"The Mafia Boss’s Stallion Chose Me" Chapter 1: The Stallion and the Maid
Chapter 1: The Stallion and the Maid
The first gun came out when the black stallion put his hooves through the windshield.
I stood beside the fountain with a wet broom in one hand and the other pressed against my belly. Six months pregnant, twelve dollars in my pocket, and three weeks into a job obtained with a false name. Getting shot beside a millionaire’s fountain had not been part of my escape plan.
“Put that away!” someone shouted.
The guard kept his pistol raised. The horse came down hard on the Range Rover’s hood, slipped, and scrambled backward, dragging the man who still held his lead rope.
There were fifteen men in that courtyard. They could probably clear a room of enemies before breakfast. None of them knew what to do with a frightened horse.
“If you shoot him,” a voice said from the terrace, “you had better save the next bullet for yourself.”
The pistol disappeared.
I had heard Lorenzo Falcone speak only twice before. Once to dismiss a visitor, once to ask for coffee. He had never needed to raise his voice.
He stood above us in a charcoal suit, watching his million-dollar Friesian destroy a vehicle worth more than my grandfather’s farm.
“Get the other rope,” a broad man ordered.
Raul Serrano, the security captain. I knew him because he had collected my identification on my first morning and never returned it.
Two guards moved toward the horse’s left side. Another approached with a syringe.
The stallion swung his head. Blood ran beneath his jaw.
That was when I saw the wire.
A short, twisted piece had caught beneath the halter. Every pull on the rope drove it deeper into the soft skin behind his jaw. They weren’t restraining him. They were hurting him.
“Stop pulling,” I said.
Nobody heard me over the shouting.
The horse kicked a stone planter apart. A fragment struck the fountain beside my shoe.
“Stop pulling on his head!”
Raul turned toward me. “Get inside, Nina.”
Nina Hart. Quiet temporary maid. No family, no trouble, no reason to look twice.
I had rehearsed her history on the bus from Albany until I could say it without thinking. Nora Hayes was wanted by men who bought other people’s mistakes and collected payment in flesh. Nina Hart could scrub floors and save enough money to disappear.
She could not watch a horse bleed while men congratulated themselves for making him worse.
“There’s something under the halter,” I said. “Look at his jaw.”
“I said get inside.”
The stallion jerked sideways. The rope slipped through the first guard’s hands. The second man fell, and suddenly there was nothing between the horse and me except a bucket.
“Nina, move!” Matteo Vieri shouted from the steps.
I dropped the broom.
Running would have meant turning my back, crossing wet stone, and hoping my aching hips could outrun a terrified animal. Instead, I eased away from the fountain and left him room to pass.

He stopped with his head high, nostrils stretched, looking directly at me.
My grandfather had taught me to read a horse before touching one. Watch the feet. Watch the mouth. Give him somewhere to go.
I could almost hear him from the doorway of our old Kentucky barn.
Don’t make fear do your thinking, Nora.
“Back away,” I told the nearest guard. “Slowly.”
He looked toward the terrace.
“Do it,” Lorenzo said.
I found a peppermint in my apron pocket. I kept them because the baby made me nauseous, and because some habits survived everything else.
The wrapper sounded terribly loud.
“Easy,” I whispered, opening my palm. “I see it, big boy.”
His ears moved toward my voice.
I kept my hand low. Didn’t reach. Didn’t step into him.
The stallion took one pace, then another. His breath warmed my fingers. He smelled the peppermint, touched my palm with his whiskers, and took it.
Behind him, a guard shifted.
“Stay still,” I said.
This time, everyone listened.
I stroked the horse’s shoulder before moving my hand up his neck. His skin jumped beneath my fingers, but he stayed. The wire had been looped through a broken fitting. I loosened the halter buckle, lifted the pressure away, and eased the sharp end out of his skin.
He flinched. I stopped.
“I know. Just a little more.”
When the wire came free, I lowered it where he could see it. Blood marked my fingertips.
The stallion let out a long breath and rested his head against my shoulder.
For a moment I couldn’t move. I had spent months avoiding hands, doors, questions. Now this enormous creature was trusting me with the part of himself everyone else had tried to control.
I put an arm around his neck.
“There you are,” I whispered.
Footsteps crossed the courtyard.
Lorenzo stopped several feet away. Up close, he looked older than the photographs I had seen, with silver at his temples and a scar beneath his lower lip.
He studied the wire in my hand.
“Balthazar,” he said.
The horse turned an ear but didn’t leave me.
“That’s his name?”
“Yes. Where did you learn to do that?”
“My grandfather rescued horses.”
“In Albany?”
The question came too quickly.
“Kentucky. I moved.”
His eyes settled on my face. Something in his expression changed, then vanished before I could understand it.
Matteo approached with a phone. He glanced at me and stopped speaking.
Lorenzo held out his hand.
“Tell me.”
“The agency couldn’t verify her placement. Raul ran a second check.”
My stomach dropped.
Matteo looked unhappy about what came next.
“Her name is Nora Hayes. She was living with Danny Russo. Hoxha’s people have been circulating her photograph.”
I tightened my grip on the broken fitting.
Lorenzo looked from the phone to me.
“Is that true?”
“My name is Nora. I haven’t lived with Danny in three months.”
“Why is Dritan Hoxha looking for you?”
“Danny owed him money. He decided I owed it too.”
Raul stepped forward. “We should hold her until we know—”
Balthazar lifted his head sharply.
“Nobody is holding me,” I said. “You can fire me. I’ll leave. But you’re not handing me over to him.”
My voice shook on the last word. I hated that they heard it.
Lorenzo looked at my belly, then at the blood on my hand.
“Have they hurt you?”
I thought of the apartment Danny locked from the outside. The clinic where I woke with a bruise inside my elbow. The men who called my pregnancy collateral.
“Enough that I came here,” I answered.
Matteo’s phone vibrated again.
Lorenzo didn’t look at it.
“She doesn’t owe Hoxha anything. Make that clear to everyone who works for me.”
“Lorenzo,” Matteo said quietly, “he won’t accept that.”
“Then he can tell me himself.”
He turned toward the house. “Move her things out of the servants’ quarters. The room beside the master wing has an inside lock.”
“I didn’t agree to move.”
He paused.
“Would you prefer to stay where Raul has the key?”
I looked at the security captain.
“I’ll carry my own things,” I said.
Lorenzo nodded once.
Then the gate motor started.
Matteo turned so abruptly his coat swung open.
Three black vehicles rolled through the entrance. Nobody at the gatehouse stopped them.
“Who authorized that?” Lorenzo asked.
Raul reached for his radio.
The first vehicle stopped. A man stepped out, looked straight at me, and raised his gun.
