"They Strapped My Daughter to a Gurney. I Made Them Answer." Chapter 2 — The Thing Inside Her Locket
Chapter 2 — The Thing Inside Her Locket
“Don’t discuss the files in front of anyone,” Owen said. “Let me speak to Claire.”
I put the phone against her ear.
She listened, then closed her good eye.
“Yes,” she whispered. “I still have it.”
Julian took a step toward us.
The security officer held out an arm.
“Give them some room.”
“That’s my wife.”
“And she asked you to stay back.”
Ruth guided the gurney into an examination room. I walked beside it, keeping one hand on Claire’s shoulder.
Vivian followed until Ruth stopped at the doorway.
“The physician needs to speak with her privately.”
“I’m paying for her care.”
Ruth’s expression didn’t change.
“You can wait outside.”
The door closed.
Claire began shaking so hard the mattress rustled beneath her.
I sat where she could see me.
“Do you want me here?”
She caught my sleeve.
“Please.”
A physician introduced herself as Dr. Patel. She explained each part of the examination before touching Claire and asked Ruth to remain.
When she reached for the blood pressure cuff, Claire flinched.
“We can pause,” Dr. Patel said.
Claire stared at the cuff.
“I know what it is.”
“I understand. We can still pause.”
I had spent thirty years around people who continued working while injured. I knew how easily competence could hide pain.
I hadn’t recognized it in my own child.
Dr. Patel asked about the restraints.
Claire swallowed.
“I pulled away when they tried to take the necklace. Julian told them I’d been violent at home.”
“Were you?”
“I knocked a glass off the counter when he grabbed me. He said he’d tell everyone I attacked him.”
The doctor made a note.
“What do you remember about the injury to your face?”
Claire looked at me.
“You don’t have to protect me from hearing it,” I said.
“He hit me beside the kitchen island. I fell against a cabinet. When I got up, he hit me again.”
I kept my hand still beneath hers.
Dr. Patel asked more questions, then arranged further checks for Claire’s injuries. Ruth documented the marks around her wrists.
Neither promised more than she knew.
Both listened.
While we waited, I borrowed Ruth’s pen and wrote down the time, the names on the transport workers’ badges, and the words I remembered hearing in the corridor.
“What are you doing?” Claire asked.
“Making sure I don’t forget anything.”
“You believe me?”
The question hurt worse than Vivian’s accusation.
“Yes.”
“Even though I didn’t tell you before?”
“Yes.”
She turned her face toward the pillow.
“I kept thinking I could handle it.”
I wanted to ask how long. I wanted names, dates, every missed call explained.
Instead, I moved my chair closer.
“We’ll talk when you’re ready.”
She opened her fist.
The locket lay against her palm, its engraved flower worn smooth. I had bought it at a craft stall in the Shenandoah Valley eighteen years earlier. Claire had insisted it was fancy enough for a princess.

“There’s a second backing,” she said.
I looked at her.
“A jeweler put it in last year. Slide your nail under the edge.”
I worked carefully. The inner plate lifted, revealing a black memory card smaller than my thumbnail.
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
“What’s on it?”
“Copies. Emails. Audit files. Some recordings.”
“What recordings?”
“Please just keep it away from him.”
The door opened.
Julian stood beside Ruth, who was trying to stop him.
“Claire, your mother doesn’t understand what you’ve taken.”
His eyes dropped to my hand.
He lunged.
I stepped behind the chair, closing my fingers around the locket. His forearm struck the chair back hard enough to tip it.
The security officer caught him at the doorway.
“That belongs to the company,” Julian shouted.
Claire lifted her head.
“You told everyone I was imagining it.”
He struggled once, then stopped.
His voice changed.
“Those are confidential records. She’s exposed herself to serious consequences.”
“Then speak to her lawyer,” I said.
The officer escorted him into the hall.
Ruth locked the door from the inside and apologized.
Claire watched the handle until it stopped moving.
“He always does that.”
“What?”
“Changes his voice when someone else comes in.”
I knew the voice she meant. I had heard it at Thanksgiving, at their wedding, on the phone when he told me how proud he was of her.
Owen arrived twenty-five minutes later carrying a laptop bag and wearing a sweater over a wrinkled shirt.
He looked at Claire’s face and stopped just inside the room.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.
“You told me not to confront him.”
“I told you to be careful. What he did is his responsibility.”
Ruth checked with Claire before allowing him to stay.
Owen asked me to describe where the card had been and who had handled it. He wrote down Claire’s account of removing it from her work materials and placing it inside the modified locket.
He didn’t plug it into his laptop.
“We’ll have someone preserve the original and make a proper working copy,” he said. “Until then, we leave it alone.”
“You’ve done this before?” I asked Claire.
“I met him three weeks ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She lowered her eyes.
“I thought if I called you, you’d come straight over.”
“I would have.”
“I know.”
There was no accusation in her voice. That made it harder.
Owen told us he had arranged for a specialist to receive the card later that morning. He also asked the hospital to retain the original documents supporting the proposed transfer.
Ruth returned with a patient advocate and a copy of the current care plan. Claire would remain for treatment and observation of her injuries. The disputed transfer was on hold pending review.
Claire read the page twice.
“I’m not going to Cedar Ridge?”
“Not under this plan,” Ruth said. “Your doctor will explain the next steps.”
Claire’s shoulders lowered.
I hadn’t realized she had been holding them near her ears.
By five, the hall had quieted. The Whitmores were no longer outside the door. Security knew Claire did not want them admitted.
I helped her drink a little water.
She winced, then managed a second sip.
Owen sat at the small counter, comparing the transfer folder with materials Claire had previously sent him.
His hand stopped on a page.
“What is it?” I asked.
He looked toward Claire.
“How long have you known Dr. Kessler?”
“Since Julian introduced us in February. Why?”
Owen turned the document.
It referred to a history of paranoid behavior, worsening over several months.
The earliest entry was dated eight months before tonight.
Claire stared at it.
“I never had an appointment that day.”
“Are you sure?”
She looked at me.
“Mom, that was the day of your shoulder surgery. I stayed with you.”
Owen checked the date again.
Then he set down his pen.
“Claire, we need to find out how far back this goes.”
