"The Proposal He Refused Was Hiding a Truth Neither of Them Expected" Chapter 3 — The Room That Wasn’t There
Chapter 3 — The Room That Wasn’t There
By nine the next morning, I had called the bank that issued the deposit and learned that records from that period were no longer available through ordinary customer service. My mother had found no matching withdrawal on Dad’s later statements.
That did not mean he had kept the money. It meant we needed to know where it went.
I photographed the statement, placed the original in a protective sleeve, and met Adrian outside Mrs. Ortega’s shop.
He arrived alone in a dark coat, carrying two paper coffees. He held one out, then stopped.
“I didn’t know how you take it.”
“Black,” I said.
“So do I.”
I took the cup. “That’s the first easy thing you’ve said to me this week.”
He did not smile. He had spent the morning looking into Harbor Crescent.
“It bought four properties near the warehouse,” he said as we walked. “Two have since been resold. Its ownership is hidden behind another company.”
“Could Victor be behind it?”
“He could. I don’t have proof.”
Mrs. Ortega watched us approach through her shop window. She came outside before Adrian could introduce himself.
“You look like your mother,” she told him.
He blinked. “You knew her?”
“She promised my husband a shop window wide enough to fit the bench he worked at.” Mrs. Ortega glanced at me. “June told you about the buyers?”
“She did.”
“Then listen to her. Your mother did.”
Adrian accepted that without trying to charm her. He asked whether she would speak at a public meeting if there was one. Mrs. Ortega said she would bring three neighbors.
Inside the shop, I spread my proposal on the counter and showed her the space I had marked for small businesses. She pointed out that my suggested delivery hours would conflict with the school buses on the street. I changed them in pen.
Adrian watched. He had read my seventy-four slides. Mrs. Ortega had improved one in less than five minutes.
Afterward, Adrian drove us to the warehouse.
It stood at the end of a row of closed factories, brick walls streaked from years of rain. Beyond it, the river moved between concrete banks. The doors were locked, but Adrian had arranged access with the property caretaker.
Before going in, I stopped beside a row of shallow holes in the mortar. My father used to mark inspection routes that way: three small dots beside a number, discreet enough not to be mistaken for damage.
“There,” I said.
Adrian bent closer. “What is it?”
“Dad’s marking system.”
“You’re sure?”
“He taught me to make it when I was eight. He thought I should know how to find my way through a building.”
Inside, the caretaker left us with hard hats and a warning to keep away from the western stairs. We walked through the old loading floor. Sunlight entered through high windows, falling across faded lines where machinery had once stood.

I found two more of Dad’s marks. Both matched routes on his drawings. The third appeared on a wall the plans identified as solid brick.
Beside it was a narrow outline under layers of paint.
“A door,” I said.
Adrian tested the edge with his fingertips. “It’s been sealed.”
We went back to the table where the caretaker had laid out current plans. I compared them with my father’s original drawings. The marked wall sat west of the freight shaft.
On Dad’s plan, a short corridor continued beyond it.
On the current plan, the corridor ended at the wall.
“Why remove a room from the drawings?” Adrian asked.
“Maybe it was filled in during repairs. Maybe it was missed in the survey.”
“You don’t believe either of those.”
“I want someone qualified to check before we decide.”
The caretaker gave us the name of the company that had completed the most recent survey. I called from the loading floor. The office could send its archived notes if the owner authorized the release.
Adrian did so by email.
While we waited, I called Leah at Vale Group. She had found a list of the old warehouse files. One entry described a storage space below the western loading floor. It had no attached floor plan.
Adrian stood close enough to hear the rest of the call. When Leah said Victor had requested that entry along with the suspension form, he took a step away and looked toward the sealed wall.
“Tell her what you know,” I said.
He glanced at me. Then he told Leah about the missing corridor and asked her to preserve the access logs.
It was a small thing. Yesterday he might have held the detail until he understood it himself.
We left the warehouse before the caretaker’s shift ended. On the sidewalk, Adrian offered to have his building team open the wall first thing in the morning.
“No,” I said. “We document what’s here before anyone touches it.”
“Victor could get there first.”
“Then we ask the caretaker to secure the building and log every visitor. We need a surveyor who has no reason to tell either of us what we want to hear.”
Adrian considered it. “I know an independent engineer.”
“I’ll choose one too. They can work together.”
“All right.”
He took out his phone and called the caretaker back. I contacted the engineer Mrs. Ortega had recommended, a woman who had worked on several old waterfront buildings and had no connection to Vale Group. She could come at eight the next morning.
By then the archived survey notes arrived.
There were only four pages. On the last, a surveyor had written that the western storage area was inaccessible and had been excluded from the measured plan. Someone had added a handwritten instruction beneath it:
Do not reopen without owner approval.
The instruction carried no name or date.
Adrian requested the earlier version of the survey. I forwarded copies of both plans and the note to my engineer, then emailed them to myself as well.
“What do you think is back there?” he asked.
“Maybe nothing useful.”
“But your father marked the wall.”
“Yes.”
We stood beside his car with the warehouse behind us. For the first time since I had kissed his photograph, Adrian looked less concerned with what I thought of him than with what I might find.
“I need to tell you something,” he said.
I waited.
“Victor offered to buy my share of the property last month.”
“And?”
“I said no.”
“Why?”
“I wasn’t ready to sell something my mother kept for so long.”
“That’s different from wanting to build what she planned.”
“I know.”
He looked across the street at the closed shops. “I’m beginning to understand the difference.”
My phone buzzed. The engineer had received the documents. She sent back one question:
Does the original plan show a lower entrance beneath the sealed corridor?
I enlarged my father’s drawing. A fine pencil line ran down from the corridor, ending in a square I had assumed was an old utility shaft.
Under the square, in his tiny handwriting, was a room number that appeared nowhere on the current plans.
I turned the screen toward Adrian.
At eight tomorrow morning, we would find out whether that room still existed.
