"They Married Me to a Dying Mafia Boss" Chapter 10 — No More Bargains
Chapter 10 — No More Bargains
“I’m not accepting it.”
Adrian pushed Julian’s letter away.
I kept my eyes on him.
“You haven’t asked me.”
He stopped.
Miriam sat across from us, her pen resting above a blank page.
Adrian looked down at the letter again.
Then he turned toward me.
“What do you want to do?”
It was a simple question.
Julian had never asked it.
Harlan had asked only when he already knew which answer he intended to accept.
“I want those records given to the people reviewing my case,” I said. “I don’t want you changing your statement to buy them.”
Adrian nodded.
“Then that’s our answer.”
Miriam picked up her pen.
“We’ll preserve this communication and respond through counsel.”
“What if he destroys what he’s offering?” I asked.
“He’s identified materials relevant to an active investigation. We’ll make sure the people handling it know they exist.”
I looked at the personal note again.
You wanted to save her.
Julian had mistaken what Adrian and I were trying to do.
We had spent weeks getting our lives out of his hands.
We weren’t going to put them back there because he offered a softer grip.
The meeting took place four days later in a conference room at Adrian’s attorney’s office.
Julian had requested it after receiving our refusal.
His lawyer attended. So did Miriam and Adrian’s counsel.
Adrian arrived in his wheelchair, wearing a dark jacket over a soft shirt. His hands trembled slightly from the effort of getting ready.
Julian noticed.
Of course he did.
“You look better,” he said.
Adrian positioned his chair beside mine.
“You sound disappointed.”
Julian smiled at the attorneys, inviting them to dismiss it as family tension.
“I’m glad we can finally speak without people interpreting every word.”
“Then speak clearly,” I said.
His gaze settled on me.
“I brought something for you.”
He placed a folder on the table.
Miriam reached toward it.
Julian kept his hand on top.
“First, we need an understanding.”
Adrian’s attorney leaned forward.
“There will be no commitment to alter truthful information.”
“Nobody said anything about truth. I’m talking about preventing unnecessary damage.”
“To whom?” Adrian asked.
“To the family. The businesses. People whose livelihoods depend on you.”
Julian turned toward me.
“And Nora’s career. Surely that deserves some consideration.”
“It already has consideration,” I said. “It has a formal review.”
“You could wait months.”
“I waited three years.”
His mouth tightened.
I put both hands flat on the table.
“You don’t get to use that against me again.”
Julian lifted his hand from the folder.
Miriam opened it.
There were copies of correspondence from the old hospital investigation. One referred to an internal review of the disputed order that had never been included in the findings given to me.
Another raised concerns about Harlan’s account of the timeline.
I stared at the date.
They had questioned his story while I was still begging somebody to believe mine.

“Where did you obtain these?” Miriam asked.
Julian looked at Adrian.
“Your doctor trusted me.”
“He wasn’t my doctor when these were written,” Adrian said.
“No. But he was useful.”
Julian’s lawyer touched his sleeve.
He pulled away.
“I’m trying to resolve this.”
Miriam separated the pages.
“Are these all the materials you have?”
“There may be more.”
“Then identify them.”
Julian leaned back.
“You don’t seem to understand what I’m offering.”
“I understand,” I said. “You’re offering to give back something that should never have been kept from me.”
He looked at Adrian.
“You’re going to let her destroy everything over a hospital dispute?”
Adrian’s hands went still.
“You kept me in a bed while you sold what you could reach.”
“I kept the businesses running.”
“You kept people away.”
“You were barely conscious.”
“I was conscious enough to hear you.”
Julian’s expression shifted.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Adrian continued.
“You told Harlan another examination would cause problems. You told Walter I wouldn’t know if he stopped visiting. You stood beside me and discussed what would happen after I died.”
His voice weakened toward the end.
He stopped, took a breath, and began again.
“I heard you.”
Julian glanced at the attorneys.
“He’s recovering from a brain injury. His memory is—”
“Being checked against records,” Miriam said. “You know that.”
For the first time, Julian looked frightened.
Then he reached for the weapon he had saved.
“You think opening the books only hurts me, Adrian?”
Adrian watched him.
“I know where your money came from. I know who you paid. I know which people were frightened into signing contracts.”
“I know too.”
“You’ll lose more than you can afford.”
Adrian looked at me once.
Then back at his cousin.
“Give them the records.”
Julian stared at him.
“All of them,” Adrian said.
His attorney closed the folder containing Julian’s proposal.
“We’re finished.”
Julian stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.
I stayed seated.
He looked down at me.
“You were sleeping in a car when I found you.”
“Yes.”
“I gave you somewhere to live.”
“You gave me someone to be afraid of.”
His lawyer urged him toward the door.
This time, he went.
I didn’t follow.
Neither did Adrian.
The arrests came the following week.
They followed months of work begun before that conference-room argument: the business records, the medical review, the vehicle inquiry, the interviews.
Miriam called me while I was helping my mother choose between two sweaters.
“Julian is in custody,” she said. “Harlan too.”
I sat on the edge of my mother’s bed.
“What happens to Peter?”
“The investigators have been in contact with him. The protective arrangements remain in place.”
“And the records?”
“Additional materials were secured.”
I pressed my fingers against my eyes.
My mother held up the blue sweater.
“This one?”
I looked at her.
“Yes, Mom. That one.”

Adrian did not celebrate.
When I visited that evening, his attorney was leaving the room with a box of documents.
The records Julian had threatened to use against him were now part of his own cooperation.
“How bad?” I asked.
Adrian looked at the box.
“Bad enough.”
“Do you regret giving them up?”
“No.”
I sat beside him.
He reached for my hand.
“I regret needing this to understand why I should.”
Two weeks later, Adrian was discharged to the estate with professional support and a rehabilitation plan.
Briggs returned too.
The camera above the bedroom door was gone.
So were the locked cabinets that had made the room feel like Harlan’s property.
I stayed in the east wing for the first few nights, while my motel booking ended and the deposit on a small apartment cleared.
On my last evening there, Adrian asked me to sit with him in the downstairs library.
A folder lay beside his chair.
My stomach tightened before I could stop it.
He noticed.
“I’m sorry. I should have told you what it was.”
“What is it?”
“Everything Miriam requested about the ceremony. And the papers needed to untangle it.”
I opened the folder.
Julian’s assurances had concealed more than they had explained. The lawyers had found misrepresentations in the documents and serious questions about what had ever been valid.
Now there was a clear way to resolve the record.
“Your mother’s care is separate,” Adrian said. “The funds are held independently. You don’t have to stay here, visit me, or keep speaking to me.”
I looked up.
“You’ve already arranged that?”
“With your lawyer. You can reject it.”
“Do you want me to leave?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
He swallowed.
“I want you to know you can.”
I looked around the room.
At the books. The lake beyond the windows. The man who had finally stopped offering me a life I could only keep by remaining beside him.
“I don’t know what we become after this,” I said.
“Neither do I.”
“That scares me.”
“Me too.”
The next morning, I carried my bag down the stairs.
Adrian waited near the front door.
I kissed him.
Then I picked up my keys.
Nobody took them from me.
Nobody asked when I would return.
I walked outside, put my bag in my Honda, and drove toward an apartment whose lease carried only my name.
