"The Night My Mother Burned My Restaurant" Chapter 11 — A Table of My Own
Chapter 11 — A Table of My Own
The investigation did not end when Marianne gave her statement.
Over the following weeks, Ortiz spoke with Natalie again, examined the recovered messages, and compared the camera footage with the alarm records and the fire scene. Evan changed his account more than once. First he had been home. Then he had gone to rescue Marianne. Later, he admitted taking the spare key from my office safe but insisted he had only meant to make sure she could get out.
Marianne continued to say the fire had been her idea. She also confirmed that Evan had helped her plan when to enter the restaurant.
Eventually, prosecutors charged them both in connection with the fire. Marianne accepted responsibility for what she had done. Evan contested the allegations against him. I went to the hearings I needed to attend and stayed away from the ones I didn’t.
The process took months. It gave me no single moment when I could point to a courtroom door and say my life had been returned.
Luis’s throat recovered. The employees received the pay they were owed, and several found other restaurant jobs before I could offer them one. Our insurance claim moved slowly because the cause of the fire was disputed. Priya and a separate attorney helped me answer requests for records and document every expense. The eventual payment covered part of the loss. It did not cover the hours Rosa and I had spent building a place people wanted to return to.
The Alder Street house stayed in my name.
The document bearing my false signature never became a completed sale. Danner pursued recovery of his deposit from the people and company that received it. Cross Street Coffee closed after its suppliers stopped extending credit. When Danner finally called to tell me he had recovered a substantial portion of his money, he sounded too tired to celebrate.
“I’m glad,” I said.
“So am I.” He paused. “I should have asked to meet you before I paid.”
“You were given a convincing story.”
“We both were.”
I thought about that after the call.
I had spent years believing Marianne’s account of our family. She had believed Thomas Cross’s account of hers. But she had also held my restaurant key, walked into my kitchen, and struck the match. Learning who lied to her did not undo what she chose to do to me.
We spoke once more, with Priya present.
Marianne asked to meet at Alder Street. I chose a quiet room at Priya’s office instead.
She looked older than she had in the coffee shop. She brought no papers, only a photograph of my father standing on the crooked back steps.
“I found this in a drawer,” she said. “It belongs to you.”
I took it. It was a different photograph from the one I kept at home. Peter was holding a paint can in one hand and laughing at whoever stood behind the camera.

Marianne watched my face. “He paid my family’s debt.”
“Yes.”
“He tried to tell me. I wouldn’t read what he brought home.”
I set the photograph on the table.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
I had wanted those words when I was eleven and she gave Evan my room. I had wanted them in the hospital after Dad died. I had wanted them outside the ruins of the restaurant.
Now that she had said them, I could hear they were sincere. They still couldn’t do the work she hoped they would.
“I believe you regret it,” I said.
“Can we ever talk again?”
“Maybe someday. I need you to stop asking me to decide that now.”
She nodded. For once, she let an answer stand without trying to improve it.
Natalie and I ended our engagement. There was no public announcement. I returned her remaining things, and she returned the ring box she had taken from my desk before the fire. The ring itself was recovered from the office debris weeks later, damaged but intact.
We arranged through our attorneys to establish the baby’s parentage when the time came. I told her plainly that I would meet my responsibilities if the child was mine. I would not resume our relationship.
She accepted that. We spoke only when there was something we actually needed to discuss.
Claire visited the borrowed kitchen one Tuesday evening and watched Rosa and me argue over whether the crab cakes needed more lemon.
“You used to do this in my apartment,” Claire said. “Except you were cooking on a stove that leaned to the left.”
“That stove had character.”
“That stove had a gas leak.”
After service, she handed me a copy of the agreement we had signed when I helped fund her first warehouse deposit. I remembered the signature. I had forgotten how firmly she had insisted that the money buy me a small stake in her company.
“I’ve been sending the annual statements to your old email,” she said. “You never cashed the distributions.”
“I thought those were updates about how the company was doing.”
“They were. Read the numbers this time.”
The accumulated amount was more than enough to clear what remained of my immediate personal debt and give a new restaurant a careful start. It was not enough to erase the fire or let me stop thinking about money. I was relieved by that, in a strange way. I knew what to do with a chance. I had no idea what I would have done with a miracle.
Claire helped me review the figures, but she didn’t make the decision for me.
I paid back the short-term payroll loan first.
Then Rosa and I found a smaller storefront six blocks from the old one. It had good light, a sound kitchen, and room for twelve tables. We spent weeks working through costs before signing the lease.
Some of the original staff came back. Others had found jobs they liked and stayed there. Luis returned for opening week, though he warned me he intended to keep the better-paying position he had found afterward.
“Fair,” I told him.
The night before we opened, Rosa stood beside me in the empty dining room. There were no blue ribbons on the chairs this time.
“Are you nervous?” she asked.
“Terrified.”
“Good. I’d be worried if you weren’t.”
She went to check the kitchen. I stayed by the front window and watched the streetlights come on.
My father’s photograph hung near the host stand. Not because I wanted every customer to know what had happened, but because he had taught me how to welcome people into a room. He had opened a house to someone who needed one. I could honor that part of him without repeating every choice he made.
At noon the next day, we unlocked the door.
Mrs. Callahan came in first. Danner arrived later and paid for lunch without mentioning the house. Claire brought two colleagues. Natalie did not come. Neither did Marianne.
By one o’clock, all twelve tables were full.
Rosa called an order into the kitchen. Luis answered. Someone laughed near the window. I stepped behind the line and reached for a clean pan.
The last time I had heard a room this busy, I thought it meant my life was finally safe. I knew better now.
I lit the burner anyway.
