"The Little Girl Who Knocked at Midnight" Chapter 9: The Person Who Let It Burn
Chapter 9: The Person Who Let It Burn
Vega found the security contractor’s records the next morning. Caleb had supervised access at Pier Nine during the month before the fire. His team controlled the warehouse gates and maintained a list of people issued temporary passes.
Evan’s name was on the employee list. On the night he died, a second pass had been used at the side entrance six minutes before his voicemail to Nora.
It belonged to Caleb.
“He could say someone took it,” I told Vega.
“He does,” she said. “We’re checking the footage from a neighboring loading yard. It was kept as part of the insurance file.”
Nora sat beside me in the interview room. She had brought Evan’s notebook and a written timeline. She was no longer waiting for people to tell her what they thought mattered.
“Ask him why the alarm was overridden before Evan went inside,” she said.
“We will.”
“And ask who warned the warehouse manager about Ames’s visit.”
Vega wrote it down.
Caleb had been questioned and released the previous evening while investigators verified the records. The assault against Nora was being pursued separately. Now the old fire put him in a different position, but he remained free until the investigators had enough to hold him.
Gideon’s lawyers sent Helen a letter accusing me of using Nora to shift blame for my own transactions. A second letter went to Nora, warning that public discussion of Tessa’s files could expose her to a lawsuit.
She tore open the envelope in Vega’s office, read it, and handed it over.
“He still thinks a letter will make me quiet,” she said.
By noon, Tessa Rowan had been found. She was alive, staying with a cousin in Wisconsin. She had turned off her phone after noticing the same car outside her apartment twice. Vega spoke with her by video before telling us.
“She’ll come in,” Vega said. “She has the page she promised Nora.”
“What is it?” Nora asked.
“A routing sheet. It ties the alarm-service payment to the contractor’s account.”
“Does it name Caleb?”
“Yes. It also names the person who authorized the payment.”
Gideon. I saw it in Vega’s face before she said it.
For a moment, the case looked almost simple. Caleb controlled access. Gideon paid him. Evan discovered the disabled alarms and was dead before he could show Ames.
Then Vega laid the routing sheet beside my ledger.
The payment had passed through a Vescari company account before reaching the contractor. An employee in my office had signed the release. Gideon had directed it, but I had created the system that let him use my name.
“I’ll testify to that,” I said.
Vega looked at me. “You’ll have to explain why you didn’t stop him.”
“I’ll explain what I did and what I failed to do.”
Nora turned toward me. She had heard me admit fault before, but not with an investigator taking notes.

Late that afternoon, Peter called. Maisie had asked when she could go home. Grace’s dog had recovered from the crayon. Nora listened to her daughter describe a drawing, then promised to see her before dinner.
As we left the office, Nora said, “I told her we might have to find a new place to live.”
“You can stay at the estate once Caleb is caught.”
“No.” She stopped walking. “I won’t raise her in a house where every door reminds her of that night.”
“I understand.”
“I don’t think you do. I liked parts of being there. Maisie liked you. That makes it harder.”
She turned away before I could answer. My phone rang. It was Helen, asking me to return to the company office to identify an old authorization form.
Nora and I went together. Helen had warned the interim manager to preserve everything in Gideon’s files. One of the retrieved documents was a copy of the warehouse access request bearing Evan’s signature. It authorized an after-hours delivery on the night of the fire.
Nora read it once and shook her head.
“He didn’t arrange deliveries.”
“It could be forged,” Helen said.
“He wrote dates with the day before the month. Even on company forms.” Nora pointed to the signature line. “This date is written the other way.”
Helen photographed the page. “The original may show whether it was altered.”
Nora’s phone rang. The number was withheld.
She answered while I was standing close enough to hear.
“Did you see the paper?” Caleb asked.
Her face hardened. “You used my brother’s name.”
“Gideon has copies. He’ll say Evan let the delivery in. People already believed he ignored an evacuation order.”
Vega had told Nora to keep suspicious callers talking if she could do so safely. She tapped the recording control and placed the phone on speaker.
“What do you want?” she asked.
“Stop giving statements. Tell the detective you made assumptions about the files.”
“And then?”
“Your daughter can go back to being a little girl.”
I reached for my own phone to call Vega. Nora raised one hand to stop me from speaking.
“Where were you when Evan died?” she asked.
Caleb was quiet long enough for us to hear traffic behind him.
“You don’t want the answer,” he said.
“I’ve wanted it for six years.”
“Then ask Roman who signed the order that let us into the building.”
He ended the call.
Helen immediately sent the recording to Vega. Nora stood very still, staring at the access request.
“He wants me to look at you,” she said to me. “So I stop looking at him.”
“Will you?”
“I’m going to look at all of you.”
She took out Evan’s notebook. On the last page, beneath a list of damaged fire doors, he had written the number of the access request. She compared it with the form in Helen’s hand.
“The numbers match,” she said. “He knew this document existed.”
Beside the number, Evan had added four words Nora had overlooked:
Check who received copy.
She called Vega and told her she would testify at the hearing being arranged for the next morning. She would bring the notebook herself.
Caleb had tried to make Evan’s signature end the case. Nora intended to make it the first question Gideon would have to answer in public.
