"They Married Me to a Dying Mafia Boss" Chapter 8 — The Price of Staying
Chapter 8 — The Price of Staying
“How much time do we have?”
I was standing outside Lakeside Grill with my apron still tied around my waist.
“Less than we’d like,” Miriam said. “We’re taking steps to preserve the records. Peter’s copies help us identify what matters.”
“Can Julian just empty the office?”
“He’s been told the materials are relevant. Whether he obeys is another question.”
I looked through the restaurant window.
My manager was pointing at the clock.
“I have to go back inside.”
“Go. I’ll call when there’s something you need to do.”
For the next three hours, I carried plates and pretended my phone wasn’t burning a hole in my pocket.
A customer left seven dollars under a coffee cup.
Another complained that his eggs had gone cold.
By the end of the shift, I had enough cash to extend the motel room for two nights.
I counted it in the employee bathroom.
Then I opened my phone.
A photograph of me standing beside Adrian’s transport stretcher filled the screen.
The headline beneath it called me a disgraced nurse with a wealthy new husband.
Someone had posted my old employee picture beside the wedding photograph.
I hadn’t even known there was a wedding photograph.
The article quoted an unnamed family representative.
Adrian’s recovery had supposedly been disrupted by an unstable companion pursuing financial interests.
My mother’s name was included.
So was Hawthorn House.
I stopped counting the money.
I called the administrator before I called anyone else.
“Please don’t give information about her to anybody who contacts you.”
“We’ve already reminded the front desk.”
“Has anyone come in?”
“Not yet.”
Yet.
That was the word I carried with me to the hospital.
Adrian had been moved to a rehabilitation unit the previous day. His room had fewer machines and a wider door, though he still needed help getting out of bed.
He was sitting in a wheelchair when I arrived.
His phone lay on the table.
He had seen it.
“Who gave them the photograph?” I asked.
“I don’t know.”
“The only people there were Julian’s guests.”
His expression darkened.
“I know.”
I paced between the window and the door.
“They put my mother’s address in it.”
Adrian reached for his phone.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling Miriam.”
I stopped.
He watched my face.
“I’m learning.”
Despite everything, I almost smiled.
Miriam advised us against arguing with strangers online. She arranged a brief response confirming that Adrian was receiving independent care and that the claims about me were disputed.
Nothing more.
I wanted more.
I wanted the name of every guest who had laughed in the chapel.
I wanted Harlan’s face beside mine.
I wanted people to know how the truth had been stripped away from my old case.
Instead, I gave Miriam the article and the messages arriving in my inbox.
Then I put the phone facedown.

Adrian looked at my apron.
“You came from work.”
“Yes.”
“You could have called.”
“And missed your cheerful bedside manner?”
“I was going to ask if you’d eaten.”
“I had fries.”
“That’s not dinner.”
“Says the man who tried to negotiate with a dietitian.”
His mouth curved.
“She was inflexible.”
“She met you.”
He laughed once, then winced.
I moved toward him automatically.
He held up a hand.
“I’m all right.”
I stopped.
The old instinct was still there. Check. Adjust. Help before being asked.
But he already had a team caring for him.
I sat in the visitor chair instead.
“What happened today?”
“Stood for longer.”
“How long?”
He looked toward the clock.
“Long enough.”
I waited.
“Not as long as I wanted.”
“That sounds more believable.”
For a moment, he stared at his hands.
“I used to cross a room and people stopped talking.”
“You can still make a room uncomfortable from that chair.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
“I know.”
He looked up.
“I hate needing someone to tell me when to stop.”
“You spent eight months with nobody listening when you wanted them to stop.”
He went quiet.
I wished I’d said it more gently.
I didn’t wish I’d said something else.
The next morning, his therapist called me from the unit.
Adrian had tried to stand without waiting for assistance after taking a call about the warehouse. He hadn’t fallen, but the attempt had left him dizzy and exhausted.
When I reached his room, he was back in bed.
“What did you think was going to happen?” I asked.
He stared at the ceiling.
“I thought I could stand.”
“And then?”
He looked at me.
“Walk out. Get in a car. Go there?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
His jaw tightened.
“Because for one minute I wanted to do something without asking.”
The anger went out of me.
I sat beside him.
“I understand that.”
“I know you do.”
We stayed quiet until he reached for my hand.
“I’m sorry.”
“Tell your therapist.”
“I did.”
“Good.”
His thumb moved across my knuckles.
“You’re angry with me.”
“Yes.”
“But you came.”
“I can be angry and still come.”
He watched me with an intensity that made it hard to remember the argument.
“Why do you come, Nora?”
I looked at our hands.
“Because I want to see you.”
“As your patient?”
“No.”
“As your obligation?”
“No.”
He waited.
There was no tablet between us now. No long delay while he found the strength for a single word.
Just a question neither of us could hide behind.
“I don’t know what to call it yet,” I said.
“I do.”
“Then don’t.”
His expression changed.
I tightened my hand around his.
“I spent days wondering whether you could hear me. Now I’m still trying to understand who you are when you answer.”
“That’s fair.”
“And I don’t want you mistaking gratitude for something else.”
“I’m grateful to Beth too.”
I looked at him.
“I don’t wait all afternoon for Beth to open the door.”
My face warmed.
“That’s a terrible argument.”
“It’s the one I have.”
He lifted my hand slowly and pressed his mouth to my fingers.
The contact was gentle.
Deliberate.
I moved closer.
“Adrian.”
“If you don’t want this, tell me.”
“I want it.”
He looked at my mouth.
I leaned in before either of us could turn it into another negotiation.
His lips were warm. The kiss was careful at first, then less uncertain when I touched his face.
He didn’t pull me closer.
He let me choose the distance.
When I sat back, his hand remained around mine.
“I still don’t know what to call it,” I said.
“Neither do I.”
“You said you did.”
“I was trying to sound convincing.”
I laughed, and he smiled as though he had accomplished something difficult.
That afternoon, Miriam called.
The warehouse records had been preserved before the clearing began. The sale could continue to be disputed, but the documents themselves were no longer sitting within Julian’s reach.
Among the invoices was a vehicle maintenance request.
Adrian’s car.
The work had been arranged shortly before his accident.
I turned the phone toward him.
“Did you authorize this?”
He read the date.
Then the name of the person who had approved it.
Julian.
“No,” Adrian said.
He looked at the invoice again.
“My car wasn’t supposed to be there.”
