"No One Inside Is Safe" Chapter 7 — Everyone Saw His Eyes
Chapter 7 — Everyone Saw His Eyes
Owen lunged at Bell.
Bell shoved a chair between them and ran.
The chair struck the edge of the platform. Owen fell against it, caught himself, then turned toward the front row.
“Move back,” I shouted.
A woman froze with her daughter on her lap.
I grabbed the chair beside them and drove it across Owen’s path. He struck it hard enough to split the seat.
Lena pulled the woman away.
At the side of the platform stood the fire door I had checked while replacing a light fixture that morning. Beyond it was a short delivery corridor with another door at the far end.
Empty. Windowless. Two working latches.
I kicked the first door open.
“Owen.”
His head snapped toward me.
For a second, he looked frightened.
Then his mouth opened.
I backed into the corridor.
He followed.
Behind him, a guard raised his rifle.
“Don’t shoot toward the crowd!”
The guard hesitated.
I slammed the door into Owen’s shoulder, knocking him sideways, and slipped around its edge. Lena caught my sleeve and pulled me through.
Together, we forced it shut.
Owen hit the other side.
The latch shook.
I dragged a steel equipment cabinet across the doorway. Two residents joined me, pushing until its wheels wedged against the wall.
Only then did I turn.
Bell was gone.
His order remained.
Guards were closing the main doors.
“Open them,” Lena said.
Nobody moved.
The recording continued overhead.
“Nora Price. Collection refused on the ninth. Sedation authorized by Director Bell. Collection completed at fourteen-ten.”
A man near the back stood.
“Nora?”
Lena looked at him.
“Are you her son?”
He nodded.
“She’s in the clinic. She’s alive.”
His face changed so quickly that I had to look away.
The next voice on the recording was the dispatch operator.
“Recovery Three inbound. Voss party. Four candidates.”
Then mine.
“The people being delivered are not being told what happens here. I have the list used to register us. My brother’s injury was written down as a way to make me cooperate.”
A guard reached for the amplifier cabinet.
Eli spoke through the live microphone before he could touch it.
“Copies are with people outside this hall.”
He was lying.
There were two copies, and both were inside the city.
But the guard stopped.
I stepped forward.
“Tess Navarro is locked downstairs. She refused to sign. They restrained her anyway.”
“She survived a bite?” someone asked.
“Yes.”
A gray-haired woman turned toward the guards.
“My husband volunteered last winter. Bell told me he died from complications.”
Lena’s face tightened.
“What was his name?”
“Paul Mercer.”
“I’ll help you find his record.”
“You knew?”
The question silenced her.
Then Lena nodded.
“I knew there were donors. I believed they could leave. I stopped believing it, and I waited too long to act.”
The woman stared at her.

Lena let her.
Behind me, Owen struck the door again.
A guard flinched.
He was young, perhaps no older than Tess, with a split thumbnail and a wedding band hanging from a cord around his neck.
“Did Bell know that could happen?” he asked.
“Yes,” Lena said.
“He told us the treatment made them safe.”
“He knew missed doses could cause violent episodes.”
The guard looked at the other men.
Then he lifted the bar from the main door.
“Everybody out. Slowly.”
The oldest guard stepped toward him.
“You have orders.”
“I also have a wife in the third row.”
He pointed toward a pregnant woman clutching the back of a chair.
“If you want her locked in here with that, you can do it yourself.”
The older man didn’t answer.
The doors opened.
Eli stood beside the broadcast cabinet in the service passage, supported by a wooden cane someone had found for him.
Ben held the recorder.
June stayed behind a laundry attendant, gripping her apron.
“You were supposed to stay upstairs,” I told the children.
“Someone came looking,” Ben said.
Eli’s expression darkened.
“Bell’s people.”
He handed me Graham’s list and the memory card.
I put both inside my shirt.
The young guard followed us.
“Martin Shaw,” he said. “I know the donor wing.”
“Can you get us in?”
He held up his keys.
Lena took him aside long enough to tell him where Nora was.
Then we went downstairs.
We passed two nurses carrying a stretcher toward the stairs. One looked at Lena and said, “They’re ordering everyone back to their rooms.”
“Take your patients upstairs,” Lena answered.
“Bell—”
“Is not here.”
That seemed to settle something.
The nurse nodded and kept moving.
At the donor door, Shaw used his key.
The guard inside raised his weapon.
“Stop.”
Shaw kept his hands visible.
“We’re releasing the residents.”
“They’re patients.”
“Then where are their discharge papers?”
“Don’t make this difficult.”
Shaw stepped aside so the man could see Lena.
She carried the original nursing notebook against her chest.
“People upstairs have heard the records,” she said. “Put the weapon down.”
The guard looked past us toward the stairwell.
Voices were coming closer.
Residents.
Not an army. Not trained fighters.
People who wanted their family members back.
He lowered the rifle.
Tess was still in the chair.
Both wrists were restrained now.
When she saw me, she smiled.
It was a tired, furious little smile.
“You took your time.”
I crouched beside her while Shaw found the right key.
“Had to rearrange some furniture.”
“What happened?”
“People saw Owen.”
Her smile vanished.
“Is he dead?”
“No. Contained.”
She rubbed her wrists when the cuffs opened.
“Does contained mean safe?”
“No.”
“Good. Let’s keep using the right words.”
We opened the other rooms.
Six people came out.
One could barely walk. Another refused to leave until we found her shoes. A man with bandages covering both arms kept asking whether Bell had authorized this.
Tess took his hand.
“You can come with us anyway.”
At the end of the corridor, an alarm sounded.
The ceiling lights switched from white to red.
Steel shutters began descending over the connecting passages.
“Emergency containment,” a recorded voice announced. “Remain in your assigned zone.”
Shaw ran to a control panel.
His key no longer worked.
Above us, a second alarm joined the first.
Lower. Slower.
The sound carried through the floor.
An outer-wall warning.
Eli’s voice crackled from Shaw’s radio.
“Rowan, can you hear that?”
“Yes.”
“I’m on the perimeter channel. They’re reporting movement on the north road.”
“How many?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then another voice came through his open receiver.
“Hundreds. More behind them.”
A speaker outside the basement window began calling for help.
A child’s voice.
Then a woman’s.
Then a man shouting a name.
Shaw looked toward the window.
“That’s the behavioral range.”
“What range?”
“The speakers outside the north wall. They use them to test responses.”
Tess stared at him.
“And they’re still on?”
He tried his radio.
No answer.
Above us, the recorded voices kept calling.
Out in the darkness, something answered.
