"They Married Me to a Dying Mafia Boss" Chapter 3 — The Question He Answered
Chapter 3 — The Question He Answered
I put the pen down.
“I want to read it properly.”
“You have tonight.”
“I want a copy.”
Julian considered me, then opened the folder and removed one page from the back.
“You can keep these.”
“What did you take?”
“An administrative attachment.”
“Does it refer to anything I’m signing?”
His smile thinned.
“You’re making a simple arrangement difficult.”
“I’ve signed things I didn’t understand before.”
For a moment, I thought he would ask about the hospital.
Instead, he tapped the remaining pages.
“Then take your time. Until noon.”
He left.
I photographed every page he had given me.
Then I photographed my notes and sent them to the email account I used for job applications. I kept the originals in my bag.
Adrian lay motionless beside me.
“I don’t know whether you heard that,” I said. “But I’m not signing tonight.”
His finger didn’t move.
I waited without asking again.
The first response had cost him visible effort. I couldn’t turn his exhaustion into a test he had to pass whenever I felt afraid.
At seven, Briggs brought me the name and office number of Isabel Reyes.
“She remembers him,” he whispered.
“You called?”
“I asked whether she would speak to someone who has concerns.”
“What did she say?”
“That I should have called sooner.”
I looked at him.
He held my gaze.
“I told her that too.”
I called from the bathroom with the shower running.
Reyes listened without interrupting while I described what I had observed. When I told her my name, there was a brief silence.
“Nora Bennett from Mercy Ridge?”
“Yes.”
“I know the case was discussed in the hospital system. I don’t know enough about it to judge you.”
It was the fairest thing anyone in a white coat had said to me in three years.
“I’m not asking you to believe my conclusions,” I said. “I’m asking you to examine him.”
“Can you meet me tomorrow?”
“I’m supposed to visit my mother in the morning.”
“Near Hawthorn House?”
“Yes.”
“There’s a café across the street. Ten o’clock.”
Before we ended the call, she added, “Don’t change his medication or equipment. What you’ve described needs proper assessment.”
“I haven’t touched either.”
“Good. Bring what you have.”
The next morning, Julian’s driver took me to Hawthorn House.
My mother was folding napkins in the activity room.
She looked up when I sat beside her.
“You’re dressed nicely.”
I was wearing jeans and my least faded sweater.
“Thank you, Mom.”
She studied my face.
“Did you get enough sleep?”
I almost laughed.
Even when she wasn’t sure who I was, she knew when I was tired.
“Not much.”
She gave me a napkin.
“Here. Help me finish.”
For fifteen minutes, we folded paper squares together.
Then I kissed her cheek, told the receptionist I was getting coffee, and crossed the street.

Reyes waited in a corner booth.
She was a compact woman with dark hair pulled back from her face. No white coat. No reassuring speech.
“Show me.”
I handed her the printed notes I had made from my photographs.
She read them carefully.
“These are observations,” she said. “They don’t establish what caused his condition.”
“I know.”
“But repeated responses to instructions matter. So do differences between what someone observes and what gets documented.”
She turned another page.
“Who can authorize access to his records?”
“Julian controls everything. He says I’m his wife when he wants me in a photograph and nobody when I ask a question.”
“Do you have the marriage documents?”
“Only what he let me keep.”
I showed her the proposed statement.
Her expression hardened.
“Don’t sign this without independent legal advice.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“I can contact an attorney I trust. We need to establish the actual arrangements, then obtain records and an examination through proper channels.”
“And if Julian refuses?”
“Then that refusal becomes something your attorney can address. But I need you to understand that a response doesn’t mean Adrian can safely get up or suddenly speak normally.”
“I understand.”
She wrote her direct number on the back of a receipt.
“If there’s an immediate threat to his safety, call emergency services. Don’t wait for me to return a message.”
I folded the receipt into my pocket.
For the first time since the chapel, I had a plan that involved someone Julian hadn’t chosen.
When I returned, Briggs met me in the entrance hall.
