"They Married Me to a Dying Mafia Boss" Chapter 6 — The Man Behind the Money
Chapter 6 — The Man Behind the Money
“What didn’t you tell them?”
Tess didn’t answer immediately.
“Tess.”
“Harlan asked me to correct a time in my statement.”
“Which time?”
“When I saw you leave.”
I sat on the edge of the bed.
My bare feet touched cold carpet.
“You told them I was still on the unit.”
“I said I wasn’t certain.”
“You were.”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
During the investigation, I had repeated that I had already left when the disputed order appeared.
The hospital had questioned my memory.
Tess had questioned hers.
And Harlan had sounded absolutely certain.
“Why?”
“He said the system timestamps were complicated. That if I contradicted the preliminary report, I’d turn a review into an accusation.”
“You watched them accuse me.”
“I know.”
“You watched them take my license.”
“I know, Nora.”
Her voice broke.
I felt no satisfaction.
For three years, I had imagined somebody finally admitting the truth. In those imagined conversations, I always knew exactly what to say.
Now I could barely breathe.
“Do you have anything besides your memory?”
“My old planner. I used to write down every shift change because payroll kept getting things wrong.”
“That proves your hours.”
“There’s something else. Harlan sent me an email before my interview.”
I opened my eyes.
“You kept it?”
“I forwarded it to my personal account. I was scared.”
“Don’t delete anything. Don’t edit anything. Don’t send it around.”
“I wanted to send it to you.”
“Send it to my lawyer. I’ll ask her how.”
Tess started apologizing again.
I stopped her.
“You can tell the truth now. That’s what I need.”
I called Miriam.
She arranged a meeting the next morning and told Tess how to preserve what she had.
Then I put my phone on the bedside table.
I didn’t sleep.
At nine, Tess walked into Miriam’s office carrying a handbag I remembered from the hospital.
She looked smaller than she had in uniform.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
I pulled out a chair.
“Sit down.”
Miriam guided the conversation.
Dates. Locations. Who had said what. What Tess remembered independently and what she had later read.
I watched her hands while she spoke.
They shook when she opened the email.
The message didn’t say, Lie about Nora Bennett.
It referred to an agreed timeline and instructed Tess to avoid creating confusion about staff departures until the technical review was complete.
Attached was a draft statement.
One paragraph placed me on the unit after Tess remembered seeing me leave.
“He wrote this?” Miriam asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you tell the reviewers it was his draft?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He said everybody prepared statements that way.”
Miriam took notes.
“This needs independent verification,” she said. “We’ll request the underlying records and determine what can still be obtained.”
“So it doesn’t prove it,” I said.
“It gives us something concrete to investigate. That matters.”

Tess looked at me.
“I should have done it then.”
“Yes,” I said.
She lowered her head.
I had no kinder answer.
Before leaving, she handed Miriam the planner and explained which entries she recognized. Miriam recorded what she received and arranged to preserve the email properly.
For the first time, the old case contained something I hadn’t been forced to defend.
Something someone else would have to explain.
At the hospital, Reyes found me near Adrian’s room.
“He’s had a tiring morning.”
“Should I wait?”
“He wants to see you. Just don’t let him turn it into a meeting.”
“Is that a professional concern or a personality assessment?”
“Both.”
Inside, Adrian had a tablet supported beside him and a therapist’s exercise sheet on the table.
He looked annoyed with both.
“I heard,” he said.
“What did you hear?”
“Lawyer. Old case.”
“Miriam told you?”
He nodded.
I sat beside him.
“There’s a witness who remembers me leaving before the order appeared. She has an email Harlan sent her.”
His gaze stayed on my face.
“Good.”
“It’s a start.”
“Yes.”
I looked at the gold ring still on his finger.
It seemed strange now. A prop from a cruel ceremony, resting on the hand that had helped stop Harlan.
Adrian followed my gaze.
“Hurts?”
“The ring?”
“Remembering.”
I swallowed.
“Yes.”
He shifted his hand closer.
I took it.
He didn’t offer a speech about getting my life back.
He sat with me while I tried not to cry.
After a while, he spoke.
“Julian. Money.”
I straightened.
“What about it?”
He looked toward the tablet.
Speech came more easily that afternoon, but only in short stretches. We used the screen when he needed longer answers.
Before the accident, he had discovered payments leaving a warehouse company he controlled.
Vendors he didn’t recognize.
Services nobody could explain.
“Julian approved them?”
A nod.
“Did you confront him?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
He typed slowly.
The day before.
I waited.
He added that he had intended to remove Julian’s access and have the accounts reviewed.
“Does anyone else know that?”
Adrian named his former finance director.
Miriam had already begun trying to locate him.
It was a lead, not proof of what happened on the road.
Still, it explained why Julian might have feared Adrian waking up.
“Why didn’t you have the payments investigated sooner?”
Adrian watched me.
Then he typed another sentence.
Because I thought he knew better than to steal from me.
I looked at him for a long time.
“That’s what surprised you?”
His expression tightened.
“The stealing?”
He withdrew his hand slightly, but I didn’t release it.
“What did those companies do, Adrian?”
“Freight. Storage.”
“And the rest?”
He looked toward the door.
“There were things,” he said.
“Illegal things?”
“Yes.”
The answer came without decoration.
I appreciated that.
I hated that I appreciated it.
“Threats?”
He nodded.
“Did you order them?”

Sometimes.
The word appeared on the screen.
I let go of his hand.
He didn’t try to catch mine.
Outside, a cart rattled down the hallway. Somewhere, someone laughed.
The hospital kept moving while I reconsidered the man in front of me.
“You knew what Julian was like,” I said.
“I knew… what he did.”
“But you thought he would only do it to other people.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
When he opened them, he typed.
Yes.
I stood and walked to the window.
I had spent days protecting him from people who treated his life as an asset.
That didn’t make everything he had done disappear.
Behind me, he struggled to speak.
“Nora.”
I turned.
“Don’t tell me you had no choice.”
He shook his head.
Then he typed again.
I had choices.
I watched the words appear.
I made bad ones.
It would have been easier if he had lied.
I could have hated the lie and left.
Instead, he sat there, too weak to stand, admitting something his money had once allowed him to avoid.
“I don’t know what to do with this,” I said.
He nodded once.
He wasn’t asking me to forgive him.
Not yet.
I returned to the chair but didn’t sit.
“The information you give Miriam can’t stop at Julian.”
Adrian looked up.
“If the records lead to someone you protected, you let her follow them.”
“Yes.”
“If they lead to you, you don’t make them disappear.”
His eyes held mine.
I could see the effort it cost him to stay focused.
This time, I waited for a full answer.
“They follow them,” he said.
I sat down.
It wasn’t absolution.
It was the first condition under which I could stay.
Adrian reached toward the tablet.
He opened the document where Miriam had begun listing records to request.
Beside one company name, he added another location.
A warehouse office on the South Branch.
“What’s there?”
He typed with one finger.
Original files.
Then he looked at me.
“Tell her.”
I took out my phone.
He watched while I sent the message.
For years, he had decided which truths people were allowed to see.
This one had just left his hands.
