"The Maid’s Daughter Broke the Mafia Boss’s Most Feared Rule" Chapter 3 — The Price of Protection
Ricardo did not deny the video.
He sat across from Dante in the locked library while rain struck the windows and the frozen image of his payment remained on the laptop.
“I gave the inspector seventy-five thousand dollars,” he said.
Isabella moved toward him. Bruno stepped between them before she could decide what to do with her hands.
“My husband died,” she said. “You paid the man who called it an accident.”
“I paid him to keep Langley Tower open.”
“That is not better.”
Ricardo looked at Dante. “Marcello said closing the project would expose accounts your father created. He said federal scrutiny would bring down the legitimate company with everything else.”
“So you protected the company,” Dante said.
“I protected twelve hundred jobs.”
“Do not hide behind payroll.”
Ricardo’s control cracked. “Ferraro had photographs of my daughter leaving school. He knew her route, her soccer schedule, the name of her best friend. I made the payment.”
The room went silent.
Dante asked, “Why didn’t you come to me?”
“Because Marcello said the order came from you.”
Isabella laughed once without humor. “Convenient.”
Ricardo pulled out his phone and opened a photograph. A teenage girl walked beside a high-school soccer field, unaware that the image had been taken from across the street. On the back of her backpack hung a red ribbon.
“My daughter was fourteen,” he said. “You can hate what I did. I already do.”
Dante ordered Bruno to place Ricardo under guard in the east guest suite, with access to an attorney but no outside communication.
“You believe me?” Ricardo asked.
“I believe you paid the inspector. The rest you will prove.”
Ricardo stopped at the doorway. “There were three inspectors, not one. The other two are dead.”
Dante’s gaze sharpened.
“One drowned in Wisconsin six months after Langley. The other died in a car fire last year. I kept telling myself coincidence was possible.”
“You knew men were dying and stayed silent?” Isabella demanded.
“I knew men connected to Marcello died. I did not know why until I saw Rafael’s name on an internal payment list.”
“When?”
“Last week.”
“The same week Marcello searched my apartment.”
Ricardo nodded.
Someone inside Montenegro Development had alerted Ferraro the moment Ricardo reopened Rafael’s file.
After he was removed, Isabella turned on Dante.
“You treat family like suspects.”
“Tonight, everyone is a suspect.”
“Including me?”
His gaze dropped to the receipt in his hand. “Especially you.”
The honesty stung more than an accusation.
Dante moved Isabella and Sophie from the staff wing into two connected rooms on the secured family floor. Isabella objected until Bruno showed her footage of a masked intruder cutting the western security line.
Bruno also gave her a new phone, a panic button, and written authorization to leave with Sophie whenever she chose. Dante signed the last page in front of her.
“If the gates are locked?” she asked.

“This code opens the south pedestrian exit and alerts state police, not my security office,” Bruno said.
Isabella looked at Dante. “You approved a way for me to escape you?”
“Protection only counts if you can refuse it.”
That answer cost him some of the fear he had used as armor. She suspected he knew it.
“This is not permanent,” she said.
“Nothing in my house appears to be,” Dante replied.
Sophie entered the bedroom and stared at the carved canopy bed. “Is this a princess room?”
“It is a guest room,” Dante said.
“Can I be a guest princess?”
“For tonight.”
“Tomorrow too?”
Isabella answered first. “We’ll see.”
Dante looked as if he recognized the phrase as parental diplomacy.
Mrs. Keating brought pajamas, toothbrushes, and a stuffed dog from the staff apartment. Sophie rejected the dog because one ear was “too serious” and asked for a bedtime story instead.
Isabella found Dante still standing at the door.
“You can go,” she told him.
Sophie pointed at the book. “He has to do the bear voice.”
“He doesn’t know the bear voice.”
“He can learn.”
Dante Montenegro, feared in union halls and private clubs across Chicago, sat at the foot of the bed and read a picture book about a bear refusing to sleep.
His first attempt sounded like a prosecutor with a cold.
Sophie frowned. “Bears are fuzzier.”
He tried again.
Isabella covered a smile with her hand.
By the final page, Sophie had fallen asleep against Dante’s arm. He remained still, looking down at her curls.
“You can move,” Isabella whispered.
“She’ll wake.”
“She sleeps through garbage trucks.”
He carefully lifted Sophie and placed her beneath the blanket.
“You’re good with her,” Isabella said before she could stop herself.
“Children are honest about what they want.”
“Adults learn honesty is expensive.”
“Is that why you hid Rafael’s evidence?”
The softness vanished.
Isabella stepped into the adjoining sitting room and closed the bedroom door.
“Rafael called me from Langley Tower the morning he died. He said the records were bigger than unsafe concrete or bribed inspectors. He told me to find Marcus if he did not come home.”
“Did you?”
“Marcus disappeared. I had a newborn, funeral bills, and a settlement agreement that threatened to take everything if I spoke publicly.”
“You signed?”
“The company’s attorney put a check for two hundred thousand dollars beside a photograph of Sophie in the neonatal unit.”
Dante’s face hardened. “Who was the attorney?”
“I never got his name.”
“Describe him.”
“Mid-fifties. Gray hair. Expensive watch. A red stone ring.”
“Ferraro.”
“I know that now.”
Dante looked toward the sleeping child. “The settlement came from my company. I should have known.”
“Powerful men always say that after the funeral.”
He accepted the blow.
“What would you have done?” Isabella asked. “If you had known?”
“Found the person responsible.”
“And killed him?”
“Would the answer change whether you trust me?”
“Yes.”
He met her eyes. “Three years ago, it would have been yes.”
“And now?”
“Now I want evidence strong enough that every person he bought watches him sentenced in open court.”
She had expected menace. The answer was more dangerous because she wanted to believe it.
The next morning, Bruno brought breakfast into the family room. Sophie climbed onto Dante’s lap without asking and fed him one blueberry from her pancake.
He ate it with grave acceptance.
Ricardo arrived under guard carrying a banker’s box.
“Proof,” he said.
Inside were copies of threatening emails, payment instructions, and a photograph of Marcello Ferraro entering a warehouse owned by one of the shell companies.
The warehouse address matched a phone number on Isabella’s receipt.
“Why keep these?” Bruno asked.
“Because cowards survive by preparing for the day courage becomes necessary.”
Dante opened a red folder containing corporate photographs from past board events. Sophie leaned over the table.
“That man.”
She pointed to Ferraro.
“Red ring,” she said.
Then she pointed to another photograph tucked behind it.
The image was twelve years old. Dante stood beside a younger man who looked enough like him to be a brother. Between them was Ferraro, wearing the same garnet ring.
Across the bottom, someone had written:
LUCA FOUND THE SECOND BOOK.
Dante stared at the handwriting.
“That is my brother’s,” he said.
Sophie tapped the young man beside him.
“He was in the hallway last night.”
Dante stopped breathing.
Luca Montenegro had been dead for twelve years.