“Mr. Voss is waiting in his office.”
“Tell him I’ll come down.”
He read my face.
“Did she help?”
“Yes.”
I handed him Reyes’s number.
“She’s contacting an independent attorney. If something happens and I can’t call, you call her. An emergency, you call for emergency help first.”
He folded the paper.
“I understand.”
Upstairs, I pulled the chair close to Adrian.
“I have to ask you something,” I said. “But first we need to make sure I understand your answers.”
His hand lay uncovered.
I placed my finger against his.
“Press once for yes. If the answer is no, don’t press. We’ll repeat it to check.”
It was imperfect. Silence could mean no, fatigue, or no response at all.
I would not pretend otherwise.
“Is your name Adrian?”
After a long pause, pressure.
“Is your name Walter?”
Nothing.
I asked again in a different order, giving him time between questions.
The same answers.
Then I told him I would ask for a no by having him press after the word itself.
“Yes?”
Nothing.
“No?”
A faint movement.
I repeated the sequence until I had enough consistency to stop doubting every answer.
“Can you hear what people say in this room?”
Yes.
I closed my eyes briefly.
“Do you want Dr. Harlan to be the only doctor deciding your treatment?”
No.
“Do you want an independent doctor to examine you?”
Yes.
My throat tightened.
“Do you want Julian deciding who gets to see you?”
No.
I looked toward the door.
There was one question I couldn’t bring myself to ask: how long he had been listening.
I laid my hand beside his.
“I spoke to Dr. Reyes. We’re going to try to get you help.”
For a moment, I felt nothing.
Then his finger pressed against mine again.
I hadn’t asked a question.
I stayed there until his hand relaxed.
At eleven forty, I went downstairs.
Julian sat behind Adrian’s desk.
Harlan stood beside the window.
The folder was open in front of them.
“Sit down,” Julian said.
“I’m not signing.”
He leaned back.
“What did the café serve with your coffee?”
My mouth went dry.
Julian watched me absorb it.
“Next time you leave my driver outside a building, remember he works for me.”
“I met an independent physician.”
Harlan turned from the window.
“You discussed confidential medical information?”
“I discussed my observations.”
“With someone who has never examined him in his current condition.”
“Then let her examine him.”
“No,” Julian said.
The speed of his answer settled something inside me.
“I also want an independent lawyer.”
He opened a drawer and took out another folder.
My name was printed on the cover.
Mercy Ridge Medical Center.
My old employee photograph stared up at me.
“I tried to offer you a respectable arrangement,” he said. “Your mother gets excellent care. You get a roof over your head. All you have to do is stop inventing problems.”
“Adrian responded to me.”
Harlan went still.
Julian looked at him.
Then back at me.
“What kind of response?”
“To instructions. More than once.”
“You’ve mistaken a reflex,” Harlan said.
“Then document it. Bring in someone else. Prove me wrong.”
Julian closed the hospital folder.
“I chose you because you needed money, Nora. Don’t confuse that with being indispensable.”
I stepped toward the door.
“We’re finished here.”
Harlan moved first.
“We need to assess him.”
I followed them upstairs.
Briggs stood at the end of the corridor. I met his eyes and shook my head once.
He looked at Harlan’s bag.
Then he walked away.
In the bedroom, Julian took up a position by the door while Harlan approached the bed.
“What are you giving him?” I asked.
“Something to keep him comfortable.”
“Is he uncomfortable?”
“You’re upsetting him.”
Harlan opened his bag and prepared a syringe.
“Explain what that is.”
“Move.”
I stepped between him and the bed.
“An independent physician is reviewing my concerns. Until someone explains this, you’re not doing it while I stand here.”
Julian caught my upper arm.
“Get out of his way.”
I pulled free.
“Don’t touch me.”
Harlan advanced, the syringe in his hand.
I reached back for the bed rail.
My fingers brushed Adrian’s.
“Move, Nora,” Julian said.
Something caught my hand.
I looked down.
Adrian’s fingers had curled around mine.
This time, he didn’t let go.
