"The Woman Who Made the Devil Laugh" Chapter 1 — The Rug Can Wait
Chapter 1 — The Rug Can Wait
The man on his knees was crying. The man holding the gun looked bored.
I stepped between them with a folder under my arm.
“Before you shoot him,” I said, “I need your signature.”
Both guards turned toward me. Salvatore Verri made a sound that might have been my name. Luca Moretti looked at me as though I had walked into the wrong room.
I hadn’t. His office was exactly where it had been for the eleven months I’d worked there.
“Nora,” he said. “Leave.”
“At three, the port authority gets our revised insurance certificate. Without your signature, the terminal holds six vessels tomorrow morning.”
“I am occupied.”
“I can see that.”
Rain ran down the windows behind him. On a clear day, the forty-first floor gave Luca a view of Philadelphia’s riverfront. Today, the city looked as if someone had rubbed it out.
Sal knelt on the cream rug with his hands tied behind his back. His tie had come loose. A swollen mark darkened his cheek. Luca held a pistol low at his side.
I opened the folder.
“Initial page four. Sign page six.”
Sal stared at me. “Nora, please.”
“Don’t,” I told him.
“I didn’t take all of it.”
That got Luca’s attention. His eyes left my face and settled on Sal.
For six weeks, I had been trying to reconcile a set of transfers Sal called temporary operating adjustments. That morning, I found their destination: an account controlled by a company registered to his sister-in-law.
Two million, eight hundred thousand dollars.
I set the certificate on Luca’s desk.
“Now you’ve made me correct my spreadsheet,” I told Sal. “I had you down for the full amount.”
“You traced it?” Luca asked.
“His sister-in-law used the family address on the registration.”
Sal lowered his head.
Luca had a way of going still that made everyone else move less. One of the guards shifted his weight. I heard the soft scrape of a shoe against the rug.
The rug was new.
That was when I looked down at it, then back at the gun.
“If you’re going to shoot him, could you do it somewhere else?”
Luca’s expression did not change. “What?”
“The rug. Facilities finally replaced it on Monday.”
“Nora.”
“The last cleaning invoice required three calls and a meeting. Sal isn’t worth another meeting.”
For a moment, rain against glass was the only sound in the room.
Then Luca laughed.
It came out harsh and startled, as if he hadn’t meant to make any sound at all. He looked down, pressed the back of his hand against his mouth, and laughed again.
The guards stared at him.
I had heard people say he hadn’t laughed since his wife died nine years ago. I had assumed they were exaggerating. Standing in that office, I began to think they weren’t.
Luca set the pistol on the desk, well clear of my folder.

“The rug,” he said.
“Yes.”
He picked up my pen. “You chose an extraordinary time to defend it.”
“You chose an inconvenient time to threaten Sal.”
He signed page six. I checked the signature before closing the folder.
“Marco,” Luca said to the guard nearest the door. “Take Sal downstairs. Keep him there until counsel arrives. I want every account he touched locked for review.”
Sal looked up. “You’re not—”
“I haven’t decided what happens to you,” Luca said. “Stop helping me decide.”
Marco took Sal by the arm. The other guard followed them out.
I started after them, but Luca called my name.
When I turned, he was looking at the pen in his hand. The laughter had gone. His gaze lifted to mine, and for one uncomfortable second I saw how tired he was.
“You should have knocked.”
“You don’t answer when I knock.”
“That has never stopped you before.”
“No,” I said. “It hasn’t.”
I took the signed certificate and left.
At my desk, I sent it to the insurer and called our terminal contact to confirm receipt. Then I opened the transfer ledger again.
Sal’s account was real. So was the theft. But the route he had used bothered me. The transactions passed through an old company code that should have been retired years ago. I had flagged it twice and received the same answer both times: legacy system, leave it alone.
My phone rang.
“Owen Bennett,” my brother announced when I answered.
“Hello, Owen Bennett.”
“The washing machine is fixed.”
“That’s good.”
“They replaced a part that didn’t need replacing first. I told them.”
“I’m sure you did.”
He paused. In the background, I heard voices from the common room at his residence.
“You sound strange,” he said.
“Long morning.”
“Are you coming Sunday?”
“Two o’clock. I’ll bring the train magazine.”
“The October issue?”
“The October issue.”
“Okay.”
He ended the call without saying goodbye. Owen had never seen the point of announcing a conversation was over after it was already over.
I sat with the phone in my hand.
His residence cost more each month than my first job had paid me. He liked the staff there, and they knew how to help him when the world became too loud or confusing. The arrangement worked. Keeping it paid for was my responsibility.
Which was why, when Luca’s office had turned violent, I had still needed that signature.
An hour later, an unmarked envelope appeared in my internal mail tray.
Inside was a single copied payment record from nine years earlier. It showed eight thousand dollars sent by a housing trust to a university hardship fund.
The named recipient was
Nora Bennett
.
I read it twice. During my last year of college, an anonymous grant had covered several months of Owen’s treatment. I remembered crying when the university called. I had never learned who paid.
At the top of the record was a name I recognized from the framed photograph Luca kept in his office.
Elise Moretti.
At the bottom, someone had written one sentence by hand:
Ask him why he hired you.
