the rest under independent supervision.
I had surrendered my management positions, identified assets, and begun negotiating how much would go toward restitution.
None of it bought forgiveness.
Marco’s wife had refused my call. My driver’s widow had spoken to me for less than a minute. I had told her the truth about why her husband died.
She had asked why that truth had taken so long.
I had no answer she deserved.
Lily sat beside me.
“I signed the statement yesterday.”
“Everything?”
“The documents. Thomas. The knife.”
I nodded.
She had her own lawyer. I had offered to choose one for her and caught myself halfway through the sentence.
She had chosen someone I had never met.
“I know you’re still angry,” she said.
“I am.”
“So am I.”
We watched a gardener remove the last damaged branches from a tree near the wall.
“I should have let you control your own life,” I said. “Being frightened for you didn’t give me the right to take it away.”
She turned her cup between her hands.
“And I should have talked to you before I trusted someone who offered everything I wanted.”
“You did talk. I didn’t listen.”
Her eyes filled.
“That doesn’t make what I did all right.”
“No.”
She rested her head against my good shoulder.
I put an arm around her.
We sat that way until her coffee went cold.
Sophia appeared beneath the garden arch as Lily stood to leave.
She wore jeans and a pale sweater. Her hair moved in the sea breeze. Nothing about her resembled the woman who had tried so hard to become invisible in my house.
“Your lawyer is looking for you,” she said.
“I’ve been informed.”
Lily glanced between us.
“Then I’ll leave you to be informed again.”
Sophia waited until she had gone.
“I saw Thomas yesterday.”
He remained in custody. Camila did too. Their cases had become their lawyers’ arguments rather than my decisions.
“How was it?” I asked.
“He wanted to know whether I’d help him explain what happened.”
“And?”
“I told him I already had.”
She sat beside me.
“I gave the investigators every message. Every photograph. I told them what he said in the warehouse.”

“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
She looked toward the ocean.
“I still remember the brother I had before this. I don’t think that goes away just because I know what he did.”
I reached for her hand and stopped before touching it.
She noticed. She placed hers over mine.
“I received a job offer in London,” she said.
My fingers tightened once before I made them relax.
“What kind of work?”
“Investigations. A legitimate firm. They checked my references more carefully than your household agency did.”
“When would you leave?”
“Next month.”
I looked at our hands.
There were things I could still offer her. Money that had not been touched. A house. Connections.
None of them were what I wanted to ask.
“Have dinner with me before you go.”
She turned toward me.
“Is that a request?”
“Yes.”
“I’ve had dinner here several times.”
“This would be different.”
“How?”
I met her eyes.
“I’d like you to know I’m asking because I want to be with you.”
She was quiet for a moment.
“I want that too.”
I bent toward her slowly enough that she could choose the distance.
She closed it.
The kiss was gentle. Her hand rested against the scar beside my eye, and for once I did not try to turn something precious into a promise I could enforce.
From the terrace, Lily cleared her throat.
“Your lawyer,” she called, holding up my phone.
Sophia laughed against my mouth.
I answered the call.
Dinner happened that evening. Sophia went to London the following month.
We wrote. We called. She returned when she could, and I learned to ask about her days without asking who had been watching her.
I pleaded guilty to the offenses set out in my agreement with the prosecutors. My cooperation mattered, but it did not erase the crimes.
When the judge imposed a prison sentence, I listened without looking toward my lawyer for a way around it.
Sophia came to see me before I reported to serve it.
“I won’t ask you to wait,” I said.
“Good.”
Her eyes shone, but her voice stayed firm.
“You can ask me to keep talking to you.”
“Will you?”
She took my hand.
“Yes.”
There were years between that answer and the morning I came home again.
In those years, Lily moved into her own apartment, found work she liked, and visited when she chose. Thomas and Camila were convicted. The companies that survived no longer answered to a Falcone.
Sophia built a life in London. Our relationship grew through ordinary conversations and difficult ones, with neither of us pretending the past had disappeared.
When my release date arrived, she was waiting outside with Lily.
They argued about which of them would drive.
I had never been happier to hear an argument I wasn’t expected to settle.
That evening, we ate in a smaller house near the water. The Hamptons estate had been sold during the financial settlement. Lily brought bread. Sophia burned the first pan of vegetables and threatened me when I looked at the smoke alarm.
After dinner, Lily went home.
Sophia stayed.
Her work bag sat beside the bedroom door. She would return to London in a week. We had learned that loving each other did not require either of us to disappear into the other’s life.
The storm began after midnight.
Thunder shook the windows, and I woke with my heart racing. For a moment, I was twelve again, listening to people whisper that my mother had died and wondering what I should have done to stop it.
Sophia’s hand found mine beneath the sheet.
“I’m here,” she said.
I turned toward her.
“I know.”
Outside, rain struck the terrace. No guards stood beneath the windows. No radio crackled beyond the bedroom door.
My father’s empire had ended when I released the records. Thomas’s had ended on a wet platform, when the people he used refused to become what he expected.
I had survived both.
I had also lost the right to pretend survival made me innocent.
Sophia moved closer and rested her head against my chest.
At dawn, I woke to light across the floor and the smell of coffee drifting from the kitchen.
She had left the bedroom door open.
I got up and followed her.
For once, there was no one to summon, no territory to defend, and nothing waiting for me that had to be conquered.
There was a woman at the counter, pouring coffee into two cups.
She looked up when I entered.
“Good morning, Matteo.”
I kissed her and took the cup she offered.
Then I sat down beside her.
