"No One Inside Is Safe" Chapter 6 — They Called Her a Volunteer
Chapter 6 — They Called Her a Volunteer
I found Lena before the guards did.
She was in the recovery room with Nora, counting drops in an intravenous line.
“They took Tess.”
Her hand stopped.
“Where?”
“Lower level. East corridor.”
Lena closed her eyes briefly.
Then she pulled a key ring from her pocket.
“There are two doors before the donor rooms.”
“Can you open them?”
“The first.”
“And the second?”
She looked at Nora.
“The second isn’t supposed to lock from the outside.”
We went down through the laundry stairs.
Lena carried a supply tray. I pushed a linen cart with the inspection camera hidden beneath folded sheets.
At the first door, she used her key.
At the second, she rang a bell.
A guard opened it.
“Collection schedule’s suspended,” he said.
“Good. Then there’s time to examine the new admission.”
“Bell already saw her.”
“Bell doesn’t handle wound care.”
He glanced at the tray.
Lena waited.
Finally, he stepped aside.
Tess sat in a small room at the end of the corridor.
Her wrists had been secured to the chair arms.
An untouched consent form lay on a desk.
She looked at Lena.
“Do all volunteers get tied down?”
Lena set the tray aside.
“I’m removing these.”
The guard shifted in the doorway.
“You can’t—”
“She’s restrained against her wishes. Put your name on the chart if you want responsibility.”
He looked from Lena to Tess.
Then he backed into the corridor.
Lena unlocked one cuff with a key from the tray.
The other needed a different key.
“Of course,” Tess said.
I knelt beside her chair.
“Are you hurt?”
“Not yet.”
“Did they take blood?”
“A sample. They were waiting for me to sign.”
I looked at the form.
It promised food, shelter, and continuing medical care.
It said nothing about frequency, quantity, or the right to stop.
Tess leaned toward me.
“They know about Graham.”
“I know.”
“No. They know everything he told them. Old injuries. Blood groups. The time I cut my hand fixing the pump.”
She swallowed.
“He was waiting for one of us to get bitten.”
Footsteps approached.
Lena straightened.
Bell entered without a guard.
He looked at the open cuff, then at me.
“I expected you.”
I stood.
“Release her.”
“We’re trying to determine why she survived.”
“She can help you without being chained to a chair.”
“She can also leave before we learn anything useful.”
“That’s her right.”
Bell glanced at Lena.
“Perhaps you could explain how many people are depending on this work.”
Lena’s face had gone pale.
“I can explain informed consent.”
“You can explain Owen. You can explain the others who get another week with their families because we haven’t abandoned them.”
He turned back to me.
“Your brother is walking because this place exists.”
“My brother needed treatment. You don’t own him because you gave it.”
“And what do you own, Rowan? Three stolen boxes of medicine? A failing van? A rifle?”

He spoke softly.
It was worse than Graham shouting.
“The world outside does not care what you think anyone deserves. Here, we can still make choices.”
Tess lifted her restrained wrist.
“Apparently you make mine.”
I reached into my pocket and took out one of the copied pages.
Bell’s eyes moved to it.
“Nora Price,” I said. “She refused. You collected anyway.”
“An incomplete record.”
“I have the nursing notes.”
“You removed confidential medical information.”
“I copied evidence.”
For the first time, his expression hardened.
“Give it to me.”
“Release Tess.”
He waited.
Then he stepped to the doorway.
“Security.”
They took the page.
They took the camera.
I had expected that.
The memory card containing the first photographs was already upstairs, hidden inside Eli’s radio case.
They searched me, escorted me back to the residence, and placed a guard outside.
By noon, every public speaker in Mercy Ridge carried Bell’s voice.
“An incoming resident concealed exposure to infection and interfered with a critical medical program. Until the facts are established, please avoid speculation.”
He didn’t name me.
He didn’t have to.
People watched our windows.
June stopped asking when Tess would return.
Ben sat beside her on the floor.
Eli listened to the radio with one ear pressed to the speaker.
Then he raised his hand.
I went to him.
A dispatch operator was reading an arrival notice.
“Recovery Three inbound. Voss party. Four candidates.”
Graham.
Still delivering people.
Eli wrote the time.
I watched his pencil until I realized what Bell had given us.
A meeting.
People who would all be listening at once.
Lena came after dark.
The guard searched her medical bag and let her inside to examine Eli.
She closed the bedroom door.
“Bell is holding a resident briefing tomorrow,” she said.
“I heard.”
“He wants you there. He says you can explain yourself.”
“He wants me to admit I endangered everyone.”
“Yes.”
“Will Tess be there?”
“No.”
I looked at Eli.
He understood before I spoke.
“The hall uses the emergency broadcast circuit,” he said.
Lena stared at him.
He pointed to the radio.
“I’ve been listening to the maintenance calls. Their main amplifier drops out when they switch generators. There’s a backup input.”
I had repaired a junction beside that input the previous afternoon.
I knew the cabinet.
I knew the latch was broken.
“We need the records in a form people can hear,” I said.
Lena took a folded notebook from beneath her shirt.
“Original nursing entries. Names, dates, collections, refusals.”
“You took those?”
“I helped keep the system running.”
She laid the notebook on the bed.
“I’m going to say that in front of everyone.”
We worked through the night.
Eli recorded Lena reading the entries, then the intercepted dispatch naming Graham. I added only what I had witnessed myself.
No guesses.
No claim that everyone infected was already beyond help.

Just what Bell had done to people who had said no.
The next evening, guards brought me into the assembly hall.
Rows of residents filled the chairs.
Owen stood beside Bell on the platform.
His glasses were new.
Bell introduced him as living proof that treatment worked.
I looked toward the maintenance cabinet near the rear wall.
Its small green indicator was on.
Eli had reached the backup circuit.
Lena sat in the front row.
Bell gestured for me to step forward.
“Rowan has understandable fears,” he said. “But fear cannot be allowed to destroy the work keeping this community alive.”
I took the microphone.
“You brought Owen to prove your point?”
Owen watched me.
Something in his face tightened.
Bell nodded.
“Under supervision, he is stable and productive.”
“Then let people see what you’re supervising.”
The room went quiet.
“Take off your glasses, Owen.”
Bell reached for the microphone.
I stepped away.
“He handed food to your children yesterday,” I told the residents. “You deserve to know what precautions were taken.”
A woman stood halfway out of her chair.
“What does she mean?”
Owen looked at Bell.
Then at the woman.
Slowly, he removed his glasses.
His pupils stayed wide beneath the platform lights.
Someone gasped.
The recording began over the hall speakers.
Owen’s voice filled the room, stripped of its careful calm.
“Don’t open it. I can’t stop—”
A crash followed.
Then a nurse shouting for restraints.
Bell turned toward the rear of the hall.
“Cut the sound.”
Lena stood.
“That was recorded during his last missed dose. The residents were never told.”
Owen dropped his glasses.
His hand jerked toward his coat pocket.
Empty.
He looked at Bell with sudden terror.
“My dose.”
Bell backed away from him.
“Seal the hall.”
At the rear wall, the broadcast light stayed green.
