"The Maid’s Daughter Broke the Mafia Boss’s Most Feared Rule" Chapter 5 — The Ledger Under the Table
Isabella arrived at the Montenegro Foundation dinner carrying a duplicate key and wearing a wire beneath a borrowed black dress.
To every camera outside the Chicago Cultural Center, she looked alone.
Dante’s security team occupied the building as waiters, donors, and audiovisual technicians. Bruno monitored her from a catering van across Randolph Street. Dante remained out of sight because Ferraro expected Isabella to betray him.
That part was not entirely an act.
“You can still walk away,” Bruno said through her earpiece.
“Ferraro photographed my daughter inside a locked room.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Isabella entered the ballroom. “Then you know my answer.”
Marcello Ferraro stood beneath a marble arch surrounded by developers, aldermen, and foundation donors. His silver hair and midnight tuxedo made him look like a man trusted with hospitals and scholarships.
The garnet ring on his right hand said otherwise.
He smiled when he saw her.
“Mrs. Martin. You clean up beautifully.”
“You threaten children badly.”
His smile remained. “Where is the key?”
“Where is the bank information?”
“You have mistaken your position.”
“I’m a widow whose husband you underestimated. That is my position.”
Ferraro offered his arm as photographers turned toward them. “Walk with me unless you want your employer’s guests to hear us discuss your theft.”
He guided her past silent-auction tables toward a private gallery. On the way, Isabella saw Dante’s reflection in a dark window. He wore a black tuxedo and stood behind a column, watching Ferraro’s hand on her arm.
His expression made her grateful he had agreed to let the law move first.
In the gallery, Ferraro locked the door.
“Rafael should have taken the settlement,” he said.
“I took it.”
“Your husband did not. He planned to embarrass men who built this city.”
“He planned to keep workers alive.”
Ferraro held out his hand. “The key.”
Isabella placed the duplicate in his palm.
He examined it, then laughed. “Fresh-cut brass. Dante has become predictable.”
The gallery lights went out.
Ferraro grabbed her wrist. Isabella drove her heel into his shin and pulled free. When emergency lighting came on, he held a small pistol against his leg.
Dante entered through the side door.
“Drop it.”
Ferraro looked between them. “The maid and the prince. Your father would be humiliated.”
“My father is dead.”
“His habits are not.”
Bruno and two federal agents entered behind Dante. Ferraro opened his hand and let the gun fall.
“A licensed firearm,” he said. “I feared Mrs. Martin intended to rob me.”
He had anticipated the recording. Every sentence could be explained as business conflict.
“Search him,” Dante said.
The agents found no bank documents and no photograph of Sophie. Without a warrant tied to a specific crime, they could not arrest him.
Ferraro adjusted his cuff. “Now, if you are finished staging theater, your board is waiting.”
Before returning to the ballroom, he leaned close enough that only Isabella’s wire could hear him.

“Dante believes protecting you makes him different from his father. It makes him easier to control.”
“You do not know him as well as you think.”
“I raised him after Luca died. I taught him which judges answer calls, which unions require favors, and which reporters can be purchased. You have known him for four days.”
“And I already know he did not threaten a three-year-old.”
The smile left Ferraro’s face.
For the first time, Isabella understood that he did not merely want the company. He believed he had built Dante’s power and deserved to inherit it.
The ballroom screens lit before anyone returned.
Security footage appeared showing Isabella entering a Montenegro office after midnight and carrying a banker’s box. The date stamp came from two nights earlier, when she had been inside the estate with Sophie.
A second clip showed Dante giving her an envelope.
The images were false, but convincing.
The forged footage used Isabella’s real employee badge and Dante’s actual office. It even showed the small limp she developed after twelve-hour housekeeping shifts. Someone had studied staff-camera archives closely enough to reproduce her body language.
Bruno’s voice came through her earpiece. “The file is streaming from a server inside the building. We are tracing it.”
Isabella looked toward the audiovisual booth and saw a technician remove his headset and run.
She chased him through the crowd. The man reached a service stairwell, but Isabella caught the back of his jacket. He shoved her against the rail.
Dante appeared and drove him to the floor without throwing a punch. Bruno’s agents recovered a laptop containing source footage copied from the estate.
The files proved the video was fabricated—but also proved Ferraro had an active source inside Dante’s home.
Ferraro walked onto the stage.
“It is my painful duty to report that an employee exploited a private relationship with our CEO to steal protected financial records.”
Every face turned toward Isabella.
Reporters raised phones.
Dante took her hand and led her into the ballroom instead of hiding her.
“The footage is fabricated,” he announced.
Ferraro looked almost delighted. “Then submit it to an independent examiner. Until that happens, the board must suspend you.”
Three directors stood and demanded an emergency vote.
Ricardo appeared near the stage under Bruno’s protection. “The bylaws require forty-eight hours’ notice.”
“Unless company assets are at immediate risk,” Ferraro replied.
He had built the scandal to take control before Box 614 could be opened.
Sophie’s drawing flashed in Isabella’s mind.
CHECK THE CHAIR.
The foundation dinner used the Montenegro estate’s historic dining table and twelve carved chairs as part of an exhibit on the family’s history. Dante had objected, but Ferraro personally approved the display.
The forbidden chair stood beneath glass at the edge of the ballroom.
“The chair,” Isabella whispered.
Dante understood immediately.
They crossed the ballroom while Ferraro continued accusing them. Bruno lifted the display cover.

Dante turned the chair over.
Four guards had searched it that afternoon. None had removed the old felt beneath the seat.
Isabella found a seam and pulled.
A thin leather ledger fell onto the carpet.
The ballroom went silent.
Ferraro stopped speaking.
Dante opened the book. Luca’s handwriting filled the first pages. Rafael’s appeared later, continuing the account numbers, dates, fake vendors, and construction sites.
On the final page, Rafael had written:
DANTE’S SIGNATURE IS BEING FORGED. FERRARO IS MOVING MONEY THROUGH THE SAFETY ORDERS.
Isabella looked at Dante. For three years, she had wondered whether he ordered the cover-up. Rafael had answered her.
Dante had not signed the fatal work orders.
Ferraro lunged for the ledger.
Bruno restrained him, but Ferraro’s attorney shouted that the book was unauthenticated and illegally seized. The federal agents photographed every page while the board members watched.
One page listed Box 614 and a hospital invoice dated six hours after Rafael’s reported death.
Isabella’s hands began to shake.
“Why would there be a hospital invoice after the morgue received him?”
Marcus, listening from the estate, called Bruno’s secure line.
His voice came through the ballroom speakers.
“Because the fall did not kill Rafael.”
Isabella stopped breathing.
Marcus continued.
“An ambulance took him from Langley Tower alive. He reached St. Catherine Medical Center at 10:06 a.m.”
Ferraro tore free long enough to seize a microphone.
“That man is delirious.”
Dante faced him. “Then why did your private company pay the hospital?”
Bruno turned to the final ledger page.
Below the invoice number, Rafael had written one last line in uneven ink.
IF I DIE TONIGHT, THE MAN IN THE WHITE COAT WORKS FOR FERRARO.
Isabella stared at her husband’s handwriting.
Rafael had survived the fall.
Someone had killed him inside the hospital.
Across the ballroom, Ferraro met Isabella’s eyes as agents escorted him away for questioning.
He touched two fingers to his garnet ring, then pointed toward the ceiling cameras.
Her phone vibrated.
A photograph showed Sophie in the estate safe room only seconds earlier.
The message read:
THE HOSPITAL WAS THREE YEARS AGO. YOUR DAUGHTER IS NOW.
